I’m going to be one of those old women who goes wherever she pleases
I suppose it might be nice to go for a swim
So I drive to the beach in whatever I’m wearing
And a swimsuit thrown into the bag I got by the sea last time I visited Mexico
My friends remind me I can’t drive and I might drown because my body is too weak to fight the currents
I’m not old yet and they’re not wrong
Do you think that matters though?
Because I’ll find a way to the ocean even if it takes me days
I’ll find my way to the sea even if it takes me away
And I’ll find my way even after to tell you the tale
After all, there’s nothing but saltwater in my veins
It pumps through this heart pulling me this way and that
I have to go now, because I know the kind of old woman I need to live up to
She revels in the water and rebels against advice
She’s a stubborn kind of animal
With wings, a woman need not drive
Feathers may fall but I’ll take flight again and again
Keeping everyone’s thoughts tucked away safe, under my wings where they can’t catch me
