Chief Mountain Summit
February 13, 2016
I chose this photo because i love the shadows on the rocks and how it relates to this project. I think it is awesome because your eye is drawn to the rocks which are a majority of the photo, but then you look up and see amazing mountains. Overall I think it’s a great photograph and very unique.
Shore Chapter 5 Reflection
In chapter 5 Shore discusses mental modeling. He states that when a picture is taken the one taking the picture holds a mental image in their head which is the result of prodding on insight, conditioning, and comprehension of the world. This is a model that happens unconsciously as the photographer is taking the picture. Each level of this model builds on one another. The model gives understanding and meaning to the photograph and allows for expression. This also plays a role in how we interpret a picture. We create a mental model in our head of how the image directly relates to us. I thought this chapter was very interesting because you can begin to see the process in which we take pictures and how our brain is processing what we see thorough the lens at that time.
Chapter 4: The Mental Level
In chapter 4, The Mental Level is discussed. The mental level is how your brain processes and sees a space or an image in front of you. The mental level is similar to the mental image, because your brain is creating the mental level to create the mental image. The mental level is determined by what is being photographed. This can be made up of the lighting of the photo, space in which the photo is being photographed, shadows and much more. The deceptive level is also mentioned in this chapter as being similar to the mental level. The deceptive level deals with depth and structure more then the mental level does, and it is all up to the photographers eye to determine these things.
MOUNTAINS & SNOW ‘16
Morning view over the frozen lake San Murezzan, St. Moritz towards the mountain peaks of Piz Languard and Piz Albris.
I really like this photo and the use of rule of thirds because your eye is not immediately drawn to the mountains. If this picture did not have the side wall in it, it would just be a landscape photo of the swiss alps. Since it does have some sort of wall coming in on the side it makes you think about the photo more; like who took it, where are they staying, why did they choose to incorporate that into the photo? It adds detail and character to the photo and thats why it stood out to me.

Assignment #4

I really like this photo because of the focus and the colors. I love that the focus is immediately at the foreground which draws your attention to the front of the picture instead of the back. I love that the focus allows for the picture to fade into the background. I think the colors in this photo are great and the vibrant green coming through the rock which really makes the picture pop. I think this shows deterioration of landscape and rocks over time. I like how you can also see the deterioration of the rocks themselves over time.

Chapter 3 - The Depictive Level
Chapter 3 discusses what attributions go into making up a photo. The dedicative level of a photograph is made up of flatness, frame, time and focus. Shore describes pictures as being flat because they are on a flat plane. The picture is framed by the edges in the photo which is created by what you see through the lens. The time in a photograph is determined by the exposure duration. The focus of the photograph gives each photo definition and emphasis on a certain aspect of the photo.
This chapter then goes on do describe Szarkowski’s five key elements of photography. The first is the photograph itself. The second is the detail, which allows for expression of self within the photograph. The third element is the frame, which he states is the central act of photography. A photograph’s key element is time, it represents only the present and is determined through a shorter or longer exposure. The final element is vantage point, which has allowed photographer’s to photograph the unexpected and get different pictures from different angles.
This picture was eye catching to me because of the lighting and the way the waves are hitting the rocks. I love the way the sunset is reflected upon the water and it almost looks like the light is shining through the mountains. I love the light subtle pink tones in this photo and I think it really makes the photograph unique.

Shore Chapter 2 Reflection - The Physical Level
Shore describes the physical level of a photograph being what is represented as the actual picture is taken. It is the color, static, flatness and edges of the photograph. These attributes make up the photo, and make each photo unique. The plane of the picture is represented through the flatness of a photo. The edges show the boundaries of the photo and frame the photograph in a certain way. The static of the photo represents the time in which the photo was taken place; were there moving objects or were you standing still? The color of the photo can change the meaning of the photo, time of day and lighting all make up the parts of a photo. Color adds description to a photo.
Early Morning at McWay Falls in Big Sur, CA

I love this shot, Big Sur is one of my favorite spots in CA. I love that this is an early morning shot so the light reflects beautifully along the cliffs and water.
