i work (a lot) as an infectious disease scientist focusing on microbiology, mycobacteriology, and virology at a respiratory/research hospital

ive been on this site since roughly 2011 using a different blog but left briefly while in college. ive been forced back here but mostly just use this to reblog art and whatever else i see fit. asks are open to whatever!

why is it human instinct when a finger gets a cut to put it in your mouth. just pricked my finger on a needle and immediately did this and was reminded of when i broke a glass ampule of a chemical at work and got a bit of glass in my finger. employee health didnt like that my answer to "did you wash the cut" was "well. after i put it in my mouth."

knee surgery recovery entry number 8

performed PT again at home today. ive only been at it a couple days but its incredible how much progress ive made. that being said, the incisions are quite sore and stiff now but that is to be expected.

tried to take a shower this morning. still unable. until im able to bend my knee, i think im going to have to keep doing modified ways of cleaning as the tub is too short for me to extend my leg. i have, however, developed a much better technique for washing my hair that doesnt include trying to flood my bathroom.

my mom still comes by during the day to help out but im much more independent now. occasionally, she'll push me to try things im not ready for (see: shower) and ill end up crying due to panic or frustration. i dont believe she knows what to do in these instances. shes started asking me questions about gaster when it happens and i tend to calm down and answer her. whatever works

knee surgery recovery entry number 7

PT went well today. everyone at the office remembered me from before i had surgery and was asking how i was. goal is to be able to bend my knee 90° in a week. currently i can bend it about 20°.

learned that my kneecap had probably been dislocated for years as i wasnt aware it was supposed to be in the middle of your leg. its always been shifted towards the outside. cool

pain.

not even a normal sense of pain. no throbbing, no sharpness, just a light stinging. no, this is bone deep. a feeling of wrongness. my brain doesnt know how to process this feedback, the synapses are confused. something is wrong, but its indescribable how or what or why. it brings tears to my eyes, but i cant pinpoint a reason.

i just have to wait for the pain meds to kick in and dull the receptors so i can sleep.

didnt move a lot today. i walked around so much yesterday that im feeling the reprocussions today. incisions are starting to both itch and sting which is both a good and bad thing. it means theyre starting to heal, but at the same time i moved them too much yesterday and they hurt

nerve damage is roughly the same today. hard to tell if its slowly getting better or if im getting better at positioning myself to reduce the sharp burn. was alone for a couple hours earlier today, read a couple chapters of a gaster x reader fanfic, and entered into such a beautiful calm meditative state whilest doing so.

tomorrow is my first physical therapy appointment. very afraid.
