Bound to Happen - Part 2

Not much time passed until Jennie saw another man, also wearing the red uniform, on the roof of the facility. Someone had had to inform the security about a dead man. They couldn’t stay inside, not worrying about anything. That would save the girls some trouble. Anyways…

Glancing down, Jennie noticed that the tall young man was motioning for people to enter. Would they already close the complex for the night ? No sensible manager would give such an order ! That would disrupt the guests !

Spotting a shiny surface from afar, Jennie immediately pulled the trigger. The man on the rooftop was to cut the rope Lisa had placed ! Another moment of inattention and their plan would have been discovered ! Jennie really had to focus !

« Thanks, Jen ! Now we’re really short on time ! » Rosé snarled, probably informed by the motion at the entrance to the Five Senses. Was it actually Jennie’s fault ? She had simply completed her task ! Which was to get rid of any disturbance. She groaned her discontent.

« How much do you think we have left ? » The black-haired girl asked, checking for any other guard. Could they destroy Cube now ? Did they have to be more careful from now on ? How many men would pass away because of her ? Jennie wasn’t sensitive on this type of detail ; it just helped in her organisation. Silence engulfed her. No one would come up for some minutes now. She was good.

« Two hours at the most, I’d say. The quicker, the better. » Such was Rosé’s answer. It made Jennie smile. The ginger girl liked speed. And rest. Jennie climbed down the stairs of the shopping mall. She had to reach as quickly as possible the top of the casino.

Mingling with the casino’s security system, Rosé had her eyes on all the cameras monitoring the facility. The easiness with which she had managed it was tingling in her neck. She had never hacked a system so quickly. As if someone hadn’t protected it. As if someone had purposely created such a simple one. As if she was being watched from the inside. Surely, any mafia boss or underboss would have ordered an implacable one, wouldn’t they ? And Cube being a rising gang, they should have thought of it.

Her eyes back on the screens, she could see some guards, the usual ones, the ones wearing a old-fashioned red uniform, stiffen in the casino itself, in the corridor ; she could see one run to the ninth floor, enter a room, checking behind him. Strangely enough, this particular room had no cameras. These were the headquarters. Park Chungmin was in there, there was no doubt.

« There are ten special units. Stay alert with them. They’re close with Chungmin-ah. » Rosé nearly fell from her seat when she heard Yang Hyunsuk’s voice in her Beats. He never interfered with the members. Especially when they were on a mission. He liked to give any hindsight after a success or a failure. He never spoke again.

Shaking herself awake, Rosé repeated his words. There were ten special men, the one closest to the boss. The one they could use to eliminate him. How could the girls differentiate them ? Concentrated on the screens, she tried to come up with any detail that may help them. Something about them had to showcase any difference. No simple man could go and see Park Chungmin. What was so special about that young man ? Biting on her lower lip, Rosé nearly shouted out of frustration when the said door opened. And two men got out of the room. One with a bag full of something. Money probably. Cube was making business tonight. Why were these guys important ? The two men shook hands before the tallest one moved to the end of the corridor, towards the staircase. The answer to her questions was right there, right in front of her. The special members wore uniforms. Old-fashioned, red uniforms. Quickly, she counted them. Two were on level 9. Two were on level 4. One was at the entrance, plus the one Jennie had killed. Scanning the casino, she also counted two men there. Where were the last two ?

« Beware of the uniformed guys. They are our main enemies. Ten of them. » Rosé said, her index finger still flying on the screens. Where were the last two men ? She whined.

« I can’t spot the last two ones ! » She commented, angry at herself.

« I took one down at the entrance. And another one on the roof. » Jennie helped in there. Where was the last guy ?

« Well done, unnie. » Lisa murmured out of nowhere, probably focused on her task.

« Be careful. There’s still one man lurking in there. » Rosé warned the girls. Could he be the one behind the CCTV system, the one she couldn’t see ?

« Card for player. Card for banker. Start. » The young girl in front of Jisoo sang in a monotonous voice. Ever since seated at this particular table, Jisoo had gathered quite a large sum of money, attracting the gazes of many men. She had hear Rosé’s message about the guards. The man at the entrance was one, like she had assumed. She could see two of the uniformed members, both with exquisite smiles on their faces. Cube had formed one good-looking gang, presumably, if she was to base her assumptions on all three men she had met. Being beautiful helped in their task, but intelligence was also useful.

Jisoo played all her cards, sweeping the victory. She was congratulated by the girl, who pushed toward her the money she had just won. Spotting an empty chair at one of the middle table, she advanced and sat on it, throwing her bet. Fortunately, one of the guard, a rather small young man, glanced up at her, seemingly satisfied. He would be her first target.

« Shall we be coupled ? » He suggested, much to the other players’ joy.

« What a wonderful idea ! » The oldest man at the table roared, pointing at another man sitting in front of him. They would be a team. Jisoo thoroughly placed her tokens on the board, fakely bored. Men loved a chase.

« Will the new lady accept to be my partner ? » Bingo ! He had fallen into her trap ! Jisoo slowly glanced at the man ; he was still smiling. She wasn’t used to dealing with handsome young men. Usually, dirty old dogs would take charge.

