SHE  COULDN'T  HELP  BUT  let  out  a  softly  snorted  type  of  laugh,  knocking  back  the  shot  in  her  hand  then,  before  responding.  ❝  a  little  column  a,  little  column  b..❞  shoulders  push  up  into  a  shrug.  she  hadn't  so  much  as  been  staring  at  the  red-head  as  she  so  happened  to  glance  at  her  within  that  particular  moment  —  a  little  too  long  it  would  seem.  a  tendency  she  seemed  to  have  but  in  this  place  it  was  hard  not  to  stay  at  least  a  little  vigilant.  one  of  those  lessons  taught  when  she  was  younger,  to  always  stay  on  your  guard,  and  while  rocky  wasn't  expecting  anything  too  chaotic  to  pop  off,  if  the  peace  was  meant  to  be  kept  that  is.  there's  no  forgetting  just  how  many  people  surrounding  them  were  trained  in  certain  arts,  herself  included,  that  could  still  pose  a  hazard  regardless.

❝  sometimes  staring  can  actually  be  a  valuable  tool,  for  example  my  personal  favorite  is  giving  someone  the  death  stare  until  they  give  in,  much  like  how  i  was  even  able  to  get  this  seat  considering  how  packed  this  place  is.  ❞  even  down  on  this  end  the  bar  had  been  filled  up  but  she  wanted  a  drink,  and  too  bad  for  the  poor  saps  that  were  just  over  here  having  a  conversation,  that  she  happened  upon  them.  one  might  think  that  at  a  towering  5'5"  she  couldn't  look  intimidating,  but  she  didn't  carry  a  reputation  and  air  of  'could  kill  you  if  feeling  so  inclined'  for  nothing.  ❝  don't  worry  though,  in  your  case  i  come  in  peace.  ❞

Mia laughed softly into her drink. She wasn't worried at all. Not because she underestimated anyone or anything. But because she didn't care. It was funny how the human's brain was programmed to fear death. To avoid it. To spend every waking second trying to outrun it. Then one day she brushed up against it. And suddenly it stopped looking quite so monstrous. Not so much of a bad alternative to life itself.

Her fingers rolled the now emptied glass between her palms. The ice cubes clashing against one another. Her eyes drifted toward the crowd before returning to Rocky. There was something familiar about her. Not in the sense that they'd met. More like recognizing a type. Someone who sat with their back protected. Someone whose attention never fully settled in one place. Someone who came to a neutral-ground casino and still looked prepared for things to go sideways. Mia understood that kind of vigilance. Maybe a little too well.

Her fingers tapped once against the side of her glass before she nodded toward Rocky's empty shot glass. "Come on." Reaching into her pocket, Mia dropped a few bills onto the bar. "Anyone bold enough to steal a seat through psychological warfare deserves at least one more drink."

her eyes raised to him, assessing quietly. be that expression, tone or posture, sky took note of it all, cataloguing the details of what was present, before setting her now emptied glass down on the bar and waiting with a certain amount of patience for the promised next one. "hm, how odd of you, then," but if there was one less person attempting to drag her into tonight's entertainment and losses, then she wasn't going to complain. even if that still required staying in some stage of alert, even in this moment.

"disappointed in what way?" she asked, gaze drifting just past him then towards the bartender as he prepared the waiting drinks. for a brief moment in her silence, she almost wished to will him to move quicker. "in the night? the company? or the simple fact we've established you're not asking me to gamble?" the corner of her mouth twitched upwards, just a little, faint amusement at least breaking through it. "because i wouldn't call any of it.. disappointing," her gaze returned to him then, "boring, perhaps. predictable and a little tiring given i can think of plenty of other way to occupy my night. but not necessary disappointed."

Kian watched her attention drift toward the bartender and found himself suppressing another smile. There was something almost amusing about the way she tracked the progress of the drinks with far more interest than anything happening on the casino floor. A quiet hum left him at that. "Predictable," he repeated. The word lingered for a moment as he turned his glass between his fingers. "I think that's worse." His gaze wandered briefly across the room. "Does it mean you were looking forward to losing money against someone then?" Kian arched an eyebrow in amusement, despite his expression remaining calm. "I'm afraid I know too much about probability to enjoy gambling." His gaze drifted toward a nearby blackjack table, where a man was celebrating a win he'd likely give back before the night was over. "If I wanted to lose money, I'd invest in someone's brilliant business idea." His attention returned to her, the dry humor sitting comfortably in his voice. The bartender finally arrived, setting a fresh glass in front of her, and Kian waited until he was gone before continuing. "So... What exactly were you hoping to find tonight?"

