( @sanguinemagicks -- last bite bistro late, in the evening )
Last Bite Bistro. What an interesting choice of name in a place like Ashwick. where a last bite is more often the cause of death than a stab. The club only opens in two more hours, and she's got some time to spare. After eighty years of loneliness, well, not exactly, but almost, Fiona finds herself searching for company more often than not, and today she has stumbled upon this exact place, spotting a beautiful, enchanting, no, terrifyingly gorgeous creature not only existing, but singing. To be fair, Fiona has always believed in sirens, but her sight convinces her of their existence even more so. She watches the woman finishing up her gig, applauds like the rest of the guests do, and then takes the first chance she gets to slide up at the bar right next to her, pushing a freshly ordered drink in her direction.
"Evening, dollface." Fiona greets her, "Care for a drink with me?" She's in her usual attire. Well-fitted black dress pants paired with a white shirt, enchanted necklace dangling around on top of her chest, and when she sits down on the chair right next to her, she pushes the sleeves of her shirt up, revealing a few minor scars from falls she took as a clumsy child. She isn't any less clumsy now, and her smooth movements are disturbed by the chair getting caught on the floor, which sends her into a gentle stumble. "Aw, man.", Fiona grumbles, "Anyway, name's Fiona, what's yours?"
lucia never had trouble expressing herself. whether through her style, her opinions, her singing. but singing felt mostly like an outlet, a way to work through emotions and thoughts she couldn't quite make sense of. one of her requirements for singing at the bistro was that she was able to choose her own songs, pick and choose depending how she was feeling that particular day. this day though, she was in the mood for slow songs. the band played beautifully and her body swayed to the rhythm of music. it was almost like she was in a trance right until the very end.
once the set was done, she was ready for a break. she moved through the tables with a polite smile, greeting the few familiar faces she spotted as she made her way to the bar. her throat felt dry and in desperate need of refreshments. the sound of a voice had her eyebrow raising, ready to less-than-politely tell the other to fuck right off. but the sight of the young woman caught her attention. there was something...alluring about her, an aura that had lucia second guessing her original assessment. "evening." her voice sounded rougher than usual, but nothing a (free) drink wouldn't fix. lips pursed into a thin line, forcing herself not to outright laugh when the other nearly tripped over herself. "lucia. I don't remember seeing you here before. are you new in town?" as she spoke, she picked up the glass, taking a small sip. she should know better than to accept drinks from strangers, but lucia always did like living on the edge.
"it could be anything at this point." and that was the truth. "maybe something was stolen?" that was always a possibility. the other was the obvious. an affair going on." or maybe someone was having an affair." that seemed to be the most likely one. what ever the reason was though, they probably wouldn't know it any time soon. "the coffee here is pretty good." she said, agreeing with the other.
"wait..." she leaned forward, curiosity peaked. "do you think someone would curse a whole town out of jealousy?" it wasn't the most ridiculous conclusion, but still...it was pretty wild to think someone was that petty. june wouldn't discard it though. she'd seen her fair share of crazy and petty.
it wasn't everyday that aylia was this nice. nice enough to bring someone something they had forgotten. most of the time, she would have left without doing that. but there were a few times where she had done that. and this was one of them. "not everyone around town is going to ask about what happened." she pointed out. aylia was one of them. "give it a week or two and people will move on. something will probably happen to a celebrity they like and they'll move on to talking about that." at least that's what she thought would happen. "It's fine though."
"I really hope you're right. but I doubt it'll just be forgotten." he retrieved the page, giving her a polite smile. "you know how small town gossip goes. they'll move on, but they'll be waiting for updates." and in all honesty, so was he. he needed answers. the whole thing was too crazy to just be brushed off. nobody would forget about it any time soon.
" that would be a critical mistake of theirs if that's what they believe. " they were always keeping count, always watching the status of their town, to keep it safe, secure. but something felt... different. it felt like they were evolving and maya didn't quite like that. " i'm not sure but it's worth keeping an eye on. it certainly isn't community favorite serial killer responsible. " that was also the scary part. it seemed like too much work of vampires, not the right time for werewolves. " i agree. if we let this sit, ashwick could very well become overrun with them. " she sighs, the clear disdain in her voice for the undead and those of the moon. " any ideas where to start ? "
"that is assuming we know how many people are actually here. with all these newcomers coming and going...it's hard to keep track." he leaned back, almost in defeat. he was too new at this, too...out of ideas. he still could barely wrap his head around the idea of supernatural creatures. "have you talked to elijah lately? he should be all over this." the older man always seemed to know everything, always seemed to have a plan or an answer. this time though, he was quiet. "I have my people with eyes and ears wide open. at least the ones in the know. the others are just looking out for suspicious animal activity."
