I know the "not everything is a sign" thing is brought up and passed around Witchblr as a reminder semi frequently but... Not everything is a sign you guys.
Tonight I couldn't sleep because a pair of owls were having a very loud chatter, one being off in the woods somewhere and one in my front garden, right outside my bedroom window.
Of course, I go into a little diving pool of owl behaviour because while I've heard them here before it's never been this close and I don't know much about owls in London.
Immediately - "Hearing two owls means that you're receiving an important spiritual message uwu".
Or, how about this- the most common species of owl in this city is the Tawny Owl. A species that stays in pairs all year round and roosts in woodland and parks. I happen to live next to some urban woodland (now there's an oxymoron).
In different circumstances hearing an owl, or a pair of owls could be a sign. I'm sure if I saw or heard an uncommon owl in broad daylight, I'd take a moment to consider symbolism and connotations. But the most common owl species for my city, vibing in an area that fits their typical roosting grounds to a T, at two am?
Regular animals doing regular animal things don't necessarily mean something is calling out to you. Not everything is a sign and true signs are rarely that subtle.
Friendly reminder to all as a few major pagan holidays are coming up very soon:
You don’t have to drink/offer alcohol to participate/celebrate.
I personally recommend tea as an alternative if you need to make any ritualistic toasts—but it certainly doesn’t have to be any of mine! Pick something that’s comfortable, accessible, and feels right for you.
🍂 🍵 🌾 ☕️ ✨
Just some ideas for the wheel of the year:
Imbolc: - (warm) milk with honey, especially sheepmilk - jasmine or white tea - light fruit juices - slemp (a Dutch spiced milk)
Ostara: - infused water - fruit juices
Beltaine: - rose tea or -lemonade - infused water with strawberry - grape juice - cherry juice or tea - milk
Litha: - iced tea, especially lemon or ginger - infused water with orange, or with cucumber and watermelon, or with strawberries - fruit juices like orange, mango, tropical blend - strawberry tea (here we call strawberries “summer kings”)
Lughnasadh: - oatmilk - apple juice or cider - grape juice
Mabon: - applejuice or pearjuice - nutmilks, like almond- or cashewmilk - pomegranate juice or tea - apple cinnamon tea
Samhain: - apple juice or cider - pumpkin spice latte - pumpkin juice - grape juice - cinnamon tea - nutmilks, like almond- or cashewmilk
Yule: - teas: cinnamon, vanilla, apple, caramel, winter blends, mint - hot chocolate - orange juice (the sun returning) - cranberry juice - wassail - spiced apple cider (as in, the non-alcoholic cider, of course)
General ideas: - grapejuice, in our supermarket they also have merlot grapejuice for example - elderflower lemonade or tonic - seasonal tea blends
If you have ideas, add them!
Bringing this back, for ‘tis the season!
For Yule, here is a very simple non alcoholic variation of glögi.
- 1 liter (4 and ¼ cups) of lingonberry juice (can be substituted for cranberry) for a darker glögi, or apple juice for a lighter variety
- 1 stick of cinnamon
- 3 whole fruits of star anise
- 5 cloves
Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil, then immediately remove from heat and cover the pot with a lid. Let the glögi sit anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour, then boil again. Remove the spices and pour into container of your choice.
magic with matchsticks
a small discussion about matchsticks in my witchcraft/magic discord server inspired me to make this post, and note the different ways you can use matchsticks in magic/witchcraft!
used (or new) matches can be used in divination, similar to bonethrowing
used (or new) matches can be used to determine if you're cursed by throwing 2 matchsticks into a cup or bowl of water
use match remnants/ashes to make black salt
use matches to represent fire in deity workings, spells, elemental magic, on your altar, etc
matches can be used to speed up spells/spellwork by "lighting a fire under" someone/something
use matches for simple intention spells
light a match and use its smoke for cleansing or banishing
another great masterpost for matchstick magic
Magical Uses for Matches
added resource
initiate a ritual with a match instead of a lighter
seal a spell with the extinguishing of the flame
light one and let it burn until you can’t hold it anymore for an energy cleansing (can hold with tweezers or prop in an incense holder)
develop a good rule of thumb for how long you should burn a match for when you’re holding it (how many seconds until to have to put it out)
create a key of omens for your burnt match sticks
create a key of correspondences for holding your match vertical or horizontal / in your left hand or right hand / north, south east, west / etc.
grind up the burnt match as a spell ingredient
save the wooden base separately for wood splinters as a spell ingredient
color-code your matches and strike them as a substitute for lighting a colored candle
charge your matchbox with crystals, plants, herbs, overnight, in sunlight, etc.
whisper your wish or intent into the flame then promptly blow it out
hold it over an object and circle it counterclockwise to cleanse it
hold it over an object and circle it clockwise to enchant it
light a match with a lighter with the intent to cancel a spell
throw the burnt match into a bowl of water and let it sit in the moonlight to give your moonwater added protective properties
draw a sigil with a used match tip
write someone’s name and cross it out with a used match tip to hex them
write someone’s name and circle it with a used match tip to protect them
pour your negative energy into your fingertips, and into the match as you strike it, then toss the stick out to forcibly remove negative energy
light a match to produce productive or powerful energy
hold a lit match up to a mirror to banish unwanted entities
light a match in the middle of your garden right at sunrise or after sunset and bury the used stick for a bountiful harvest season
rub your thumb slowly across the strike pad 3 times to dispel anxiety and encourage confidence

The Problem With Silver Ravenwolf
Essentially: much of what she writes is unethical, bigoted, a lie, or simply wrong. She’s the poster girl for “bad witchcraft 101 books”. A lot of people start out with her because her books are easy to find and attractive (for whatever reason) and end up feeling betrayed later on when they discover something she wrote and they believed isn’t actually true.

