You feminists are getting the wrong idea. The majority of elementary school teachers are women… is that sexist towards men? Of course not. Women simply like to teach children, and men do not. With the movies, women are typically not as interested in a film career as men. It’s not because of sexism.
Yes, women are not treated as equals to men. But don’t use these facts to support your cause. That’s the same as saying “Our society is sexist because all football players are men”.

Yes, let’s ignore the fact that most teachers are women because most men who would like to go into the field don’t because of shitty pay, less prestige, and long work hours. Or ignore the fact that most film schools (like the one I went to) are hostile environments for women. It is not that women are less interested in film but they are actively discouraged to not pursue that field both by not seeing other role models or women in television and movies but also because Hollywood is the most sexist place on earth and works on a buddy system of who knows who which women have a tough time breaking through.
This shit burns me up.
sooo many think pieces about the statistics in the film industry and other male-centric industries (*cough* programming *cough*) ignore the hostile work environment issue altogether. It’s super frustrating.
My Favorite Picture of You, by Martin + Lindsay, is a short film that demonstrates the importance of looking back on our journeys. Reflection can deepen our connection to our stories, as well as those around us, and even the forgotten moments can bring us great joy. Dan Lindsay states, “That’s what makes a good documentary film: constant surprise, discovery, and revelation. Discovery is one of the most important tenants in storytelling.”
Plot: A man tries for years to get his movie off the ground, the only thing standing in his way is himself.
Review: American Movie is a sort of tragedy to me. To others, this just seems like a movie about a guy who wants to make his own film but he can’t stop getting in his own way. He drinks too much, has no real vision and no training. This comes off as funny more than not but man I’ve seen this so much. I’ve worked for this guy and it’s not as funny when you’re there for real. Filmmaking demands a lot of sacrifice and to see someone who says that he is wiling to make that sacrifice while refusing to do so in practice is a bit lame, a bit square and a bit sad.
The only thing I really like about it was the director’s friend, Mike Schank. He has such a positive, real attitude that it’s hard not to love him. He’s just always smiling and great. The director, Mark Borchardt, despite his faults, is at least a genuine guy. He realizes his faults and tries to be there for his friends and the best part of the movie is the relationship between the two.
Trivia: Mark Borchardt is supposedly directing a new movie.

‘Please Vote for Me’ - an excellent 2007 documentary that follows three eight-year-olds as they compete to win the highly coveted position of class monitor, in one of their school’s first democratic elections.
It’s easy to view this Wuhan-based primary school as a microcosm of China and the film as a metaphor for greater changes afoot in the country. This impression is reinforced when watching the kids grapple with concepts and processes they do not quite yet understand, but also by the ending. While the school has introduced a democratic process, the status quo is ultimately preserved.
On a more fundamental level, it’s fascinating to watch the lengths these kids will go to win, from bullying to slandering opponents to scheming to bribery. I remember seeing the same kind of tactics employed at school during primary school elections. It’s this universally human aspect of the film that makes it such an insightful viewing experience.

For any and all going through major anxieties with school ending and graduation looming, or even just the fears of every day comforts coming to an end because you’re growing older and turning over in to different things and coming up on different parts of your life; I highly suggest you watch this film. It’s a short film- I think you’ll really enjoy it.
