After an early morning walk through Reykjavik on our last day on the beautiful and most welcoming island of Iceland 🇮🇸 we gawked at the canton between the tectonic plates of Northern America and Eurasia. Thursday night before heading to our room after dinner a lady from the hotel told us there was some great aurora action going on and indeed!! We feel blessed to have been able to witness this spectacular view. The last episode of my 3 week trip took me from Caux to Montreux. I chose to pass by Chateau Chillon as I’ve never seen it for myself yet and the sight was totally worth it. After I arrived at Montreux I snapped a pic of Freddie Mercury and then finally stepped over the finishing line of the #viaalpina - what an elevating feeling!! I did it, I finished the hike over 14 (of which I was able to complete 13) alpine passes and close to 390km. Today’s second to last leg of the #viaalpina started early in the deserted town of Rossinière. My path brought me along horribly steep terrain where I couldn’t snap pictures because I was too busy not dying of fear if falling. But all went well and soon I was greeted by local cows. Glimpsing a first sight of #lacleman🇨🇭 was definitely a highlight and when I first saw the station on Rochers de Naye it brought a little tear of joy, pride and honestly relieve forward 💧 So oroud of myself for having finished all the uphill parts of Via Alpina. Today I was able to enjoy half a leg of my journey in most pleasant company. My companions left me at Château d’Oex where we celebrated our companionship at Hotel de Ville before I headed off to my next destination, Rossinière. On my today’s trip from Gstaad to L’Etivaz I soon got presented with a very personal display by Patrouille Suisse or some other aerobatics brigade. Soon today’s main goal, the mountain pass Col de Jable came into view, the pass that divides the German from the French speaking part of Switzerland. Ever since I’ve passed it I’ve been talking knots into my tongue, trying to find the right words in the proper language (for some reason I keep mixing in Spanish and Italian, both of which languages I don’t speak much better than French…🙄). However, so far I was able to make myself understood. Today’s hike from Lenk to Gstaad was rather moderate in steepness but quite long. An additional 3km hike in total for my dinner didn’t keep me from having a proper meal. Today’s leg of my #viaalpina journey brought us from Adelboden to Lenk. It was a rather tame stage with only 700m ascend and 1000m descent. Today started a totally different chapter - First: Relaxation day. Today was my personal queen’s stage: I reached the highest point of #viaalpina on Hohtürli, or Blüemlisalp hut respectively at over 2700masl. The ascent was steep and so was the descent. I’m glad to call Kandersteg my home for the next two nights in a hotelroom with whirlpool that can be moved out onto the balcony 😁 My mom joined me tonight to enjoy the well deserved rest with me. Last night my dear friend @pixpoochie came to visit me. Even though he had only just had knee surgery this spring he wanted to accompany me on the hike from Lauterbrunnen to Griesalp. It turned out that his knee was never a problem, more so his fright of heights - this leg of the #viaalpina was awfully steep with loose gravel and snowfields up to where a stair resembling more of a ladder brought us to the very top of Sefinafurgga. #pixpoochie was actually quite relieved to see that quite a thick fog had built up on the other side of the mountain so he didn’t have to see what the descent looked like. The day started as usual over the last week: First very wet, but once I leave it dries up and gets friendlier. The hike up to Kleine Scheidegg started out brutal, straight uphill. The path seems more moderate only for a few brief times but that means you’re up on top quite quickly. We made it well under 3h. The descend is quite steep as well but quite a bit longer, still it posed no problem and we took the Kernen-S swiftly. We started the day with a ride in the Reichenbach Falls funicular to see Sherlock Holmes’ alleged death place. The weather was unexpectedly well-disposed and we made the trip over the Grosse Scheidegg pretty much dry.
