Bee Cool
Kansas July heat has arrived! In order to help the bees maintain a constant 95 degrees in their hives, my assistant, Josh, and I painted the hive lids white (they are metal) and then added pig weed over the lids for extra coolness. Cancer Healed

Honey Bear Harvest
Twenty-twenty-six is proving to be a record year for honey harvest. The consistent rains kept the white clover coming which, in turn, has supplied ample nectar for record production. Honey Harvest
After seeding white clover for two years in the snow, we finally have a bumper crop of the finest honey produced. Iām harvesting early so clover will be the only flowers in this crop. Later in the summer, the bees will make darker honey which is also delicious, but clover makes the lightest honey.Ā Some frames are not yet capped over, so I have to pick which frames are ready, then flick the beesā¦

Mint Harvest
Ā Last week I cut the tops off the abundant growth of mint around the patio. The best time to harvest mint is in the early morning just before blooms set on. Cut the tops off the mint plants. Then strip the leaves from the branches (Picture #1). Many people put the newly-stripped leaves in a food dryer or spread them on a cookie sheet in a very low oven. A Milestone of Achievement
This past week I was able to attend the graduation of my grandson, Sam, at the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO as a II Lieutenant. He graduated 61st in his class of 931 students with a major in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Spanish. The week was filled with various award ceremonies and activities leading up to the graduation. Now he is off to Sheppard Air Forceā¦

Busy Bees
May is a great time for bees to do what bees do. Last January I sowed more Irish Clover in the snow. Now in the hivesā front yard is a lovely carpet of clover for the girls to descend on turning the bounty of the whiteness into lovely, light-colored sweetness. Spring Showers
As the old saying goes, āApril showers bring May flowers.ā April showers also bring full ponds! Just to the right of the dead tree in the middle is a dock. Itās almost under water. For a long time I had tingling and numbness in my thumb and next two fingers. This year seems to be particularly difficult for queen health. To keep a hive from swarming, I split the hive and purchased a new queen for the new colony.
