“Hey, that’s cheating!” Dan laughed as Phil sneakily tried to buy a house for his plot. The two were playing a very intense game of Monopoly.
“Dang it, you finished ordering the pizza right as I was about to get away with it’” Phil sighed dramatically, failing to contain a giggle. Dan playfully smacked his best friend’s arm and tossed a miniature hotel at him, and they continued the game.
After the entire pizza had mysteriously vanished and everything was cleaned up, Phil said,
“I’m not tired yet, it’s only 10 o'clock. Care to watch a movie?”.
Dan smirked at him as he grabbed High School Musical 1-3 from the shelf. Phil groaned, but settled into the couch. Dan smiled triumphantly and slid the DVD in before plopping down on the opposite side of the couch.
After the second movie, Dan’s favorite, Phil got up to make popcorn. Dan was getting tired but refused to conclude the mini movie marathon. He fell over side ways and laid across the couch with his legs dangling off the edge. Phil came back and simply sat beside Dan’s head on the sofa and held the popcorn out to him. Dan smiled and grabbed a handful before getting up to put the last disc of the night in.
“That wasn’t so bad, was it?” Dan grinned at Phil.
Phil rolled his eyes and said “it’s almost 2 in the morning. Go to bed you goof,” as he headed to his bedroom, laughing. Dan turned to his room and pulled off his jeans before climbing under the covers.
Dan woke up to a loud thud, and turned to see it was 3:36 am. He looked out the window and instantly realized what he had heard was thunder. He laid very still, willing himself to fall back asleep, but he knew it wasn’t going to happen. He felt like a little kid for being scared of something as silly as a thunderstorm, and after a whole 4 minutes he sucked up his pride. He pulled on some gym shorts and made his way to Phil’s room.
“Um Phil, do you happen to be awake?” Dan asked nervously.
“Yeah, storm woke me up. is something wrong?” Phil replied.
“I sound like I’m a bloody 6 year old, but I’m freaked out because of the storm and I can’t sleep and I’m scared and tired and I didn’t know what to do so I was wondering if I could stay in here tonight?” Dan rambled.
Phil laughed softly and patted the space beside him.
“Come on over bear. You know you’re always welcome in here when you’re scared. ”
Dan sat down on the far edge of Phil’s bed and awkwardly attempted to lay down.
Phil let out a soft sigh and said, “Get under the covers, silly boy. It’s cold in here and that position can’t be comfortable.”
Dan smiled in appreciation and ducked under the duvet. Wow, he thought. Phil smelt of raspberries and vanilla and sunshine. He wanted to cuddle up to adorable, sleepy best friend, but he knew he couldn’t do that, it would make things weird in the morning.
Those thoughts were abandoned at the next loud clap of thunder several minutes later, and Dan grabbed Phil’s arm. Phil pulled him closer and wrapped his arms around Dan, letting him know that he was safe. Dan whispered, “Thank you. And for not laughing at me.” Phil responded by lightly pressing a kiss to his forehead. Did Phil like him? No way, he’s just trying to be kind. Dan felt his face get turn bright red, and was thankful that Phil couldn’t see it.
The next morning the two men woke up a tangle of limbs. They both grinned sheepishly as they got out of bed.
“Sorry that you have to witness the mess that is my hair in the morning,” Phil said.
Dan replied, “Don’t be. It’s actually kinda cute.” He turned his head away, surprised that he had just said that out loud. Phil was definitely gorgeous, no one could deny that. But he was also so creative and sweet, it was impossible for Dan not to have a crush on him, even though he had a hard time admitting this to himself.
Phil smirked. “Are you trying to be nice after I let you stay with me last night or are you trying to flirt with me?”
“Well, it depends what you want it to be,” Dan said, blushing harder than he ever had before.
Phil looked a bit shocked, not expecting that answer from Dan. He was glad though, because he loved Dan, how could he not? He was as close to perfect as one can get.
Phil answered with, “Honestly? I’m not opposed to option number 2.” Dan turned an even deeper shade of red and smiled.
“Well, are we in agreement?” Phil said with a massive smile on his face. Dan decided that the easiest way to communicate his answer would be to simply push Phil over, wrap his arms around him, and kiss him. When he pulled away, Phil looked like he had just been hit with a bus. Of happiness.
“Now I can keep you safe every night.”