Witches Stealing Penises in Medieval Europe,
Written by Heinrich Kramer in 1486, the Malleus Maleficarum was a book detailing how to root out and deal with witches, and was used to persecute witches in the 16th and 17th centuries. Among the chapters was one entitled “How, as it were, they deprive Man or his Virile Member”. Supposedly, witches had the power to steal a man’s penis,
“And what, then, is to be thought of those witches who in this way sometimes collect male organs in great numbers, as many as twenty or thirty members together, and put them in a bird’s nest, or shut them up in a box, where they move themselves like living members, and eat oats and corn”
Included in the chapter are the accounts of two men who had their penises stolen according to Kramer,
“In the town of Ratisbon a certain young man who had an intrigue with a girl, wishing to leave her, lost his member; that is to say, some glamour was cast over it so that he could see or touch nothing but his smooth body. In his worry over this he went to a tavern to drink wine; and after he had sat there for a while he got into conversation with another woman who was there, and told her the cause of his sadness, explaining everything, and demonstrating in his body that it was so. The woman was astute, and asked whether he suspected anyone; and when he named such a one, unfolding the whole matter, she said: “If persuasion is not enough, you must use some violence, to induce her to restore to you your health.” So in the evening the young man watched the way by which the witch was in the habit of going, and finding her, prayed her to restore to him the health of his body. And when she maintained that she was innocent and knew nothing about it, he fell upon her, and winding a towel tightly about her neck, choked her, saying: “Unless you give me back my health, you shall die at my hands.” Then she, being unable to cry out, and growing black, said: “Let me go, and I will heal you.” The young man then relaxed the pressure of the towel, and the witch touched him with her hand between the thighs, saying: “Now you have what you desire.” And the young man, as he afterwards said, plainly felt, before he had verified it by looking or touching, that his member had been restored to him by the mere touch of the witch.
A similar experience is narrated by a certain venerable Father from the Dominican House of Spires, well known in the Order for the honest of his life and for his learning. “One day,” he says, “while I was hearing confessions, a young man came to me and, in the course of his confession, woefully said that he had lost his member. Being astonished at this, and not being willing to give it easy credence, since the opinion of the wise it is a mark of light-heartedness to believe too easily, I obtained proof of it when I saw nothing on the young man’s removing his clothes and showing the place. Then, using the wisest counsel I could, I asked whether he suspected anyone of having so bewitched him. And the young man said that he did suspect someone, but that she was absent and living in Worms. Then I said: ‘I advise you to go to her as soon as possible and try your utmost to soften her with gentle words and promises’; and he did so. For he came back after a few days and thanked me, saying that he was whole and had recovered everything. And I believed his words, but again proved them by the evidence of my eyes.”

my emotional support rosemary thyme garlic loaf
recipe
3 1/2 cups bread flour
2tsp quick rise yeast
2tsp salt
1 1/2 cups cool water
2tbsp dried thyme
1tbsp garlic powder
2tsp dried rosemary
instructions
1. whisk together all dry ingredients in a large bowl then switch to a spoon as you slowly pour in the water, mixing as you go. keep working the dough and switch to hands as necessary. add extra flour or water as needed in small increments (depending on your environment) and turn out onto a floured surface to gently knead until you reach a dough that is soft and slightly sticky, it should feel a bit 'loose' but stable and shouldn't stick to your hands. this dough doesnt require intense kneading, just a couple mins until it feels incorporated.
2. shape into a ball and drop back into the mixing bowl and cover with plastic wrap or a dishtowel at room temp to rise for 2-3 hours (precise temp isn't necessary). after 2-3 hours the dough should be roughly 2x the original size, stick to the sides of the bowl and have little air bubbles all over.
3. (optional) move dough to the fridge to rest overnight or for roughly 12~ hours. you can actually bake it after the 2-3 hours is up but it tastes best when left to rise for longer. longer rise = better flavour.
4. turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead for a min or two, just folding it on itself until it feels cohesive before shaping it into a ball again. plop it on a sheet of high temp oven-safe parchment paper and cut a large X slash in the centre with a sharp knife or scissors. cover gently with plastic wrap or dishtowel and let sit for 30 mins.
5. get out your dutch oven and place it in the oven with the lid on, and preheat oven to 475°F. the dutch oven will heat with the oven, we want it very hot when the dough gets placed in. once the oven is ready/done preheating, remove the dutch oven and place the loaf inside with the parchment paper included, close the lid and put it back in the oven.
6. bake for 25 mins with the lid on. remove the lid and continue baking 8-10 mins until the crust is golden. carefully remove pot from the oven, remove the bread from the pot and let cool on a wire rack for 30 mins before slicing/serving. the resulting bread should have a crispy crust but very soft inside. works best as a bread for soups, snacks, and on its own warmed up with some soft butter and cheese.
