Oakland-based artist, Evan Holm, stopped by #SanJoseMuseumofArt last week to visit his piece “WaterTable” currently featured in the exhibition Indestructible Wonder. SJMA commissioned #EvanHolm to create a new work for the exhibition Indestructible Wonder. WaterTable (2016) is a 24-foot long table made of manzanita branches and other materials. The table is filled with water, in which the stripped-down elements of an audiotape player are partially submerged. As the piece plays recorded instrumental music, the audiotape emerges from the surface of the water, runs the length of the table, and re-submerges in a continuous loop. Meanwhile, duckweed floats on the surface of the water in currents created by the turning spools. Indestructible Wonder on view now through Sunday, January 29, 2017. Textiles in Fashion and Beyond Wed, Feb 1, 12–1 PM The exhibition Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial showcases the best in international design and includes innovative fashion by notable international designers including Mary Katrantzou, Gareth Pugh, and Giambattista Valli. Matt Gerring, instructor in the School of Fashion Merchandising, Academy of Art University, San Francisco will talk about trends in fabrics and fibers.

Art, Creativity, and the Human Mind Wed, Mar 1, 12–1 PM Art is a powerful means of expressing and organizing our creative thoughts: it has the power to soothe both artist and viewer. Over 80% of the information that enters the human brain does so via the eyes. Inspired by Your Mind, This Moment, neuroscientist Kenneth Wesson will discuss the benefits of art and contemplation.

Water: Essential to Silicon Valley's Past and Future Wed, Apr 5, 12–1 PM In SJMA's trio of exhibitions about water, artists reflect on this valued resource. Early Silicon Valley leaders also recognized that the region's prosperity depends on a reliable water supply. Marty Grimes, supervising program administrator at the Santa Clara Valley Water District, will look at the history of water supply development and the investments that will keep our water safe and reliable for future generations.

Jeanne Falk Adams on Fragile Waters Wed, May 3, 12–1 PM Our oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams are in crisis. Jeanne Falk Adams organized the exhibition Fragile Waters out of concern for these fragile ecosystems. Adams, former director of the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite National Park, will examine the work and conservation activism of Ansel Adams, Ernest Brooks II, and Dorothy Kerper Monnelly.

Hans Tan's series of porcelain vessels are meant to "invoke feelings of heritage, consumption, and materiality" -- each traditionally decorated ceramic piece is sandblasted by Tan in modern graphic patterns while simultaneously revealing the white porcelain underneath. _________

Beauty is design, design beauty? Not by a long shot

“Beauty” is the bold title of the Cooper Hewitt’s most recent design triennial, a grab bag of clothing, jewelry, home furnishings, graphics and more. There’s a page in the middle of the exhibition catalog devoted to attempts by participating designers to talk about beauty. Fashion can be truly beautiful only in relation to the sentience, the sensuality of the wearer. A scarcely there women’s teddy formed of nothing but a single sheet of folded silk gazar is a useless thing, except to veil a lover’s body. Discard the exhibition’s central thesis, such as it is, to focus not on surface elegance but conceptual clarity. Aaron Koblin, a “visual media designer,” worked with Canadian director Vincent Morisset on “Just a Reflektor” (2013), a how-did-they-do-that interactive music video for the band Arcade Fire (you can see it here: www.justareflektor.com). [...] there’s no denying the work’s catchy visual energy, and the ability to peel back pictorial layers with the touch of a finger suggests further possibilities of storytelling. Oxman is a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who is developing the idea of synthetic human organs to be worn externally, like elaborate clothing or backpacks. Channels, tubes and capillaries would be filled with engineered microorganisms bred to help us digest, breathe, stay warm and otherwise sustain ourselves in deadly environments. Oxman suggests far-off planets, but one can also imagine their use in the spoiled world we may leave to succeeding generations. Since the early days of the medium in the nineteenth century, photographers have documented the concerns and problems of the world around them. Milton Rogovin, whose work is on view in the exhibition Life and Labor, was motivated to expose the plight of the poor and working class. Ken Light, Reva and David Logan Professor of Photojournalism at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, will speak about artists who similarly have championed social causes in their art.

Lunchtime Lectures take place on the first Wednesday of the month at noon in the Charlotte Wendel Education Center. Visitors are welcome to bring food and beverages.

From the iPhone to the Tesla Model S, beauty and technology often go hand-inhand in Silicon Valley. Here, the aesthetic appeal of great design is a strategic imperative: an object’s “look and feel” provides a leading, competitive edge and can be as spectacular as the function within. Today, in fact, there are more digital and tech-product designers working in the San Francisco Bay Area than anywhere else in the world. In the exhibition Indestructible Wonder, artists explore humanity’s relationship to nature. Laura C. Rogers, president of the Environmental Humanities Project (EHP) at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, will examine the social and environmental turn in contemporary art that followed “the triumph of modernism” (to borrow art critic Hilton Kramer’s phrase) in the 1960s.

San Jose Museum of Art fall 2016 Lunchtime Lecture series begins Thursday, September 7th.

Lunchtime Lectures take place on the first Wednesday of the month at noon in the Museum’s Charlotte Wendel Education Center. Visitors are welcome to bring food and beverages or purchase their lunch at Café Too. The lectures are included with Museum admission of $10 ($8 for seniors, $6 for college students, $5 for youth 7-17, free to members).
