The Sims 4 Renovation Challenge
I’ve been inspired by the fixer upper homes I found on the gallery to create a new challenge for myself. I’ve really enjoyed playing it so I thought I would share the rules with the community so that others could enjoy the challenge too. The house and family I created for this challenge are uploaded to the gallery. OriginID: sarahkjrsten
Setting Up:
1. Create your sims in CAS. You can have as many or as few as you like. I recommend at least one adult and no children or toddlers. You can the Story feature and answer the questions with the goal of trying to get either traits or skills that will lend themselves to handiness, gardening or creativity.
2. On the gallery find a fixer upper house. The “fixer upper” tag has lots of great options. Look for houses filled with objects, clutter and overgrown plants. Or choose to download the house I created (note, my house does have some small CC items but they aren’t necessary for the challenge to work). Place the lot in one of your worlds.
3. Use the “ freerealestate on” cheat to move your sims into the house you selected.
4. Some fixer upper houses do not have the basic items your sim(s) will need to live on the lot (fridge, sink, toilet, bed etc). Use your household funds to buy the cheapest/most run-down looking options and place them into the house.
5. (If you have City Living) Set the lot traits to: Cursed and Gremlins.
Beginning the Renovation:
(Because the game “refunds” you simoleons every time you delete something, use the “money” cheat to remove any profit you make when you delete items.)
1. In order to delete or move a plant your sim will need to do one of the following: harvest a plant, fertilize a plant, weed, water, splice or take a cutting. Each single action performed by your sim allows you (the player) to move or delete on plant. If deleting a plant remember to use the “money” cheat to delete the simoleons you receive from the game.
2. In order to remove the paint/wallpaper in a remove your sim will need to create a painting. Small rooms (1-12 square tiles) require a small painting; medium rooms (12-36 square tiles) require a medium painting; large rooms (36+ square tiles) require a large painting. If you choose the sell your painting remember to use the “money” cheat to delete the simoleons you receive from the game.
3. To paint or wallpaper a room after removing the paint/wallpaper your sim will need to create a painting. Small rooms (1-12 square tiles) require a small painting; medium rooms (12-36 square tiles) require a medium painting; large rooms (36+ square tiles) require a large painting. If you choose the sell your painting remember to use the “money” cheat to delete the simoleons you receive from the game.
4. The woodworking table: Using the woodworking table your sim can renovate various items in your house. Smaller items allow you to renovate smaller things will bigger items allow your sim to tackle larger projects. As always, if you choose to sell your finished project remember to use the “money” cheat to delete the simoleons you receive from the game.
For each item you build, choose one of the options listed.
Items which cost between §5-20: Remove one crack, water stain or graffitied area; change the color of a column, stairs, section of deck railing/fencing, window or door; remove and replace the flooring in a small (1-12 square tile) room; build 5 wall sections.
Items which cost between §20-100: Remove and replace a window, door, stair, column, section of deck railing/fencing, remove and replace the flooring in a medium (12-36 square tile) room; remove two cracks, water stains or graffitied area; build 10 wall sections; replace the roof texture on one section of the roof.
Items which cost between §100-160: Remove and replace two windows, doors, stairs, columns, sections of deck railing/fencing; place or remove and replace a fireplace; remove and replace the flooring in a large (36+ square tile) room; build 15 wall sections; remove three cracks, water stains, or graffitied areas; change the roof trim on one section of the roof.
Items which cost between §160+: Remove and replace three three windows, doors columns, sections of deck railing/fencing; build 20 wall sections; add a new roof section, replace the foundation; add/remove a pool.
5. Clean and repair broken objects and piles of trash/dirty dishes as needed.
6. Earn money by getting a job, selling collectables or using the flea market festival in City Living. (note: you cannot earn money by selling paintings, items crafted via the woodworking table or by selling items that came with the house).
7. Remove undesirable lot traits: §5,000
8. Add a lot trait: §5,000
Completing the Renovation:
1. A single room is considered “finished” when you have completed the following: Removed all crack/stain or graffiti decals; replaced the wall coverings and flooring; repaired or replaced the furniture; removed and cleaned all piles of trash or dirty dishes; furnished and decorated the room according to its function.
2. Once all of the rooms (and the exterior and yard) have been completed it’s time to flip the house. Use the following scoring guide to determine the profit your sims will make on their finished project. Use the money cheat to add the simoleons they earned from the “sale” to the household funds.
§ 15,000 = Exterior (all overgrown plants removed, all cracks/stains/graffiti removed, windows and doors look nice together, there is a few areas of landscaping and some appropriate outdoor furniture).
§ 5,000 each = Bedroom(s), kitchen, living room, dining room
§ 2,500 = each additional room
The rules of this challenge suit my own personal gameplay so feel free to change or add to them as you see fit. I’d love to see what you do with this challenge and how you modify it!
Have fun!!
