Working on the Blaze Festival 2012 (:
Blaze Festival 2012 was a huge success!
After months and months of dedication , planning and hard work, we finally took over Miller Park in Preston and created a two day festival which attracted many people with a huge buzz on the 8th and 9th September..
On the friday before the weekend, I made...

The plant pots were wearing jumpers!
Finishing the boards before the festival. Seems like it was just yesterday!
Our first look at the festival tents. Huge moment!
Here are some of things that were taken into account at the festivals:
- To be ready for all types of weather – i.e. both days were extremely hot and sunny so it was important that water, mats and sun cream were readily available – but on the other hand it would be appropriate to have places to shelter and rain ponchos available should the weather deteriorate on the Blaze weekend
- Pleasant portaloo experiences – we all noticed the differences between the two sites!
- Child changing areas for families
- Different varieties of food, e.g. vegetarian/halal, etc.
- Large, aesthetic, building-like structures which gave the site character through visual/artistic appeal
- A big screen was found to be very important as it allowed for a better connection between the performers and audience, especially those further away
- DJ’s and presenters or acts in between the changeovers of artists to keep the audience entertained. The idea formed from this for our own festival was a flashmob-type act on stage and-
- Audience interaction
- Interviews with security, tips and how it’s important
- Good relationships with artists

Blaze on tour – Sadly our three day run in London is over and we’re set for another meeting with the Blaze festival producers crew ready for September.
From 20th – 22nd July 2012, 10 festival producers [including the wonderful Sheni and Jane] visited the BT River of Music festival in London [while others visited Trastock festival in Sweden]. For some of us it was our first time in the city so naturally we felt very excited and privileged. The festival consisted of six stages, however we visited two – the Africa and Oceania stage. This was particularly interesting as it gave people the opportunity to choose which types of music they wanted to listen to and attend those sites – it was spread over a large area which gave the festival individuality.
It was a fantastic opportunity which gave me insight into the inner workings of a festival and provided valuable information that could only be appreciated and understood when experienced first-hand. In all, I found the atmosphere very different and very pleasant at the same time. At the Africa stage, the atmosphere was very busy and lively, whereas the Oceania stage was more relaxed and calm, but that didn’t stop our Blazers from getting up for a dance!
The next post will share some things that were learnt from the festivals.