« If the gentleman wishes, he shall have. » Jisoo replied, pink faintly staining her cheeks. His genuine – was it genuine ? – smile stretched even more on his rosy lips. Men liked being complimented. He stopped a waiter and whispered something to his ear. Jisoo got busy with her game, the gentlemen from before already starting it.

« Jinho, come on, it’s your turn. » One man said, startling Jisoo. This man was Jinho ? Was he really ? How could she not have felt it ?! With a fake smile plastered on her face, she let the burning feeling on her right arm, under her glove, spread through her whole body. What was she supposed to do now ? Rosé’s words rang in her head. Her soulmate was her enemy. What situation was this ? Which side should she favour ?

Stopping dead when she heard noise, Lisa was on all fours in the air-conditioning systems, following pipes. Through a gap between tiles, she saw two men exit a room. One of them was carrying a heavy bag, the other nothing.

« You know what you have to do ? » The smallest of the two questioned, his hand placed on the arm of the other. He smiled and nodded.

« Don’t worry. I’ll deal with them. No price under ₩750,000 per kilogram is a bargain. » He had a funny accent, one Lisa had also. He was no Korean boy. He would certainly manage a foreign affair. Probably some drug interest. Interesting…

They shook hands and the tallest went for the exit doors. The other one took his phone out and messaged someone. When he disappeared, Lisa dared move. Where to ? The safe ? Should she follow the foreigner ? Curiosity influenced her to go after him.

« Rosé ? Information : the guy with the bag will meet some non-Korean men. Drug trafficking. » Lisa was proud of herself. Usually, it was Jisoo who gave them any piece of information. But, on that day, the tables had turned. In her favour. For long ? Rosé thanked her and, even better, ordered her to track the man. Jennie would probably deal with the safe. Securing a lock of her blond hair behind an ear, Lisa hurried to the staircase. Down. He had to go down.

« Level 3. » Rosé sighed in her ear. Why so low ? What were all these storeys between 0 and 3 ? Hotel rooms ? Would the man meet his customer in one ? Would Lisa still have access to it ?

As quietly as possible, Lisa dived down the pipes. Upon hearing voices, she stopped again. There was another uniformed man.

« They’re already waiting for you. » The stranger told his accomplice – and, unknowingly, Lisa. She listened to the two pairs of footsteps. Turning left, she took the tile out without noise. A door was closed. There they were.

« Finally… Yanan… What have you become ? » A middle-aged man spoke with the same accent as the young man, seated in a sofa, refreshments right in front of him. They began speaking in Chinese, making Lisa puff. What was the point in staying there ? She wouldn’t understand the main parts of this conversation. She rubbed her forearm, it stinging. Rolling up her sleeves, she grew pale. Why was her Mark becoming more and more visible ? And, for God’s sake, why was the countdown indicating 0 :00 :00 ? Then, it registered : she had just met her soulmate ! She checked the name she had never bothered learning. Yanan.

This is SM Entertainment. We are sorry that we have to deliver this heartbreaking news. On 18th December, Shinee member Jonghyun has suddenly left us. The deceased has been discovered unconscious in a residence in Cheongdam-dong, and was sent to the nearby, DaeHak Hospital, and passed away on the evening of 18th December.

Our sadness can’t be compared to what his beloved family, who had lost their beloved son and brother are feeling. But to all of us, shinee members, SM artistes and employees who have worked together (with Jonghyun) for a long time, we grieve for his passing with great shock and sadness.

Jonghyun was a truly great artist, and more than anyone else loved music and always gave his best to showcase his ability in performances. 

To the fans who have shown endless love to Jonghyun, our hearts ache to bring you this news.

We ask that you refrain from spreading rumors and excessive media reports so that the family members, who are in great sorrow are able to mourn for their loss.

To respect his family’s wishes, a funeral will be held as privately as possible, with his family members, close friends and co-workers.

Once again, we send our deep condolences as we send Jonghyun on his final journey.

Stopping at the corner of a building, Jisoo looked back at the SUV that had given her a lift. Although she couldn’t see the driver because of the tainted windows, she knew Rosé was giving her the look, urging her to go on with her mission. Rosé was the one supervising everything. Lisa and Jennie had left them ten minutes before her.

Jisoo rearranged her long white gloves, the one hiding the Mark. The Mark consisted of a name and a countdown to the Meeting. The Meeting which would take place between her and her soulmate, a certain Jinho.

« Go on, unnie. We have no time to lose. » Rosé’s voice chirped in her ear. Instinctively, Jisoo reached to her earrings. Shaking herself awake, she walked past the corner and discovered the Five Senses, a 10-floor complex grouping a refined restaurant, a five-star hotel, and a casino. And Jisoo was going for the casino.

Clutching her purse tighter than usual, Jisoo floated in her shoes to the entrance, which was becoming less crowded. She recognised some men she had had business with, as well as one which was supposed to be dead. Gang people had their ways.

With a flicker of her eyes, Jisoo sported her unreadable face, the one people mistook for a blank one. The red-clothed guards, she noticed, were extremely tall, and not buffy at all. Were they real bodyguards ? Or spies placed there to ease their job ?

Shrugging, Jisoo entered the complex, golden, beaded. She tried to take in as much information as possible : the number of waiters, players – solely girls her age, guests. Cocktails were served, music was blasting from invisible speakers, coats were taken care of. She slightly bowed to a man who took hers. Her champagne flute in her gloved hand, she wandered here and there, fakely interested by some games already begun. The entire facility was the property of Park Chungmin, who had inherited it from an old relation.

