i feel so defensive and protective of people with ARFID like if i had a disorder that made my brain register 90% of food as poison for no reason and i had a bazillion people on the internet constantly calling me a manchild who needs to just grow up and stop being a picky eater i would start killing people

when I was taking writing classes at U of T, one of my profs lectured super hard about how we should know everything about our characters BEFORE we even think about writing. their favourite food, favourite music, etc. and then she bragged about how she'd written an entire book's worth of background information on her main character's parents (who only appeared in a few chapters), and how none of it was useable but all of it informed her work. and after the class I looked her up, and she's only published 2 books in the 25+ years of her career, both out of print, with the newest one being like 14 years old. so I was like okay, listen, maybe not all advice should be followed.

I mean maybe that sounds harsh, but also this is someone who took money from us and in return tried to shepherd us into the same paralysis that's clearly been affecting her, so maybe a teensy tiny droplet of harshness is due.

"i hate when people compare me to other artists" your audience likely lacks the vocabulary to articulate what those similarities are and why they resonate with the art bc arts education has been in the toilet for 60 years. they are complimenting you using language available to them under a framework unique to their personal experiences. what you want is a collection of dolls with a pull string you can use to elicit specific praises.
