On the walls of the underground corridor of the Osirion, the great shrine of Abydos, are depicted the most important funeral texts of the New Kingdom – the Amduat and the Book of Gates, which tell how the Sun overcomes the boundless spaces of the other world.
The twelfth hour of the night ends, the sun begins to rise, and, according to the Book of Gates, Nun—the father of all gods, the personification of the primordial ocean—rises from the abyss, holding the solar Boat of Millions of Years. At its center is the Sun, represented by the scarab Khepri and the disk, flanked by the goddesses Isis and Nephthys. On the boat, besides the Sun, are its "shemsu," companions who help maintain the world order of Maat; the helmsmen of the boat are Hu (the divine, creative word) and Sia (universal wisdom).
At the top, the solar disk is supported by a tiny figure of the sky goddess Nut, which, in turn, stands on the head of a figure of a deity coiled into a circle. This is Osiris, whose body is the receptacle of the Otherworld.
On the bow of the boat, dreaming of immortality, King Merneptah kneels and extends his palms in a prayer pose, during whose reign these secret scenes were used to decorate the walls of the Osirion chambers.