And Jisoo, with her three friends, had to dismantle it.

Rosé was checking on Lisa. She was the youngest, and had suffered from her previous mission back in Thailand. The blond girl had nearly gotten caught by a young man with pearl-white hair. Rosé was sure that the girl knew him. Her silences once back in Korea had driven her membres crazy. Only once, they had suspected her of crying, or sniffling, during a night. The girl was tough. Their boss, Yang Hyunsuk, had ordered them to have some rest, though the young girls had stated they didn’t need one.

Rosé changed screens. She was seated in the only SUV they had at their disposal. For the moment. The boss had promised them better equipment if they succeeded in obliterating the gang known as Cube. They would get it done. Nothing and no one would interfere.

« This is way too easy ! Boss should buy us food tonight ! » Jennie laughed from afar. Rosé could still hear the traffic in her earplug, which meant she was on the road. What was taking her so long ?

« I’ll buy you pizza if you live through it. » Rosé sarcastically replied, pressing on her Beats connected to the huge computer.

« Deal. Let’s hope Jisoo won’t be too long. » Rolling her eyes to the ceiling of the car, Rosé had a look at the external CCTVs placed right at the entrance of the imposing building. Two guards… Men… Women… Jisoo… Everything was under control.

« Ready. » Merely a whisper, Lisa’s voice helped Rosé focus on her task. Her fingers kept dancing on the keyboard.

Lisa was wandering through a school. How in the world could a school be built next to a casino ? Indeed, the pupils never actually encountered the mafia members, but still… Had the mayor been bribed ? Why didn’t the parents complain ? Were gang children placed there for a purpose ?

Flicking on some lockers, the young girl climbed stairs to the rooftop. She loved them, be it in Thailand or in South Korea. She could always feel a sensation of freedom. Even in such a circumstance.

Childishly, Lisa pinched herself to remember where she was, and for what purpose. She couldn’t make the same mistake twice, she won’t let that happen. She had imagined Bambam was still her friend, when all he did was betray her. And, because of her, the mission had failed. The word tasted inexquisitely in her mouth.

As far from the street as she could, Lisa crouched down and took a rope out of her bag she immediately put back on. She walked to the edge of the roof, her thumb grazing the red button.

« Ready. » Lisa informed Rosé. As of now, she only had two minutes and a half to break into the complex from the top. And leave some help for Jennie who would use the same equipment.

Checking her watch, Lisa pressed the button twenty-one seconds after having spoken to her member. She let one end of the rope suck on the opposite wall, the other on her belt. With a light jump, she was flying onto the complex. Silently, invisible in the dark of the night. Glued to the wall, she waited for five seconds before moving upwards. In no time, she unplugged the rope from her belt and dived onto the floor to the air system. She would use it as a map to the Pentagon Room. Where the safe was said to be.

In the parking lot of a shopping mall, Jennie pressed the button calling for the lift. Whistling a tune that had been stuck in her head for some time now, she played with her rings, large, silver ones. She had volunteered for this precise mission.

A smirk on her lips, Jennie huffed, frustrated by the wait for the lift. Was it out of order ? To her relief, the green doors opened. Nobody. Her tongue licking her lips, she typed down the top floor. Unfortunately for her, people came in and went away at every floor. Groups of friends, chatting about the latest music video some artist had just released, families planning their upcoming holidays out of town, businessmen managing phone calls from foreign investers. None of them interested Jennie. Yet, all of them threw her strange looks. She was wearing black clothes from head to toe, never seen before boots with heels that would make even the tallest girl jealous, and was carrying a gigantic backpack which didn’t seem that heavy.

Jennie sighed when the last couple exited at the last but one floor, the one with the fancy restaurants. Deep inside, she wished she had a boyfriend. Jisoo, Rosé and Lisa were fun and her bestfriends, but they weren’t guys. They weren’t her soulmate. When would she finally see Wooseok ? Where was he hiding ?

Jennie’s head snapped up when she realised she was at her destination. Sending the lift back to the parking lot, she advanced in the cool night. The stars were blinking in the cloudless sky, the moon was casting some light. This was a perfect weather to get caught red-handed. But Jennie was an expert. She won’t fail this night.

Placing her bag on the floor, Jennie opened it and assembled the long range weapon. Glimpsing over to the casino, she spotted two guards. She had to take one down. Which one ? She got a coin out of her jacket.

« Heads, left. Tails, right. » Jennie agreed, flipping the coin. Tails. Licking her lips, she aimed at the young man, a bit smaller than his accomplice. Through her lense, she saw him scan the passing cars. And she pulled the trigger.

Down at the entrance to the Five Senses, Wooseok flinched when he heard a thud. Glancing at Yuto, he saw his friend lying on the ground. His eyes raking the streets from left to right, he muttered :

« Hyung, someone wants us dead. »

Amelia looked one last time at the piece of paper she had in her hand, the piece of paper Kenna, the girl she had been talking to this morning while drinking coffee, had given her. It had some directions to Room 99. Amelia had told the girl about her incapacity to find the dreaded number; Kenna had been quick to help her.

