“How have you been faring, Lord Nicolas?” Andre asked.  The church, which held Marie’s “wedding” a few hours ago was now empty.  Marie was waiting for Andre outside, although he couldn’t pass up the opportunity of catching up with Nicolas ever since he left to become a monk after Damien’s execution 15 years ago.

“I am,” Gregory sheepishly answered, subconsiously pulling his sketch closer to himself - shielding it from a potential criticism that he wasn’t ready to hear. He’d chosen to stay in England to avoid French relatives; much harsher than he was used to. And with his own tether to anxiety, he figured it was a ‘French’ thing.

                        “You can be honest.”

He quickly noticed the way the boy brought the sketch closer to his body, and Andre blinked at the boy’s comment.  

“But....I really am being honest, monsieur. That is the truth.” Andre replied, lips turning upwards in a soft smile to ease the student’s worries.  “It really is a wonderful piece.”

Dark lashes fluttered open at the rather firm nudge on the shoulder from a stranger.  Leaning by a wall, Andre rubbed his eyes, silently cursing himself for not getting a good amount of sleep the night before.  Quickly remembering where he was (on standby to make sure that the process of the day’s execution via breaking wheel was complete), Andre quickly straightened himself.

“Ah, I’m terribly sorry, monsieur.”  Andre began, believing that it was one of the workers who awoke him. “Has the  been-”

He turned to face the person and was surprised when he saw that the person in question was clearly not one of the workers, but rather an odd-looking woman with auburn hair.  Her clothes were dark and tattered, and she had various scars on her face.

It was shameful, but he could no longer ignore the repulsion he felt towards his own life and being. He had wanted to be the last Sanson who served as the Monsieur de Paris, and to sacrifice his own life and happiness for his goal if needed, but as of lately, the young man had come to realise that his heart was easily swayed. He no longer trusted himself with this task, and so he had come to the conclusion, that leaving was the only option left to him. After a long pause, he wiped the tears from his face and spoke with a determined voice:

❝ From today on, I am no longer a Sanson. I no longer have place here. I will leave my name and this cursed occupation behind. ❞

Those words were as if a band of iron was clamped around his heart.  Shocked as he was, Andre was worried how the other Sanson family members would feel. Lord Baptiste and Lady Marthe would be extremely disappointed, and Lord Marie.....  

More importantly, if the young master were to leave, how will he survive? How would he earn money?  Scorned as they are, the Sansons at least have a roof over their heads and food on the table.  The streets are too cruel for Lord Charles’ kind heart......

“Lord Charles,” Andre started calmly, his mind made up,  “please allow me to accompany you as before, so as to assist you in your new life. If you wish to throw away the Sanson name, then.....I, Andre, shall do the same.”
