Well Hello Hello! I’m awful at updating this! But hello! I’m in Cape Town!
WOAHOHOHOHOHO Hey I forgot about this blog oops. But I’m in Italy now! Yay!
Rasnov is pretty cool!
The black sea was okay I guess
OK Now that I've had a chance to collect myself... Here's the link to my articles. They're quite literally the first 2 things you see on the page!
I'M PUBLISHED
I'M A PUBLISHED JOURNALIST I'M A PUBLISHED JOURNALIST I'M A PUBLISHED JOURNALIST OH MY GOD
These past few days have been splendid! I conducted my first interviews ever at a Eastern European Culture festival, met amazing artists, and was immersed in a world of talent and love. I also got to submit a few pieces of writing to VotW! Will post a link once they're up on the website!
Voices of the World
I’m finally starting to get involved with project #2 here in Brasov, Voices of the World! VotW is an online journalism publication, where young and aspiring journalists can write and learn more about journalism. I’ll be posting a link to whatever I manage to get published on the website! I’m very excited for this opportunity to learn not only more about journalism, but about other cultures and other peoples aspects of the world.
Wow! We went to Bran Castle! Home of the infamous Dracula, this place is crawling with secret passageways and small doors. Bram Stoker was inspired by the tales of Vlad the Impaler (or, Vlad Dracul) (see where the name comes from now?), a notorious war leader, who was known for his brutal torture methods and War strategies. Vlad was imprisoned in Bran Castle for a short 2 weeks, but these 2 weeks certainly made their mark on history. While here, I was tasked with writing detailed instructions on how to get from Brasov to Bran, and back, since everyone who comes here to volunteer wants to intern, and my editor is pretty tired of explaining the process (lol)
These past few days have been even better than the previous. My understanding of the Romanian culture deepens with every brief exchange, every purchase, everywhere. I know I still have a long way to go, but I’m feeling more comfortable and confident by the minute. A new volunteer arrived yesterday, whom lives in Germany. Her English is limited, so it’s fun to engage in a smaller scale game of charades to talk. We all met for dinner, mine is pictured above. I thoroughly enjoyed some pork, polenta, brats, and a garlic dipping sauce. To drink, we all chimed “Norog!” to a wonderful Elderflower Lemonade. It’s crisp, not too sweet, and has a light flower taste to it. After dinner, we took a walk to the back walls of old Brasov, as it was a fortress town. While we were out there, we climbed up the 150 steps to get to the White Tower, which looks over the historic district, home to a one of a kind view. Evening is absolutely the best time to be out. During the day, the sun is sweltering, so most people hide out or are working. The brisk breeze of the evening invites people outside to enjoy dinner, meet with friends and enjoy their surroundings.
When Tumblr initially marked your last post as NSFW**? Views and food is NSFW? I mean, that dinner could be food porn but COME ON TUMBLR. **nsfw stands for not safe for work, meaning there is sensitive or graphic content**

WHAT. A. DAY. My first independent day in Brasov is not one I will ever forget. I spent the morning and early afternoon touring the Black Church, shopping, and observing the historical district and it’s library. During the later part of the afternoon, I went to my office to plan with my editor and advisor, Alexandria, about my upcoming week and what assignments I can do. That night, my roommate, Dominique, and I stumbled upon a live concert in the Council Square, where bands were playing jazz music and an animation was playing. This had been the first time I was really out after 7, so it was a completely different experience. During the day, most people are either working or hiding from the heat of the day. But in the evening, tables of outdoor restaurants are filled, the atmosphere is energetic, and a true sense of community forms. Being able to be a part of that experience was special and heart warming.
First Full Day Complete!
My first day in Brasov was splendid. The Projects Abroad team on sight here in Brasov welcomed me around 10 am, then we departed for a tour around. Romanians are incredibly proud of who they are, they wear it on their sleeves. You see it in their work ethic, their cooking, their homes and in their hearts. Each region of Romania has their own dialect and their own influencers. Here in Transylvania, a very common greeting is Servus, pronounced similar to Service, but the I is a U. The literally meaning of this is "I am of your service" or "I am your slave" Americans usually get triggered when we talk about slavery, or call others slaves. But here, it is a sign of respect. When transylvanians go to other parts of Romania, say, Bucharest, for example, when they say Servus, the locals in Bucharest know that they are from Transylvania, as it is only commonly used there. Let's call it a trademark! As the sun rises from outside my window, I am getting ready to have a free day all to myself. My first assignment for my journalism project is to write my first impressions and how my views may have changed, so today will be used to tour around alone, visit popular local monuments and get a real taste of day to day life.
Arrive in Brasov: ✔️! Night 1: ✔️! Romania is much more flat than I expected it to be. Not where I am, but where I started. Fields of plowed dirt and sunflowers as far as the eye can see. As my driver, Danielo, and I crept closer and closer to the ever looming Carpathian mountains, the more the sky changed. We came from sunny, hot Bucharest, into ominous, foggy and wet Brasov. As we zig zagged through the mountain range, we passed many small picturesque towns and drove through several clouds. Brasov is gently caressed by the Carpathian Mountains, marked by their very own Hollywood sign that sits high up on Mount Tampa. For my duration in Brasov, this sign, which can be seen from all around the city, will be my guiding light, as my home is just below it. As soon as I reached my host home, I was greeted with open arms and a loving smile. My host mother, Rodica, has only been a pleasure. So far, so good!