So, there she was, outside the Dorm, her back to its door. Kenna had already left,. Amelia followed the instructions, walking by the many doors she had seen the previous evening. Where had she gone wrong? What turn had she missed? Right. Left. Second left. And indeed, there it was, Room 99. Why hadn’t she seen it the day before? Whatever.

Placing her hand on the knob, Amelia swapped her flashcard. A green light surrounded the pad. Then, it turned red. She didn’t have the courage to open it. She was afraid of who was behind that door. Would she actually see a young man like on the screen, or another box with another girl in it? Looking left and right, she tried to remember what door she had hazardously opened. It was all hazy, had all been done in haste.

A knock on the door woke her from her thoughts. A knock from inside. As if the person was asking for permission to leave. Inhaling, she swapped her flashcard again. The door opened itself. A young man appeared, not that tall, with sharp traits. Surprised flashed in his eyes. A frown followed suit. He was disappointed in seeing her. Everybody was, Amelia thought. She entered and closed the door for him not to escape. To trap him. And herself.

“Who are you?” He began, still, his eyes on her. Shouldn’t she be the one asking him questions?

“Where are the guys?” He went on when she remained silent. So, he remembered about the other men... But what did he actually remember?

“Who are you?” Amelia retorted in such a calm voice that it ticked her off. She had to get to know him. She understood why he was being cautious with her. She would have acted in the same way in his shoes.

“Don’t you know who I am?” That was sarcastic. Amelia grimaced; she hated when people made fun of her.

“Let’s assume I know nothing about you. Will you tell me anything?” She stepped closer to him; he stepped back, wary.

“Tell me where the guys are... Then, we’ll discuss.” Hope surged through her heart.

“Next door. All of you are in separate rooms. I know nothing else. I haven’t met them.” She babbled on, unconsciously spilling evidence that must have been secret, too happy to think properly. Amelia just breached the contract she had signed upon entering the building.

On the other side of the building, Kenna was inspecting her folder for the last time. Her memories swirled in front of her eyes: the face of the boy, the smile. That smile. She had even dreamt of it that night! And those eyes... Things were getting out of hand from the beginning. She hadn’t told that to Amelia. The two of them had shared any experience, Kenna more than Amelia, actually. Would the man be different from the day before? Would he recognise her?

A guard passed next to her. It was the first time she saw one. It didn’t scare her, nor reassure her. He was simply doing his job, like she should be doing hers. She tapped on the number on the door and entered. He was still her. He was sitting on his bed, legs hanging loose on one side. He was clearly bored.

“Oh! It’s you again!” There was some rustling; the bed moved when he got off. Kenna stilled in the doorframe, not expecting him to be so... welcoming. He stopped himself too. He walked back to his bed and resumed his position. Kenna didn’t understand his reaction. What had she done for him to do so?

Awkwardly, she stepped inside the room, her feet leading her to the wall in front of him. She showed him her folder. Empty.

“I need some information about you to complete this.” Kenna said, stressfully clicking on her pen. He allowed his gaze to meet hers, making her involuntarily blush as soon as his lips spread into a large smile.

“Can we play a game?” The question startled the girl, whose hands let the folder fall to the ground. He laughed at her. He was surely a weird man.

“Tell me your name.” She commanded, her pen ready. Mischief played in the boy’s chocolate orbs. What was he up to?

“I’ll give you mine if you tell me yours.” He shrieked, his hands groping the edge of his bed, lolling on it. Kenna had to be careful. His behaviour reminded her of mentally disturbed patients.

“I’m Kenna. I’m working with you. Only you.” She noticed that his eyes followed her lips. When she finished, they shot up to her own ones.

“My name’s Baekhyun. You’ve been the only one visiting me ever since I woke up.” She scribbled down his name on the paper. The second part didn’t surprise her at all. Who else would enter this room?

“Do you remember anything from your previous life?” She went on, not wanting to break the moment; he wouldn’t be that talkative forever. The boy shook his head, eyes closed.

“Nothing?” Her shoulders slumped, as she lost hope. She only had his name. He repeated the word.

“We’ll work on that. Tomorrow, I’ll come back.” She informed him, closing the folder. There was no use forcing him to reveal information he didn’t have. She walked along the wall to the door.

“You will?” Baekhyun muttered, his hopes too high for a Subject. Kenna nodded, trying to smile. But she never managed.

What was it? What was the spell? Or the incantation? Margot was sure she had been able to create something with her hands before being brought there. She remembered meeting other girls. She remembered exercising with them. Exercising some powers. And now, she was alone in a glass box. In a shock-free glass box. She had of course tried again and again to punch it, crack it. To no avail, at all. Whining, she plumped to the floor. Why was she alone? Where were the other girls? Although it was pitch-dark, her childhood habit of drawing with her finger on any surface came back. And with it the unconscious hopeless singing. It was her only way to comfort herself.

Sarang knocked twice and the door swished to her right. Her boss finished his call before looking up at her. She had her usual blank face, a defensive technic she had sported ever since she had enlisted some years before. Would her sister be similar to her?

“Since the Maze experiment wasn’t that much of a success, we have decided to go on with the female Subjects. They just brought in the last coffins.” The man announced, getting up from the armchair he had been sitting in.

