Ugh, this quilt being the end of me.

Strained the propolis Tincture and dehydrated it to a paste, to then blend with an oil for beauty use. I want to make lip balm.

The blizzard up north brought cold nights, so we wrapped the hives again.

Brazilian green propolis, already known for its antioxidant and immune‑supporting properties, was tested in a new nano‑encapsulated form to see whether it could help block SARS‑CoV‑2. The researchers packaged the propolis extract into tiny, stable micro‑droplets so its key compounds (especially artepillin C) could enter cells more effectively and be released slowly. In lab studies, this nano‑form reduced the amount of virus in infected cells by up to 99%, especially for the Delta variant, and it worked best when present at the very start of infection, suggesting it interferes with the virus’s ability to enter cells. It also lowered viral levels in human tonsil tissue by more than 80% and significantly reduced major inflammatory molecules (IL‑6, IL‑1β, TNF‑α) that contribute to severe COVID‑19 symptoms. While the propolis itself wasn’t able to directly “kill” the virus outside cells, its nano‑encapsulated form made it far more potent at blocking early infection and calming inflammation. Overall, the study suggests that nano‑encapsulated Brazilian green propolis could be a promising natural add‑on for preventing or reducing the severity of COVID‑19, though more research, especially in humans, is needed to confirm these effects.

Antimicrobial properties of selected propolis samples

Propolis, a natural resinous substance collected by honeybees from buds and exudates of plants, is known for its use in the beehive as a protective barrier against intruders. It is widely used as a popular remedy in folk medicine and as a constituent of bio-cosmetics. Recently, it is extensively used in food and beverages to improve health and prevent diseases. Depending on the season, bee species, vegetation and the area of collection, the chemical composition of propolis are qualitatively and quantitatively variable, resulting in diverse biological properties. In this project, the antimicrobial activity of several propolis samples obtained from various parts of the world (Europe, Australia, USA and the Philippines) was determined. The propolis samples were extracted with ethanol and the extracts were assayed with Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms. Results demonstrate that propolis is effective against a range of opportunistic pathogens, with the samples from Russia and Washington showing the most potent antibacterial activity, inhibiting seven microorganisms each. The propolis from the Philippines (Bicol and Laguna) also exhibited notable antimicrobial effects, although to a slightly lesser extent.

Long time no post! How is everyone??? I moved!

The bees are *mostly* alright based on my most recent “checkup” and I’m only down one and a half colonies that I knew were already weak. One of them I suspect was taken out due to a leak in the lid that made the wood damp and less insulating. They must have left very early in the season because the bottom of the hive was FULL of wax moth cocoons and eggs and cockroach poop and all kinds of nastiness. I scraped it out and didn’t see any sign of lasting mold on the wood though so it mustn’t have been too damp.

The other four langs are doing just dandy as well. All have enough bees in them to show activity at 50f and overcast so they’re apparently healthy. Already bringing in pollen too!

The super hive seems to be doing incredibly well also! They have propolized up the front of the hive in what I can only presume is an effort to manage air flow and the openness of the entrance. Since I seldom ever check the front 10 frames I suppose that’s alright, though if they are to abscond it will be a chore to get those frames out.

As mentioned, I did move! The bees are still at my old bee yard, but my new place has a nice open yard that I can put them in so I’ll be moving them soon hopefully. I’m setting up bee benches according to a guide I found on YouTube that is all metal and can be adjusted/moved as necessary, because the yard is unlevel everywhere. I tested several positions on each side with my full weight and they seem to hold up quite well. Though I think I may need to adjust some of them because I may have overdone the forward slope a bit. You can really see how uneven the yard is, since the benches are level.
