‘After the Rain’ is made from 150 Rain Moth cocoons bottled in borosilicate glass, gold foil and dried lotus leaves. This piece was featured with Aesop Collins Street in 2019, for Craft Victoria’s Window Walk.

Rain Moths live their caterpillar lives tunnelling underground feeding on tree roots. In Autumn, often after a big rain, they head up toward the surface and prepare for metamorphosis. I spent days collecting these empty cocoons in South Gippsland under Black Wattle trees, such a beautiful part of the process of making this artwork.

A candlestick holder made from a washed up tree trunk and handmade solid glass spheres. I recently made a series of these, designed to ‘Decorate the Darkness’, inspired by the ancient ritual of lighting candles and placing them on a tree at the darkest time of year.

‘Overnight’ made in 2019 for a show at Gecko Studio Gallery in Fish Creek (South Gippsland). I was thinking about how sometimes things grow when you don’t expect them to, or how life can spring from death. Made with flameworked borosilicate glass and a gnarly old piece of tree root.

A bundle of ‘Sand Cocoons’ I made recently, housing 18 sand samples from 18 different beach spots on the Mornington Peninsula. Hope to seek out some new beaches soon!

Currently working on an exhibition with my dear Studio mates Kate Macindoe and Emma Morgan. So excited to be creating alongside these clever and inspiring artists! Opening next Friday night at The Nook Gallery in Mornington is our exhibition Safe Keeping. (All Welcome!)

“Safe Keeping is an exhibition by Sarah Dingwall, Kate Macindoe and Emma Morgan that explores the concept of preservation, as well as each artists' own desire to protect an object or moment. Inspired by the natural world, each artist reflects on their connections to places, memories, ideas and objects through their respective mediums.

The artists enjoy working alongside each other in their shared studio space at Commonfolk in Mornington. Together, they have valued the creative processes behind hand-making each of the artworks in this show.”

A few shots from a window display I did for Pomme in Mornington. This group of work was the result of a very inspiring winter spent looking around (sometimes frosty) coastlines near where I live. Explorin’ the Mornington Peninsula’s rugged coastline with a dear pal! This certain place makes me think of Scotland. It’s got some incredible rocks pools and cavey bits to explore, depending on what the tide is doing. Never disappointing!

A flameworked topsy-turvy pendant sitting on the window sill at the studio. Having fun with my macro lens! And I’m impressed at how this glass sphere turns the little alleyway outside my window into a tiny intriguing world.

This was a moment back in August 2014 where I found myself in a bit of woodland next to a road in Carmarthenshire, Wales. Stunning light!