Silence and darkness welcomed them in the corridor. No one sound escaped the Dorm, nor the rooms inhabited by the boys, nor the ones by the girls. No wonder for it was only four in the morning. Their feet swirled on the white tiles as they walked to the room. The man bipped his flashcard.

“Tell me once again how many of them there are.” Sarang repeated all over again the number of girls (eleven), their respective powers (the same as the boys, apart from time travel), the level of dangerousness (ranging from casual to highly dangerous). The man was leading her to a special box, one which hadn’t yet been unsealed.

“This is Subject 16. She will control time travel. The Scouting Team stated she was ready for any use. We’ll wait one week before they prepare the Maze. Then, we’ll send them in, one by one. Like we did with the boys. And, you’ll be managing their journey to and fro.” Sarang nodded while the man circle the box. He entered a code only he knew; the seal came off, unveiling Sarang’s younger sister, Kaeyon.

Right before leaving the Dorm, Rebecca saw two of the nurses chatting in the kitchen booth, drinking coffee. It was appreciated that some of them were sharing any type of information, or anything to just create a better place of this building. The night had been quiet, but Rebecca had felt some of the girls getting tense. She herself hadn’t been able to close her eyes much, her thoughts lingering onto her patient. She hoped today would bring some answers, he would be awake. She had some questions to ask him. Opening the door to his room, she stilled once she saw he was sitting on his bed, sheets loose on his body. He also looked like he had had a rough night. Plus, he was tightly holding onto his arm, onto his wounded arm. Fortunately, Rebecca has left the previous day the first-aid kit, which was still under the boy’s bed. He winced and massaged his wrist, tugging on the gauze.

“Let me do it!” She offered, putting her badge back into her pocket, crouching to get the kit and opening it on the sheets, just where the boy’s legs were spread.

“You did this to me.” The young man’s said, in a toneless voice, which surprised you. You else could have? That Sarang woman? She didn’t care about them! She even called them ‘Subjects’! When they were Patients!

“Yes. I patched the best I could your wrist. The bones aren’t broken. It’s just a sprain.” She explained, rolling his sleeves to better examine his member.

“No. You did this to me.” He pointed at his wrist, tapping on it, groaning from pain. “You made that creature appear in the Maze and I had no other choice than to twist my arm to get out of its claws.” He accused, grimacing when she was unwrapping the gauze. Rebecca didn’t stop her moves, like she had upon entering, but couldn’t help her tongue from moisturizing her lips. So he thought she was working with them? With that institution? She was but she had just begun her work! And what had happened in the Maze? What menacing creature had been sent there? Why had these boys been sent there?

“It’s not me. It’s my second day here.” She applied some gel on his hand, wrist and forearm, trying to be as gentle as she could. She could feel his gaze on her face, though her eyes were fixed on his hand and long fingers. He remained silent the whole time she cured him. Rebecca pushed the kit under his bed. With one last look, she left the room. She had forgotten about her habits as a doctor: she should have asked him his name.

Why had Sarang injected something in Subject Number 88?  Sunny couldn’t figure out why. Why to him solely? The girl had an impression that he was different from the other ones. Why so?

Scratching the top of her head, she entered the room. She felt uneasy in it. As if the Subject knew someone was coming in. How could he sense the presence of anyone if he was sleeping? There he was, lying his bed, in the same position as the one Sunny had seen him on the television. Anyways, she was there to gather information about him. Any information.

Sunny walked here and there in the room, her eyes locked on the body, in case he were to move.

“What to do?” She moaned, bored. She inspected the face of the young man, his blond strands of hair hiding parts of it.

“What can you tell me?” She asked him, though she knew he wouldn’t answer her.

Sunny was about to turn around and leave when she felt a grip on her wrist. He was holding her! Quite firmly! Frightened, she looked at his face, his black emotionless eyes piercing through her. Her body reacted first: she was shaking her arm, the folder attacking him wherever it could. Snatching her hand away from him, she escaped from him, not sure why he had reacted in such a way. What a stressful first encounter!

Kenna was the last one to visit her Subject. She had been watching the girls come and go, trying to understand who these boys were, what had been the girls’ reactions upon meeting them. No face gave away any emotion on their return. It looked like she would be alone on this.

Grabbing her folder lying on her bedsheets, Kenna got up and walked past Rebecca who was cooking some soup in the kitchen booth hidden by a giant wall. She turned left and right two times in a row. Pacing the corridors, she found out her Subject’s room, the one on the corner. What was she going to discover? What was she supposed to discover?

Opening the door, Kenna silently entered and spotted what she had been looking for: the bed and the man. She stopped dead when she noticed that the man’s eyes were open. Was he awake? He didn’t move. She didn’t move. Kenna felt her breath itch in her chest. What now? How should she react? ‘As usual’, her mind told her.

Gulping down, Kenna approached the man, before being startled by him sitting up on his bed. No word echoed. Her chest was hurting way too much from lack of air. The smile on the young man’s lips was the reason. One that would haunt her forever. The most welcoming one she had seen in her entire life.

Half an hour after receiving the reports about the six subjects, Sarang joined the nurses in their Dorm. Each was doing a different activity, it being writing, reading or daydreaming. She had been pleased with the reports, more than she thought she would. The girls were professionals, and there was no denying it. This team would work out the therapy of the nine young men. She had been the one who had selected the six girls. Although there were more Subjects than doctors, things were, for the moment at least, going on well. No incident had surfaced in the reports. Sarang knew that all the truth would not be written down in the folders. That the girls were hiding from her pieces of information, as much as she was keeping a secret the most important one from them: the nature of the group members.

