Currently binge-watching: BOSS AND ME

I have been romcom obsessed this year and after browsing through kdrama lists almost every week, I think I have seen almost every romcom kdrama there is (that I’m interested in at least). So I started branching out to non-Korean Asian dramas. And my first conquest? Boss and Me!

I haven’t watched Chinese dramas in like a decade and this is a pleasant surprise. It is not amazing or anything, but it is heartfelt, low on conflict and has characters who act like real people. I really can’t get myself to like dramas with comical or silly characters. Anyway, I have only started on this drama two days ago and I’ve just finished with episode 30! I haven’t binge watched anything this fast for so long. It’s not as fast paced as mini korean dramas which are usually only 16 episodes but it is pretty engaging. I mean I did just watch 30 episodes in 3 days (2 of those are work days mind you!).

If anyone wants to suggest any similar dramas, please do! I only have 3 episodes left and I want to watch a new one immediately after! Thanks. :)

The thing about this is, you can barely see their muscles straining from effort. The effort to keep each other and themselves balanced, definitely, but that guy’s hand is barely shaking. The amount of training and strength and balance to go into this is fucking insane.

Wait seriously I don't fucking get how The Moon that Embraces the Sun became such a great hit. No solid plot. One-dimensional characters especially villains!! Very predictable ending. I probably wouldn't have finished it if not for Kim Soo-hyun and Jung Il-woo. I am so disappointed right now ugh I cant't even. I didn't even expect as much as what a 40% rating entails. I just wanted a good drama. But KSH and JIL are worth it. Or so I tell myself.

Thoughts on The Moon Embracing the Sun

This is one of those hit dramas that I pushed aside. I'm just halfway through it but here's what I think. The king obviously has psychological disorders. He clearly developed PTSD from having seen and even being one of the causes her loved one died. And then the obsession. It's been what? Eight years? He reminds me sooo much of Seong-joon from She was Pretty. What's interesting is Wol also has PTSD from being locked in that coffin eight years ago. And then she developed claustrophobia. The thing is it only affects her. But the king's disorders doesn't only affect him but also the whole country. I hate that the king's anger management issue is justified because he's the king. If this was the modern era we'd all be cursing him for treating Wol like shit just because she reminds him of Yeon-woo. But hey, he's the king. Nice covering up, drama. Come to think of it, this drama reminds me a lot of She was Pretty. This drama has a really nice soundtrack though! And it's sooo aesthetically pretty. But srsly the plot is meh. The villain is also so one-dimensional. The actors are saving this show, tbh. And the strong first episodes.

There was an anticipation in me when I waited for him. Our childhood memories which I had cherished in my heart surfaced like bubbles. 

I watched him pass by me in awe of how much he had changed from that shy boy who was my first love. His confident strides were sure, as he approached a beautiful woman with a splendid smile full of recognition.

That woman wasn’t me.

I was once pretty. He must have treasured me in his memories that way. Time had turned me into a ragged version of that girl; worn and ugly. 

Disappointment filled my heart as quickly as regret and those bubbles of hope burst. In that moment, I became the peeping girl.

SWP Thoughts

As much as I enjoyed the last episode of She Was Pretty, I can’t help but feel like something’s off. Seong-joon’s obsession over his first love is not a secret. It was directly said that he suffers from Zeigarnik Effect. But I still shipped him with Hye-jin, because he fell in love with her without knowing that she was in fact his Hye-jin. But a lot of things has been off, and I just can’t ignore them anymore.

The biggest tick off for me was when they were in the lake, and Seong-joon thought Hye-jin was missing, and he panicked. That just shouts obsessed all over. I have had a relationship with an insanely possessive boyfriend, so I know how it ends. And seeing that reaction from Seong-joon, I just know it would not end well. I don’t know how the writer will play it off, but even they are given a happy ending, I’d know deep inside my heart that they’re not going to be okay. Their relationship is not healthy, because Seong-joon isn’t.

Here are two things I tried to ignore (because ok sue me Park Seo-joon and Hwang Jung-eum are cute together idc if you say otherwise) before:

1. How Seong-joon completely ignored what happened before he knew about the real Hye-jin. He didn’t even apologize for the awful things he said and did to Hye-jin. And now he’s acting like Ha-ri never happened. I’m a present person too, but I do know that those things need to be talked about. We all know that he has a problem of only being able to concentrate on one thing, such as reading, or whatever but looking at the big picture, it’s Hye-jin. He doesn’t care about anything as long as he has Hye-jin. Remember “I won’t push you, just don’t run away.” Obsessed.

2. How he has not for one second believed that maybe, just maybe, Hye-jin (both fake and real) does not like him the way he does. He did push his way to Ha-ri. I thought before that maybe he just thought of it as being there for her like how she was there for him before. But it’s been fifteen years? He treated Ha-ri as if those fifteen years never happened. Did he even consider that maybe Hye-jin was already married? Or that she stopped talking to him for a reason? And now he’s treating Hye-jin as if those two months didn’t happen. Honestly, I loved that he saw through Hye-jin pretending he didn’t like Seong-joon. But that’s only because it’s true. I know it’s wrong of me to find fault in something he didn’t do, but I really really think that even if Hye-jin truly didn’t like Seong-joon like that, he would still be pushing his way to her.

Look, I love when a guy only has eyes for the person he loves but in this case, it’s like Seong-joon’s life depends on Hye-jin. Like he would actually die without her. Well he did survive those fifteen years. Now I wonder what happened during those times when he was already an adult. Did he survive knowing he’d get Hye-jin someday? That’s... sick. But really, if the first thing he did when he got back to Korea was to see Hye-jin, then that’s really plausible.

I read a post (here) speculating that Hye-jin will break up with Seong-joon because that’s the only way he could conquer his mental illness. And if they end up together after he gets better, then good for me. I still ship them after all. Just not like this.

I rarely have a second lead syndrome but Ha-joon’s making me waver! And maybe the fact that Yeol is not that good in showing his feelings to Yeong-doo face to face.

Cheer Up’s set is probably so much fun. I don’t know about the others, but Eun Ji and N are two of the friendliest idols. Hahaha.

This episode is really all about Hye-jin and Ha-ri and I love it. Many would argue that one could not easily forgive what Ha-ri did. Maybe. But the relationship that these two have surpassed that.. You can’t choose your family, but Hye-jin and Ha-ri, they chose to be friends. They chose to be each other’s family. It’s not that different when one forgives a boyfriend or girlfriend for cheating. I know that some might also roll their eye at that, but the point is, it happens. It happens when you love someone that much. I know that what Ha-ri did was plain wrong, but I understand why she did it.  Hye-jin did too. Ha-ri knows that she did a despicable thing. She did not give excuses. She did not even try to fight for Seong-joon, which would be stupid and hopeless. But honestly, how many second leads have done that? I can’t even count. Again, I’m not giving any excuses as to why we should forgive Ha-ri. But Hye-jin forgiving her is not uncalled for.