A soft snort escaped Shay, the sound nearly silent yet somehow still rife with amusement all the same. "People tell me it's rude to do a lot of things"—blocking doorways, interrupting others mid-sentence, throwing entire bottles of tequila at Rafe's head—"but that doesn't mean I have to listen."

From the time she was little she'd never been the type to care much for living her life by someone else's rules, or anyone else's standards. Her mother blamed it on being one half her father, as if the lawless nature running through her veins was some kind of genetic curse. Shay reckoned being like Charlie Schaffer was a hell of a lot better than being like her.

"Besides, I wasn't staring at you, I was staring at him." Him being one of only two bartenders on deck, and both currently lost in the weeds. "The other end's a lost fuckin' cause, so I was hoping I'd have better luck down here in getting my hands on a new drink." Having already bet ( and subsequently lost ) all of her money at the Blackjack tables earlier in the evening, Shay needed something to keep her busy.

Too much time with too little entertainment never ended well for her. Or anybody.

"Quick," abruptly, and with a crooked smile, she nudged an elbow into Mia's arm. "Flash a little nipple in that direction and maybe we'll both get lucky tonight."

Mia barked out a laugh before she could stop herself. The sound was genuine. Dangerous, really. Because anybody who could make her laugh that quickly usually ended up becoming a problem. Shay had managed that almost immediately. "Jesus Christ." She shook her head into her glass. "See, that's exactly why nobody should let you out in public." The corner of her mouth tugged upward as she glanced toward the overwhelmed bartender. Then back to Shay. "Though for the record, if either of us flashes a nipple in this place, I'm fairly certain security throws us out before we ever get another drink. Which means we'd both lose." And Mia hated losing.

Her gaze drifted across the casino floor for a moment, taking in the sea of people pretending they weren't watching one another. She took another sip of her whiskey before looking back toward Shay. "You know, I can't decide if you're actually bored or if you're physically incapable of existing without causing a disturbance." Her eyes narrowed slightly. Thoughtful. Suspicious. Amused. "Actually, no." Mia took another sip, her drink vanishing dangerously quick. "I can decide. It's the second one." Mia nudged her shoulder lightly in return. A familiar kind of ease settling between them. The kind that came from knowing enough about each other to skip most of the formalities. "How much did you lose at blackjack?" Her gaze dropped toward Shay's empty hands. Then back up again. "Because that look says either you're broke..." A pause. "...or you're about ten minutes away from making somebody else's evening significantly worse." The smile she offered afterward suggested she wasn't entirely opposed to either outcome.

Mia didn't even like blackjack. She'd said that three drinks ago. Then she'd said it again twenty minutes later. And somehow she was still sitting at the same table.

At some point, one of the players had decided she was responsible for a winning streak and refused to let her leave. Every time she stood up, another hand won. Every time she threatened to walk away, someone bought her another drink and insisted she stay exactly where she was. It was ridiculous. And, admittedly, a little entertaining.

The whiskey warming her system probably helped. "See?" the man beside her said as another round paid out. "I'm telling you, it's the jacket." Mia barked out a laugh. "The jacket?" The man nodded. "Not my stunning personality?" He shook his head. "Rude." The table erupted into laughter. Mia rolled her eyes, shaking her head as she reached for her drink. The sound was unfamiliar enough that she almost didn't recognize it herself. Laughter. Real laughter. Not the polite kind. Not the forced kind. The kind she hadn't managed much of lately.

Her gaze drifted toward the casino floor as she lifted the glass. And froze. Across the room stood a familiar figure. Watching. Her stomach did something profoundly annoying, which she immediately hated. The man beside her was saying something else, but she barely heard him.

Instead, she held the stare for a second. Two. Three. Long enough to recognize the expression. Long enough to know exactly what they were thinking. The corner of her mouth lifted. Then she turned back toward the blackjack table. A fresh hand was dealt. Someone cheered. The man beside her nudged her shoulder. "See? Lucky charm." Mia laughed again. This time her eyes flicked briefly back across the casino. Toward the familiar figure still standing there. Still watching. Still looking entirely too much like trouble. And for reasons she didn't care to examine too closely, she found herself smiling. "Yeah," she murmured, lifting her cards. "Looks like it."