Sarang looked at Sunny. She had to deal with the potentially most dangerous of them all. Subject Number 88 would need more treatment than the others.

“I have some remarks to make regarding your work.” She addressed the girls, who all turned to face her.

“I have been informed that some of you are getting too concerned. Let me remind you that these are Subjects, and that you only need to watch over them. Nothing more.” Sarang stated, her face blank. Being impartial was crucial to their work. She had to hammer it again and again for them to understand. For them not to reproduce the same exact error she had done in the Maze. None of the nurses blushed though some were the direct recipients of these words.

“You are being watched 24/7. Never forget it.” Sarang had whispered, her head hung low, as if it were a secret. It wasn’t, of course, yet her own boss, the man in the yellow suit, shouldn’t be informed about this warming.

Sarang walked to Sunny and handed her a flask containing a green solution.

“This is an addition to what you should administer to Subject Number 88. For at least, the first three days.” Sunny nodded and took the flask she shook in front of her eyes. The others didn’t need it. They weren’t as unpredictable as he was.

Why in the world had Morgan been appointed nurse to the ‘most predictable’ Subject, as Sarang had called him? Wasn’t she worthy of dealing with someone potentially more interesting? Morgan was more than willing to study any case.

She flipped her badge and let the door open. She walked to the bed, on which the man was sleeping. No folder was attached to it. What meant no further information. How were they to work if no one gave them the tools to do so? What could have happened to Subject Number 10 in the Maze? How could he have behaved predictably? Why was he there in the first place?

Morgan felt the man stir in his sleep. She made no sound, no movement. What would she do if he was to wake up? Never opening his eyes, the boy fell back into sleep. She exhaled, quite satisfied. She came closer to him, to his face. Who was he? What was his name? Did he remember it? Had he any memory of his previous life? She cleared his forehead from strands of brown hair. He was a handsome man. No man she had ever seen compared to him. What was she suddenly thinking about? She had to take care of him. And she would. Out of duty. Out of infatuation?

Amelia scratched the top of her head. She was lost. Completely lost. She was supposed to go to Room 99, but had no idea where this one was. The last number she had seen had been 96. Ever since, she had been erring here and there, seeking that forsaken white room.

Puffing and huffing, she backtracked. Looking at her watch, she noticed it was already past 9pm. Her boss would want that goddamn report in less than an hour! And she couldn’t let her down on her very first day! She was a professional girl. She would do it.

Going for luck, she opened the nearest door, praying it would be the one. Nothing moved. Was anyone there? She looked for a switch on the wall. She hit it. A faint glow lit the room, discovering large boxes, all aligned. What was their purpose? A rumbling sound could be heard from the back of the room, as if a motor was working.

Amelia stumbled on pipes, nearly crashing to the floor. She had a feeling it wasn’t the room she had been looking for. She had a feeling she wasn’t allowed in, like a burglar in a house.

She walked to the boxes. Water was in there, fizzy water. She placed a hand on the glass and glued her nose to see more clearly what was floating in it. If anything was indeed floating inside. A face appeared. Large eyes, an open mouth. A hand stuck to the glass, no sound. What was it? Who was it? How in the world was that thing, or that person, living in there?

Amelia knew it wasn’t Subject Number 99. She had seen a girl. And her mission revolved around a boy. Who was she? Why was she hiding in that room? Who had placed her there? Could Sarang answer her questions? Were there any other girls in the remaining boxes?

Gulping down, Amelia tore herself from the glass. She had to leave. Before anyone noticed anything about her absence. She had to forget. It wasn’t her business what the organisation was doing with these people.

Where was Subject Number 99?

Leyla looked as the girl disappeared from the room, letting it fall again in the dark. How lucky she had been to have had some visit! Yet, she had expected a delegation, not a single person. And from what she could figure out, this girl had been very much shocked upon seeing her. Could she be the key to her liberation? Would she see her again? Would she spend her life in that box for eternity?

Whimpering from the prospect, the girl curled up, her tears mixing with the water she could breathe in. Because she had been deemed fit after the operation, she was now living miserably in a liquid.

Once dressed in the uniform consisting of a white top, a dress of the same colour, and shockingly red stockings she had found in the bag left for her, Rebecca grabbed her folder and a pen she hid in the front pocket of her top, and left the Dorm. The Dorm was the room furnished with about ten beds and as many tables and chairs. It was supposed to be the Resting Room for the staff working in the building, for the nurses. Sarang, being their boss, had her own private office.

The young woman followed the map she had found on her bed, a map of the intricate corridors leading to so many rooms that it was too easy to get lost. Scanning the numbers of the rooms left and right, she arrived in front of the one she was looking for. Room 61. Her patient was in there. Was he sleeping like the one she had seen on the TV?

She fished out of her pocket a badge, which was to be used with care. It opened nearly any room in the building, on the ground floor. Her fingers tingled at the sensation of her seeing the man for the first time. A bip was heard upon opening the door. No sound came from inside. Was he awake? Was he asleep? Was he alive?