Derin tossed her hair over her shoulder, "Hear about it? I saw and smelt it! So disgusting." She said with a roll of her eyes. "They really need to get on cleaning that up faster, I know there are people in this town loosing their minds over it." She said simply, she knew the vampires must be in a frenzy. "Serial killer could be exciting and fun, that if we are lucky. Animal attack is just what they will use to cover it up."
"should we like...bulk order bleach? we could use my mom's card. she can claim it as a city hall expense or whatever." it wasn't exactly the first time lucia had done that little trick. sometimes the mayor had...extra needs that the town paid for. totally nothing big that'd caught attention though. "lucky? only you would consider that lucky. I'm not equipped to fend off a serial killer. these claws aren't sharp enough." she raised her hands, showing off freshly done nails.
Riley gave a lazy shrug, "I'd be into an evil spirit taking me over." She said with a small laugh. "Imagine, they could help us take out all of our enemies and set the world on fire, sounds fun to me." Riley could get behind that. Her list of enemies was growing. "I feel like this should be, but no. I do think spirits are real, I'm not sure if they stay as ghosts or what not."
"well...I don't have enemies. that I know of, anyway." jemma had a tendency of toying with the line of love and hate, but june wouldn't consider her an enemy. that was the extent of people she had trouble with. but then again, she tended to keep to herself for the most part. "I feel like...if people truly are at peace, then they wouldn't stay, right? if they've come to terms with their death and what they left behind, then...they moved on." she was talking manly to herself rather than riley, her mind rushing back to the night of the accident.
"Pretty sure i never asked if you did." she pointed out. were there really people out there who asked that? she wasn't interested in something that literally just happened. to her, even asking about it was pointless. she had seen so many times where someone always asked what was going on when something happened. it was honestly annoying. she could only imagine how annoyed the police were when people ased that. "i was just bringing you something you left on the counter in there." she spoke as she held up the small bag.
"I--" jacob paused, staring at the small bag the woman was holding. he didn't mean to snap at her when she had done nothing. suddenly, he felt utterly ashamed of his behavior. it wasn't becoming of a sheriff, even one who hated the role. he took a deep breath, slowly raising his hand to take the back from her. "thank you. and I'm sorry. it has not been an easy few days with everything that happened."
Perhaps things were finally getting interesting, with the news of recent events whispered around town. Maybe there was an actual murderer they were dealing with. He had been on a run, considering acting human was tiring and quite dumb. Still, he followed it. It wasn't until he stopped acting like he needed a break, he paused when he heard another speak. "It was quite a statement. All that blood, no body." he raised a brow. "Are you asking because you're curious, or just filing it away as news?"
"oh I'm definitely curious. I want to make sure my ass isn't next on the chopping block." lucia spoke with determination. there was no way in hell she'd end up like one of those girls in horror movies, dying a gruesome death because they were dumb. she wanted to get to the bottom of what happened so she'd know how to avoid it. "aren't you worried?"
Theo was used to having stuff like this unfold right on his doorstep, but there was something very different about this whole mess. It was a little too clean. Which made him worried, not for his safety or anything like that, but for what it could mean for the Tavern, especially with such a strong police presence surrounding the bar, the last thing he wants if for his regulars to get spooked.
So along with what felt like half the town, he ventured out and up to the barricade that surrounded the woods, spotting the young Sheriff stood just on the other side, clearly struggling to control the crowds, but that was to be expected.
"I can see that, Sheriff." Theo sighed, as he looked around and then back at the man with the badge. "But do you mind telling your boys to park somewhere else? I'm trying to run a business here and I think all the cop cars are making my customers feel a little, put out." It was a pleasant enough request, but then again, he knew it might fall on deaf ears, as these things usually did.
it took everything in him not to shout at the scared, curious crowd. he was in way over his head and there was nothing he could do about it. it was frustrating, infuriating. he wanted to quit. but he couldn't, there was a job to be done and people depending on him.
a voice speaking to him made him turn, hands clenching at his sides. "trust me, we'd rather not be here at all." he finally let out a long sigh, stepping toward the bar so the crowd could scatter or at the very least leave him alone. "we're trying to be as quick as we can be. but as I'm sure you can imagine, our priority right now is the investigation."
Riley was trying not to think about all the blood they found but it seems like she may have been the only one. "I -uh." She stumbled over her words as she pushed her hair over her shoulder, "I don't really know." She said with a shrug, wantint to talk about anything other than the blood. She was holding on by strands to remain in control. "I'm looking for your sister actually? Do you know where she is at?"
lucia rolled her eyes as she turned to the other. "which one? my family's like cockroaches. you kick a rock, a couple dozen of us pop up." maybe that was an exaggeration. she only had two sisters. but there were plenty of cousins and distant relatives roaming around ashwick. maybe even other parts of the country.
esther had always been a little unsure about the existence of june, more-so once knowing how close in age they were and it didn't take a genius to figure out the math, but she couldn't deny the similarities that made her family. but coffee was a must so esther settled herself into the nearest chair, leaning forward to take a sip of her caramel ice latte. extra caramel, oat milk always -- some things just never changed; when june's voice pierced through her thoughts and she looked up a few moments later, realising the question had been directed at her.