How to get it. How to keep it. How to avoid it. How to use it.

That evening was different. She had no firm objective. No pre-determined mark. No endgame or ultimate goal or elusive finish line to cross. It was almost a novel concept to merely exist within a single slip of time and space at her own discretion, bound by little more than a handful of reminders like 'behave' or 'if you spill blood on the carpets, you pay'.

Both were easy enough to comply with considering she'd been in town barely a breath over four months. She didn't know these people; there hadn't been proper time to manifest vendettas or revenge quests of her own.

So, when his words came, she only pressed the hint of a smile against the rim of her wine. “Interesting that you assume those are the only two options.” 

There was no pretense to her silence, and she was smart enough to assume everyone gathered at the casino was a potential threat.

The answer he sought sat with a much simpler, third thing: while he’d been watching, she’d been waiting.

“I noticed.” Safi's elbow shifted to perch against the bar top, eyes fixed not on him, but on the deep burgundy of her drink. “Decided you were doing it on purpose.” She indulged another sip. “That's when I just got curious. Would you eventually introduce yourself, or just keep hiding behind a piece of crystal all night?”

Impish and bright, her gaze made a pointed shift to his glass then finally lifted to catch him dead in the eye for the very first time. “Looks like I got my answer.”

That last sentence earned her a genuine smile. Small. Brief. Dangerous only in the sense that it revealed he was enjoying himself. "Did you?" Kian rolled the glass between his palms, the crystal catching the warm casino lights as his gaze remained fixed on hers. For all the attention she'd paid to his observation, she'd neglected one important detail. Curiosity was rarely a one-way street. Especially not with him. "I'll admit, I considered leaving without introducing myself." His shoulders rose in a slight shrug. "Then you kept looking back." The observation hung between them. Kian took another slow sip from his glass, eyes never quite leaving hers. "I spent ten minutes trying to decide whether you were waiting for someone." A pause. "Then another five deciding whether you were trying to avoid someone." The corner of his mouth twitched. "Turns out I was wrong on both counts."

His gaze drifted briefly toward the gaming floor. Around them, the casino carried on uninterrupted. Dealers shuffled cards. Chips changed hands. Somewhere nearby, a burst of laughter rose from a roulette table before disappearing back into the noise. The Lucky Coyote excelled at creating the illusion that nothing important was happening. "So," he glance back at her. "Was I worth the wait?"

minho's gaze lifted from the amber liquid swirling lazily in his glass. the corner of his mouth twitched. "i noticed." his voice was calm, rather matter-of-fact. "but if i'd interrupted every person watching me tonight, i'd never get a drink." it came with the territory. his name reached places before he did. people stared because they were curious. or cautious. sometimes both. "as for whether you're a threat..." minho considered him for a moment with far more drama than needed. "you don't strike me as the type. i mean, you surely don't want to have to pay the fee that comes with being a threat on a night as joyous as this one." his gaze drifted briefly across the casino floor. across the smiling faces. the forced laughter. the carefully maintained illusion that five gangs packed into the same building constituted peace rather than a temporary ceasefire. "though perhaps that's unfair." he hummed thoughtfully. "maybe you're simply hiding it exceptionally well."

A quiet laugh escaped him at that. Not because the joke was particularly funny. Because the answer was. Measured. Careful. The sort of response given by someone accustomed to being observed and even more accustomed to deciding exactly how much of themselves other people were allowed to see. Kian turned the glass between his fingers, watching the casino lights fracture across the amber liquid. His gaze drifted briefly toward the crowded floor below. A sea of expensive suits, polished smiles, and carefully concealed agendas. "Smart," Kian replied. "Most people make the mistake of assuming attention is always worth acknowledging." But attention was a currency. And like any currency, it paid to spend it wisely.