She tugged on the handle and entered. The boy lying on the bed wasn’t moving. At least, he was on the bed. The white tiles were the only ornament on the floor and walls. Rebecca approached the man. She could see his chest heave with every breath he was taking. He was alive, and asleep. She let her fingers linger on his clothes, on his arms, his long body. She hadn’t studied medicine to look after a grown-up man; but to heal and cure humanity. Feeling an unusual bump, she unbuttoned his sleeve and discovered a sprained wrist. Without thinking twice, she fled to look for a first-aid kit.

Nari whined when she figured out she wouldn’t be able to have a look inside the appointed room because she was not possessing the magical key to open it. She had already spent a good 15 minutes wandering in the corridors to find Room 94. There was no logic at all in the numerating of the rooms, ranging from 01 to 99. There she was, in an empty corridor, in front of a white door, a door identical to the ones next to it, to all the doors in the building in fact. What could she do? How could she check that her brother was indeed in there, or wasn’t at all? She still hoped he was alive. She knew he was alive. He had to be alive! None of the other nurses had talked much. None of them could help. Apart from going back to the Dorm, what could she possibly do?

Turning her head left and right, she blushed at the idea that had just popped up in her mind. She jumped on the spot to try and see something, anything, in the room. Nari had always been one of the smallest anywhere she went, and her height didn’t help her in that situation either. She stomped the floor out of frustration. Life was unfair!

Looking up at the small window, she gasped when she caught glance, for a brief moment, of them. Eyes. Black as coal. Emotionless. The eyes of Subject Number 94.

Sarang opened the door to a dark room, the one next to the empty alley. She switched on the lights, them flickering for a moment. Three bodies covered by white cloth were waiting near the other door, the one leading to the freezer. Sighing, she walked to the beds, unveiling one. A young boy was laying there, dark circles appearing under his eyes. Taking the folder that was attached to the bed, she completed it. Subject Number 68. ‘Dead’.

She moved onto the next bed. She wrote the same word for Subject Number 77.

She looked for a long time at the last body. Her own hand didn’t want to discover the next face. She wasn’t ready for it. She knew who was under that cloth. She had seen him die in the Maze. She had let him die in there. With a shaky hand, she uncovered the handsome face of a young man, his pearly-white hair stained with blood and dirt.

“I’m sorry, Yifan.” She whispered, scribbling ‘Dead’ once again on the folder, next to the case ‘Maze’. Biting into her lips for no tear to trail down her cheeks, she placed the cloth back on the face of the man and left. Indeed, Yifan, Luhan and Zitao hadn’t survived the Maze. The nine other had.

“There’s no need for me to remind you that these Subjects are highly dangerous.” The man in a yellow suit told them, his voice as monotonous as the one belonging to a history teacher. ‘Patients’, Rebecca corrected, looking at the door through which the man had entered. People, whatever their state of mind, were patients and not subjects. And, in what ways were these persons dangerous? What threat could they present to the doctors? Rebecca had signed such a long contract, stipulating secrecy about themselves, and what they were to see or hear during their stay. And, it didn’t seem like she was the only one. Some other nurses, surgeons, psychologists were seated in that white room.

“They have confirmed our worst fears : they can become uncontrollable. The Special Unit is transferring them from the Maze to their individual rooms.” What had happened in the Maze? What did the man mean by ‘uncontrollable’? Had they overdone the expectations set by the doctors? Sunny was sceptical about the new pieces of information. This building was seemingly a prison and not a hospital. What was going on there?

“You will be working under Miss Sarang. She’s known the Subjects for some time now.” A television screeched and blurred images appeared. A woman was injecting some solution to a young blond man’s forearm. If they were the Subjects, they didn’t look at all like what Amelia had imagined. They seemed innocent, soundlessly sleeping on their beds. Their faces made one think of them as students – if we were to erase the blood stains and scratches. She shrugged, turning left to watch the man exit the room; and the woman enter. She was wearing a white uniform composed of a top and a skirt. A simplistic attire. She drew to her a drawer from which she took folders.

“You will have to deal with one Subject each. You will only focus on him. I want reports every evening sent to my office by 10pm.” Kenna huffed. She had applied to that job because she had been apparently misbehaving at the medical centre.

Sarang was giving away the folders to each of the six girls. Morgan got hers and opened it. Empty, apart from a number. 10.

“Won’t we get anything more? Maybe their names? Their health reports? The reason why they are here?” She started, her hands open, a bit lost. Sarang looked at her, blank. Morgan could have sworn that the woman’s lips had twitched.

“They don’t have any names. They’re Subjects. You’re lucky, you got Number 10. The most predictable of them all.” Sarang patted Morgan on the shoulder. Curiosity shook Nari awake. With shaking hands, she opened her folder. Number 94. Was it Baekhyun’s secret number? Would she be able to find her brother? And save him? Ever since she had lost his track, she had had sleepless nights. By some lucky event, she had heard of him being there, in that strange building. She had trained so hard to get back in touch with him, to get him back home. Right after he had been kidnapped in front of her eyes. And had disappeared forever.

“You better change into your uniforms.” Sarang showed them pure white ones waiting for them in a wardrobe. Identical to her own. She walked to the back door she opened with a screech.

“I’ll be waiting for your reports.” The woman said, leaving. The six girls looked at each other. Rebecca was the first to move to the wardrobe.

