Getting my fix on while I tye flies today. No football today.
I occasionally tie stuff for the dark side. Here are some jigs I patterned off the String Bean Fly you can find on my website. If it was all chartreuse, it would be like the Green Bean fly.
An instructional video on tying a classic feathers and fur deceiver fly I published on the Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers’ YouTube page.
Still is my favorite deceivers--old school feathers and fur. I call this one the Craig's Nite Deceiver. I have taken my personal best Snook and Redfish on this as well as a large number of baby tarpon
This is a new fly I'm working on, but not quite finished with. It uses the new Fish Skulls Shrimp & Cray Tails as weight and an EP Brush. I'm calling it the Hairy Leg Mantis Shrimp
Tarpon can be fussy during the daytime. Instead of the typical dark profile pattern, cast them a Tiger Double Bunny Tarpon Fly. The double bunny tail and just the right amount of flash, collared with breathable Arctic Fox. Sinks well and the hair pulses with any movement. Tied on a Gamakasu SC15-2H #3/0 hook which is super sharp and plenty strong.
These beauties are Deep Purple Double Bunny Tarpon Flies. They are tied on a Gamakatsu SC15-2H #3/0 hook with a correct amount of flash, purple thread, and epoxy top coat. I leave a bit of room at the front for the option to snell the hook. Tarpon Time is coming soon!
A large number of Bay Whistlers on their way to some beach Snook fishing. Some with bead chain eyes, some with mini lead eyes. All with epoxied heads tied on an uber sharp Dai Riki 930 #4 hook. Catch the beach fishing action!
These are a group of EP Fiber Pinfish Deceiver Flies I completed this evening. These are tied on a VMC 7106BN #1/0 hook. I really prefer these hooks to the Gamakatsu’s due to their weight, and the triple micro barb.
A gaggle of white EP Fiber Deceiver flies tied on a VMC 7106BN #2 hook. It is fascinating how each of these are tied exactly the same way yet look so different. These represent three different colors of EP Fiber in white, and two different colors of EP Sparkle. EP Fiber offers like 6 different variations of what I call white--none look alike. Look at all of them before you blend them with other colors.
A good sales week. Catching up. Tied 40 EP Deceiver Flies this evening. Still need to be brushed out, trimmed and 3D eyes added
These are a smaller #2 sized Glow-in-the-Dark EP Fiber Deceiver Flies tied on VMC 7106BN hooks. Dummy forgot to order 3D eyes last week...
I’m astonished Enrico Puglisi has not included any deceiver tied from this glo-in-the-dark material in the patterns he sells. I tie this one to fish for snook around lighted docks--it work well in daylight too
FOTD. Chernobyl Crab. A Tim Borski creation, it looks like a mess but it does catch fish. I use it more after October, when targeting reds.
Tim picked this fly up from Les Fulcher, a good friend of Tim’s. It was originally called the Bonefish Joe. Look in Dick Brown’s bonefish book.
The IFFF has a Fly Tying Skills Award Program. There is a Bronze, Silver and Gold level program. The Silver and Gold levels of this program are being drawn up currently. I was asked by the program chair to have one of my flies included for the Gold Level program. I have just received confirmation that it was accepted. I will start by saying it was originally a Flip Pallot designed fly. I have simply put my spin on it. It's called The Prince of Tides, and although it was designed for bonefish, I've modified it for redfish in my local. The Gold Fly Tying Skills Award Program will likely begin next year.
I’m playing around with different forms of articulation of a fly lately. This one should be up on my website soon. It’s called the Flashdancer. Swims much like a Seaducer with a tail that kicks side to side and up and down. It’s about 3 1/4″ long.
Fabrizio Gajardoni really understands how to tie baitfish. A master!