she blinked at june a few times, before replying, "you know i'm older than you, right? I have lived in this town longer than you. i'd be surprised if you hadn't heard about the cult by now." hoping she didn't sound harsh, she offered june a small laugh as an afterthought. "i'm wildly surprised they're not the ones who cursed us," her words come out quiet enough just for her ears. "it sounds right up their alley. sacrifices, curses, the whole wazoo."
people often joked about the fact that the barclay girls were so close in age. there was barely any gap between esther, june and jemma. but while it was unusual, june never gave it much thought. things like that happened all the time...right? it was hard finding your individuality in such a large household, but everyone always felt a little like the odd one out. no big deal.
"only by a few months. what could you possibly have lived that I didn't?" she let out a soft laugh, a hint of humor and comfort. "only because we beat them getting here." a pause, her face suddenly serious. "do you think that's what happened? we were...cursed? like...by a witch?" the last of her words were spoken barely above a whisper, but she knew esther would be able to pick up on them.
"hear about it? I bloody stepped in it; ruined my new shoes," not that it mattered more than the peculiar sight at the woods, but esther slipped into old habits sometimes before the weight of reality set in. she hummed in thought, before shrugging. she wanted to care about it, truly. but with jem on radio silence her thoughts were always preoccupied with something else. "an animal attack would surely leave remnants. a bone or something, a roaming finger, but my personal bet is a sacrifice gone wrong from someone not in this town. people are into weird things these days."
"ew." lucia's nose scrunched up in utter disgust. "we'll have to take you shopping. preferably somewhere out of town." now wasn't the time to be thinking about shopping but lucia couldn't help herself. it was like therapy for her. "if someone really tried to do a sacrifice, then they really butchered it. it's not supposed to leave a trail like that." she paused for a breath, realizing what she said. then she tried to backtrack. "or so I've heard."
Eyebrows raise but Paxton quietly listens to the conversation, sipping his coffee, waiting for the clear so he can start working on the damaged property. Nosey bystanders kept asking questions, both to him and now this detective, it would've been funny if the situation itself wasn't so horrific.
"Anyway," He cuts in after the nosey nelly started pressing for more info. He pulls Jacobs attention, a gentle smile and a nod of the head. "I need to get into that electricity box to turn the power on for you fine folks. Can you help me with that?" He asks, nodding to the alley that was taped and guarded. "I can come back, it just sounded urgent on the phone."
his patience was at its limit. jacob wasn't cut out to be in charge. he was ready to snap at an innocent person who just wanted to know what happened. but the truth was; he didn't know. he had no answer for them. and he hated that. maya and the rest of the council needed to get ahead of this because he was losing control.
his attention was drawn to the reason he was even there in the first place. "right." he cleared his throat, giving the other a curt nod. "we should get on that before everything else is delayed." he made quick work to detach himself from the conversation, ushering the other toward the alley so that the work could be resumed. "thanks for that. I don't know how many more times I can say 'I can't tell you anything' until they understand."
Olive purses her lips, stomach turning at the thought. She hadn't seen it, she was working and when she was off she actively avoided the area. "Realistically, probably an animal attack or hit and run." She mentions, it's casual as she stops to examine some furniture in a window, wondering if it would look good in her empty room before deciding to move on. "At least from how the papers described it, that would be my guess." She shrugs, looking to Lucia. "It's sad, really."
"yeah, probably. still weird though. animals usually don't drag their prey that far to eat them. maybe we got some grizzlies visiting town again." even as she spoke, she knew it didn't sound right. she knew deep down that it involved someone supernatural. "I doubt the paper knows what they're saying. they just release whatever the mayor tells them to."
Sammy was aware of the investigation going on. The coven leader also knew to get closer to the scene, he had to get closer to the sheriff. And while having the job is great, he still has ways to go. There was a polite wave. "Sheriff it's only me. The IT Guy and temp admin while ours is on maternity leave." He said trying to jog Jacobs memory. There was a smile. "I just wanted to tell you I finally got anonymous backline fixed. Turned out to be some wires crossing with the coffee machine." He said. "Speaking of the coffee machine, I finally uncrossed the wires with the smoke alarm. Still can't microwave at the same time though or the fuse surges." He said the later a bit softer. "Two out of three isn't so bad sir." He remarked with a grin.
Smooth Sammy Smooth.
a heavy sigh escaped his lips as he rubbed the bridge of his nose with his fingertips. his job was difficult enough without all this public display of gore. "sorry. I didn't even see it was you. I've been answering questions all morning and I'm honestly fed up." he popped an eye open, glancing at the other for a moment. "right...yeah, I should get an electrician to come fix that mess. you shouldn't have to do all that."