“Well... Shall we cooperate? It seems to me as if they all have common points, these... boys.” Kenna tried, still sitting near the wall. Some of the girls stopped in their tracks. Morgan followed Rebecca to the wardrobe and grabbed a colourless bag.

“Let’s first gather some information, then we’ll speak about any type of collaboration.” Amelia chirped, writing something – already - in her folder. Sunny nodded; Nari agreed, jumping off her chair and decidedly walking towards the exit.

Love Stories at Hogwarts: Starting over for the sake of pride

Kris followed the female Gryffindor Chaser – Liyeon – with his eyes as she dodged the Ravenclaw Keeper and scored. Shouts erupted from the Gryffindor side while Ravenclaws cried and lashed onto their Keeper. Slytherins remained cold-faced, this victory unphasing them.

“Here we have another 10 points for Gryffindor! They’re leading 80 to 40!” Joonmyeon commented from the booth reserved to the teachers. Chasers in red or blue followed each other, bumped into each other ; Beaters sent Bludgers into the players and the audience. A general gasp was heard when Jongin dived towards the Gryffindor hoops, pushing away a Ravenclaw Chaser. He must have seen the Snitch. Kris kept his eyes on the Chasers. He preferred analysing their game play than focus on the Seeker. Yugyeom got the Quaffle ripped off his hands, managed to avoid a Bludger sent by Jackson.

“That’s 90 to 40 for Gryffindor! The game isn’t over yet. What is it? Kim Jongin! Kim Jongin got the Snitch! This is a win for Gryffindor! Congratulations, guys! Ravenclaw put up a strong fight. You’ll do better during the next match! Thank you for attending the game! We’ll see you soon !” Joonmyeon’s soft voice concluded, under the noisy screams coming from Gryffindors.

Kris pushed some first years away, his long legs separating him quickly from the crowd. Gryffindors had played well, indeed. The seventh year young Captain was however seeing through Jaebum’s strategy. And he would decide on a back-up plan for their future battle on the field.

“Ravenclaws should really focus more on their defense. That’s their main default.” Tao said in a sigh. He had run from the field to catch up with his leader. Sehun was right behind him.

“They better not so that we can crush them.” He laughed, climbing up the few stairs to the Great Hall.

“Jongin spotted the Snitch very lately.” Mark spat, his black robes hanging off his left shoulder.

“Maybe he wanted his team to accumulate more points before actually showing he had seen it.” Kris defended, his face not showing any interest in the conversation whatsoever. Mark cocked his head to the right, unconvinced.

“Yes! With this win, we managed to overcome Ravenclaw. We’re second!” Jungkook chirped, his Hufflepuff friends Hoseok, Jimin and Taehyung happily clapping for him. Kris had one look at the four hourglasses, one for each House. Indeed, Gryffindor were second, right behind Slytherin.

“Don’t get your spirits too high. It won’t be long before your House drops to the last place!” Junghee said, looking over some third years. She was in Slytherin and had befriended Mark, the only girl to have managed such an achievement. But the biggest one had been her being a couple with Kris. How had she managed to capture the Slytherin Prefect and Quidditch Captain? They had broken up right after the beginning of the school year. Hoseok looked at her, with a smug on his face.

“Why, you jealous?” Hoseok dared retort to her, protecting his friends. Hufflepuff’s lotalty was no joke. Namjoon arrived, startled by the ruckus. He eyed the Slytherins as well as the first years gathered to see some confrontation between older students, which they always found entertaining.

“Don’t you insult me!” Junghee had her wand out in no time and was threatening the older student with it. Slytherins aimed at being the best. At Hogwarts or outwards.

“Casting spells is forbidden outside of classes.” Namjoon reminded her, stepping in front of her, his tall figure hiding the younger children.

“Really? And that’s coming from a Ravenclaw?! The people who practise their spells anywhere they can!” She snarled at him, her fingers tingling on her wand.

“That’s coming from a Prefect.” He showed her his badge to attest of his position. “I advise you to go back to your common room.” Namjoon went on, his gaze never dropping off Junghee’s face. “And, Kris Wu, you shouldn’t let such accidents happen.” Not a muscle budged on the tall boy’s face. He simply turned around and followed Tao and Sehun, pushing away small kids.

“Mudbloods!” Mark whispered, his arm clutched by Junghee’s hand.

“You should have hexed him.” Kris told the girl, walking right beside her. She raised an eyebrow, not sure of his intentions. They walked down the stairs to the dungeons.

“A Prefect such as yourself shouldn’t encourage violence.” Junghee dropped, her eyes on her wand she still had in her hand. She should have cursed Kim Namjoon and his four friends.

“It would have been practising, not violence.” Kris claimed, stepping closer to her. What was he wanting by acting so suddenly? She still had strong feelings for him, there was no denying that. But would he be willing to begin anew with her?

“And, Junghee, you are sexy when you cast spells.” He confessed in a low-dropping voice, his big mesmerizing eyes on her. He leant in to kiss her but was met with the back of her hand.

“Promise me you’ll crush your opponent during the next match.” She still couldn’t take the offense that Ravenclaw Prefect had done her. Kris’s eyes smiled and he pecked her lips, much to her surprise.

“I promise.”
