hassan misses his mother often, and thinks about her frequently. though her passing was not unexpected, it was still hard. he tries to make her proud though.

hassan is quiet, but his presence commands the room. most nations listen to him during meetings simply because his presence is much larger than it seems. his voice carries easily and he speaks in a melodic tone.

“Ah, then you’ll love hearing about colour palettes and décor, I suppose. My sister, Liechtenstein, is helping to decorate - rather, she will help, once we’ve purchased the property. We’re aiming to sell or rent to business men who are staying in Paris for extended periods.”

he smiles, nodding thoughtfully. a boyish grin curls his lips, “i suppose i should warn you, i’m absolutely awful about colour.” despite his more homely appearances, hassan’s own place was a very modern apartment in cairo, with plenty of space and an open floor plan. “but it sounds lovely, i’m sure your sister has excellent tastes.”

hassan loves his mother, but often feels he is living in her shadow.

“Mellow is good, mellow is calm,” Ludwig replied, shifting from foot to foot. “Nothing too exciting is happening with me, unless you are interested in Parisian estate laws and the economy”

“mellow is relative.” he finishes cheerfully. he ducks his head politely, “i’m always interested in my friends’ lives. heavens know the only people that ever seem to visit me are the mediterraneans.”

hassan enjoys children, and will often interact with the young children and teens that also live in the apartment complex he does in cairo. he enjoys impressing them with magic tricks and teaching them history. 

he sometimes, when he has a break from nation duties, likes to guest lecture at the local university. specifically in ancient history.

hassan keeps three cats in his apartment. all were strays and are just short haired mixed breeds. he feels he isn’t active enough to keep a dog. the cats, however adore him and he spoils them rotten. they are his babies. he mostly keeps them for his mother’s sake, as a sort of hommage to her.

“I… have been well. Thank you.” He’s not sure if the other man wanted the truth of a cold and the irritation of how low the temperatures dropped, so he kept it mild. “And yourself? How is your life?”

he can tell the other is less than truthful, but hassan doesn’t push, “it’s ... mellow. as mellow as things ever get in my life.” he chuckled, a soft, warm sound.

“and you could tell all of that from just my appearance?” she asked, raising an eyebrow at him. “ophelia smith. i appreciate the confidentiality.” she smiles faintly, tucking her hair behind her ear. “i suppose it’s safe to assume that you’re not human as well?”

hassan shakes his head, “we -- i -- am old enough to notice when others are out of place. as alfred might say, there is a disturbance in the force.”  he says, before pausing, “i am not human.”  he gives a thin smile, but does not elaborate.

“it’s been a while since we had a chance to catch up, ludwig. how have you been?” the tone is gentle, friendly and soft.

they sit in silence, side by side as hassan sips his coffee, watching cairo bustle about, “your visit was unexpected, but welcomed all the same.”

the girl can’t help but blush, wondering if it’s even noticeable as she looks over at him. “peculiar. that’s certainly a nice way to describe a girl.” she teased, raising an eyebrow at him. “maybe? i’m not sure who arthur but i suppose it’s possible, though i bet it’s highly unlikely.’ 

“believe me, you’d know arthur if you’d ever met him.” hassan chuckled, dryly. “your accent betrays your origin. but ... you are older than you look. you aren’t human. don’t worry. your secret is safe with me.” a small smile. “hassan al-masri” he introduces, politely,