At the mention of the fee, the corner of his mouth curved slightly. "I've found threats are rarely the people announcing themselves as such." Kian's eyes settled on Minho once more. Steady. Observant. The kind of gaze that seemed less interested in appearances and more interested in what existed beneath them. "Besides," he continued smoothly, "anyone willing to start a problem in the Lucky Coyote either has a death wish or a remarkable misunderstanding of how this city works." Luckily for him, he was in the position to bend the rules in his favor. Especially when people tended to overlook information as a source of actual threat, unlike guns and knives. His fingers tapped once against the side of his glass. "Now, how about we get you that well-deserved drink? What's your poison of choice?"

Rafe doesn't look her way at first. Like her, he doesn't really feel the need to. He simply settles onto the stool beside her like he owns it, his broad shoulders rolling beneath his jacket as he signals the bartender for another whiskey, his jaw working overtime as if he's chewing over a thought he doesn't particularly care for. At her comment, a low huff escapes him. "A bit rich comin' from you, isn't it?" Only then does he turn his head, his dark eyes finding hers over the rim of the glass she'd been nursing. The smile she gives him earns a shake of his head. It's too familiar, too easy. Which is exactly the problem.

Rafe has never been particularly good at staying away from things that are bad for him. "Mistakes typically imply regret, sweetheart." The nickname slips out automatically, roughened by the whiskey and old habits. He reaches for his drink then, taking a slow sip before setting it back on the bar. "And last I checked, I don't have any." His gaze lingers on her a second too long. Partly because, every time he looks at Mia, he sees pieces of Nico. That same stubborn streak. That same refusal to ask for help even when she's drowning. And, that same infuriating need to carry every burden herself. "Besides," he continues, leaning back against the stool, "if I was gonna avoid every bad decision I've ever made, I'd have to move to another country." A corner of his mouth lifts. "And knowing you, you'd probably show up there too." The teasing fades slightly as his eyes narrow at her half-empty glass. "How many of those have you had?" The question comes too quickly. Too naturally. Like he has any right to ask. Like he hasn't spent the better part of a decade worrying about her when she makes it abundantly clear she doesn't want anybody doing exactly that. Rafe knows the look that'll probably earn him, knows she'll bristle.

Still doesn't stop him. His fingers tap once against the side of his glass before he sighs. "Also, no." His gaze flicks back to hers. "It wasn't an accident." The confession lands easily. "It was purely calculated. I saw your ride outside. Figured I'd check to see whether you were getting yourself into trouble or not." There's a brief pause. "And whether I'd have to save some poor bastard from making the mistake of trying to take you home."

Mia snorted into her drink. The nickname settled somewhere beneath her ribs in a way she refused to acknowledge. Of course. Of course he'd come over. And of course he'd managed to make it sound like he was doing her a favor. The corner of her mouth twitched despite herself. "Shouldn't you be saving me?" Her gaze slid toward him. "Or is this some form of bro code I'm missing out on? Also," she continued, lifting her glass slightly, "the fact that your first concern was some poor bastard trying to take me home says significantly more about you than it does about me. And for the record, I'm perfectly capable of making my own bad decisions."

Her eyes met his. Held. Long enough for the words to mean more than they should. Long enough to remind both of them exactly how familiar they were with each other's mistakes. Then, Mia looked away first. "Three." The answer referring his question about the whiskey came too quickly. A lie. Not a particularly convincing one. Judging by the look on Rafe's face, he knew it. They were three before bringing the glass to her lips became a habit, a way to pass time and eventually Mia had lost count how many times she'd asked for a refill. Yet her mind was still sharp as a razor, only her better judgement was slightly clouded and her annoyance at the whole thing subdued. She swirled the amber liquid around her glass. "Four. Maybe." She leaned her elbows against the bar. For a moment, Mia simply watched the crowd move around them. The casino was loud enough to fill the silence, but not enough to drown out the strange comfort of sitting beside him. "Does it even matter?" She turned to look at Rafe after a split second.

The Lucky Coyote was one of the few places in town where everyone was expected to play nice. It didn't mean they trusted one another. It simply meant the consequences of forgetting yourself were severe enough to keep most people on their best behavior.

Kian sat comfortably at a blackjack table he had no intention of winning, a neat stack of chips resting untouched beside him. The cards in front of him had long since lost his attention. His focus remained fixed elsewhere. For the better part of forty minutes, he'd watched the other man move through the casino floor. He'd catalogued who spoke to him, who avoided him, who watched him when he wesn't looking. Interesting patterns. Interesting enough to warrant further attention.

