As a young journalist covering technology during the first big wave of virtual reality in the 1990s, I had a brainstorm: This nascent medium that was being touted as entertainment could be much more.

I envisioned a future when my personal and professional passion for news would merge with what seemed like a revolutionary technology to create something never seen before: VR in journalism.

I called it “joVRnalism.”

Today, it seems like that future is emergent.

JOVRNALISM aims to convene the conversation about how VR can and should be used to make good journalism, and to make journalism better in the public interest.

The nightly U.S. current affairs TV show ABC News Nightline [ http://nightline.tumblr.com ], once anchored by venerable journalist Ted Koppel, utterly ignored the Guardian newspaper's revelations of NSA spying on U.S. citizens last week. Instead, they ran gossip, fluff and pop culture stories. Most egregiously, they had a special edition show last Thursday, June 6,  about superheroes and the upcoming Superman movie, Man of Steel, the same night that the Guardian broke another big story that refuted the NSA's public claims about its capabilities — which also happened to be the anniversary of D-Day. Worse, Nightline continued to hype the superhero story through Saturday. Shameful.

  Description From open journalism and distributed pro-am collaboration to realtime crisis mapping, ambient sensing and distribution, wearable computing, predictive journalism, news AI (artificial intelligence), big data and beyond, this session examines emergent technologies’ ground-level disruptive impact on practical newsgathering, how they are being used, and what lies ahead.

Participants will leave with an understanding of seismic shifts to come and critical making for a practical, strategic framework to build the sustainable news services of the future.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED:

What disruptive change and technologies will shape news in the near to medium term?

How will change affect collection, production and markets for news?

What is a journalist’s role in making this happen?

How can journalists critically, and strategically lead and prepare for change?

How can journalists collaborate with citizen mappers to improve the quality of their coverage?
