This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.

I really do think that to Eridians, the most alien thing about us is our obsession with space.

Space (and stars) are a much newer concept to Erid, at least relative to us. They cannot perceive stars. They can't even see their own sky.

And then here we are, utterly obsessed. The number of songs, movies, and TV shows that reference stars, the moon, our sun, it's light, astronauts, space — we can hardly go five minutes without bringing up at least one of those things. NONE of them are things Eridians have an established affinity for; to them, they're scientific concepts, and that's pretty much it.

And yet, stars are one of the first things our kids learn how to draw. We have a specific name for the connections we trace between them, and those constellations have been built into thousands of years of our history. We fought a proxy war based on who could get to them the fastest. I absolutely believe that, to Erid, this would be our defining characteristic above and beyond anything else.

It's almost cliché. How thematically on point it must be from their perspective, that an alien from a species so in love with the stars was the one to show up and save theirs.

Probably the funniest take on Ozai is that he's a "master manipulator". Guys, this is the same man who thought asking his abusive father nicely to make him heir would actually work. He's got all the subtlety of a hammer; where do you think Zuko gets it from?

And yeah, I know someone's going to point out how Ozai manipulated his children, but like, that's the thing. They're his children. Manipulating someone who is entirely under your control and does not have enough life experience to see through your bullshit isn't very hard.

no wait think about it. kylo ren not being force sensitive, but so desperate to be so he’s willing to do anything. he feels cheated out of his grand destiny, his powers that his mother and uncle (and cousin?) have. give me the story on the entitlement towards the force. it would have shown that the force is beyond biological, it always has been. it would have given a better reason for kylo ren to “fall to the dark side”, so desperate for a connection to the force that he plays the part of a dark sider, swinging a cracking red lightsaber around with no finesse or training, killing hoping that it will push him further into a dark side of the force he cannot feel. it would have given a reason for him to hate han; that because han isn’t force sensitive, it’s his fault that kylo isn’t either. kylo’s character would have been stronger because his choices would have been his own, instead of whatever whisper dream manipulations they were in canon. his evil has nothing to do with the force, but an entitled man trying to claim a power he believes is his by birthright.

this would have foiled perfectly with finn, too- one is a child born to the most powerful force sensitives in the galaxy who cannot feel the force. and finn is a child who was taken from his family, forced into soldier-hood, who feels such a deep and powerful connection to himself and the force that he breaks free. kylo ren, seething and entitled trying to claim a destiny and power that just aren’t his, and finn, who has suffered at kylo’s actions and still connected to the powerful light inside of him. the “nobody” hero of the sequels who has the power of the force and the legacy-born villain who doesn’t.

To be quite honest with you all I do think that aro/ace-spectrum fans in fandoms where people are desperately inventing crossover ships and humanizing non-human characters in order to have a conventionally attractive guy to ship the main character with, instead of possibly having to enjoy a story with no romance in it, have the right to refer to everyone else as cowards.

We need to lay more blame for "Kids don't know how computers work" at the feet of the people responsible: Google.

Google set out about a decade ago to push their (relatively unpopular) chromebooks by supplying them below-cost to schools for students, explicitly marketing them as being easy to restrict to certain activities, and in the offing, kids have now grown up in walled gardens, on glorified tablets that are designed to monetize and restrict every movement to maximize profit for one of the biggest companies in the world.

Tech literacy didn't mysteriously vanish, it was fucking murdered for profit.

I liked what episode 31 changed about the dynamic between Hal and Bolaire.

It’s clear that they have been very close for years, with Hal’s kids even callung Bolaire “Uncle Bolaire”. This is someone Hal has trusted implicitly. Hal killed a man and put Bolaire onto an enemy to possess them. He has been unsettled – by the revelation of Bolaire’s nature and the enmity between Thjazi and Bolaire – but it didn’t fundamentally change things until now.

And it chamged things because Hal walked in to see Bolaire possessing a friend, an employee, a man for whom Hal was responsible and to whom Hal had offered sanctuary. Hal’s anger and worry in that moment were completely natural, and I think it altered how Hal saw Bolaire.

That doesn’t necessarily reflect well on Hal. Up until now, the people Bolaire was possessing were anonymous or enemies. Now that it’s a friend, the implications of Bolaire casually considering hinself entitled to do this to whomever he likes, whenever he likes hit home. And I think the fact that Bolaire is wearing Misha through the rest of the conversation strongly affects how Hal is responding to him. I think he’s starting to realize why Thjazi regarded Bolaire the way he did.

It’s not that Hal stopped seeing Bolaire as a person. It’s that, for the first time, the person Bolaire was wearing was a person to Hal.

To me as a viewer, it also further highlighted a element that’s already been shown: Bolaire is a sadist. We’ve seen it in how he taunts the people he possesses, and in his focus on spells that distort people’s minds, but in this episode we saw how easy it was for him to make it not unpleasant for his hosts to be worn, which made it stand out all the more that he has been choosing to torture them for no reason other than personal enjoyment. (It’s not yet clear to me whether being worn by Bolaire inherently kills his hosts, or if it’s because of his neglect of the bodies; either is possible.)

I find Bolaire a fascinating character, and “he’s a poor little persecuted woobie whom everyone is mean to” is the single least interesting take on him. (Or on anyone. Nothing turns me off even a character I’m enjoying faster than posts on how everyone else in the party is mean and/or neglectful of poor little them – I’ve seen it for Occtis, Azune, Julien, Wick.) I’m really hoping more of the contradictions in him get dug into in the next arc. Because it’s not fair that he, a sapient being, was created only as a weapon and created in a form that can only exist by possessing people; it’s complicated that revolutionaries seeking freedom used this means of doing so; it’s complex that Thjazi likewise blackmailed and exploited Bolaire. He’s a being who is inherently, and always, both exploiter and exploited, and within the thematic context of the story I think there’s a ton that can be done with that. (And the ideas about ‘ploughshares’ and transformations suggest that it may not be an inalterable condition…)