When Sid finally passed close enough, Kian reached for his drink without looking away. "You know," he said conversationally, as though continuing a discussion already in progress, "most people become significantly less interesting once you learn everything about them." His gaze flicked upward. A moment later, he pushed back from the table and rose to his feet, ignoring the quiet protests of the other players as he followed after the man. "You've managed the opposite." The faint smile that followed was impossible to read. "Which is becoming a problem."

There was no irritation behind the words. Only amusement. He slid a fresh drink across the polished surface toward the brunette before lifting his own glass. "I considered placing bets." A beat. "Five minutes late would've paid even money." Another. "Ten would've made me rich." For a moment, his eyes wandered toward the bustling casino floor before returning to them. "You're lucky I don't enjoy gambling."

The realization was immediate. Mia smiled. Slowly. Dangerously. Pushing away from the wall, she intercepted his way before they could disappear into the crowd. "Hey." The greeting was entirely too friendly. Which made it infinitely more threatening. "You remember that favor you owe me?" A beat, allowing her words to sink in. "Good. Because I just thought of a way you can pay it back."

billy has been loitering near a row of slot machines for a while now, not playing so much as occupying the space beside them. he’s dressed better than usual, which mostly means someone has bullied him into a shirt without an oil stain, though the cigarette tucked between his fingers ruins most of the effort. around him, the lucky coyote is all noise and shine, smug laughter spilling over the machines here and there while glasses catch the light every time someone lifts a drink. he has lasted longer than he thought he would. long enough for one drink and the realization that these things are mostly just people standing around with nicer shoes and worse grudges. not bad, really, for his first proper night at this kind of thing. the lighter clicks once, twice, then gives him absolutely nothing for his trouble. billy looks down at it, unimpressed, before movement nearby pulls his attention. he lifts the useless thing between two fingers, mouth pulling slightly at one corner. “ hey, got a light? ”

Mia glanced up from her drink at the sound of a familiar voice. For a second, her eyes narrowed as she took in the sight of Billy standing there in an actual button-down shirt. The cigarette was somehow the least surprising part. A laugh escaped her before she could stop it. "Jesus Christ." She gestured vaguely in his direction with her glass. "Who died?" Her gaze dropped to the lighter pinched between his fingers before reaching into the pocket of her leather jacket. A moment later, a silver Zippo appeared in her hand. The flame sparked on the first try. Unlike his. "Here." Holding it up between them, she watched the cigarette catch before snapping the lighter shut again. "Don't tell me that's the same piece of shit lighter you've been carrying around for the last six months." The look she gave him suggested she already knew the answer. "You clean up alright, by the way." The corner of her mouth twitched. At least there was something oddly comforting about seeing another Jackal here.

"if you're coming to ask me to join you in a game of god knows what, please hold your breath and save it for another," sky spoke, lifting her wine glass to take another sip as she gave an equal shake of her head; refusal already waiting before the question and answer had been given. for as much as she enjoyed a night out, gambling had never, and never would be, one of her past times. "offer me anything other than creative ways to lose my money, and perhaps my answer will change," her head tilted in thought, "another drink wouldn't go amiss. or a compelling reason as to why i should stay any longer than i already have." that last part sky was rather sure was because there was still something strangely fascinating about watching everyone gathered together at once, in one place. watching the personalities that clashed under the veneer of what was promised to be a pleasant evening. a lingering curiosity remained even over if someone would eventually become foolish enough to turn the night towards violence as it so often did.

The casino's patrons spent their evenings wagering money on probabilities they barely understood. And the house always won eventually. These were all rules of the game itself. His gaze drifted across the casino floor before returning to her. "As for the drink, I imagine that's easily solved." A subtle gesture toward the bartender was enough to signal another round. He didn't ask what she was having. He'd already noticed. "You seem disappointed, though."

The Lucky Coyote was one of the few places in the city where people could pretend the gangs weren't constantly one bad decision away from tearing each other apart. The illusion was almost impressive. Cards shuffled. Glasses clinked. Slot machines chimed endlessly in the background. People laughed. Money changed hands. And beneath it all sat an unspoken understanding that everybody in the building was armed, dangerous, and behaving only because the consequences of not behaving were significantly worse. Mia liked it. Or maybe liked wasn't the right word. Respected it, perhaps.
