I recently rewatched Brooklyn Nine-Nine for the 2294830th time with some friends of mine, and I always always say how much I despise seasons 7 and 8. There are good episodes and moments, dont get me wrong, but there is a clear shift in direction and the characters are very out of place, so here are the top five things I would change about B99 seasons 7/ 8 (and a little bit of season 6), this will include spoilers ofc.
Absolutely terrible name, Amy would never have allowed Jake to name their son after Die Hard. Nope. Are you trying to tell me she didnt have a binder full of baby names by the time she was 12? Come on. Which brings me onto my second point
Jake and Amy debate around children
The whole structured debate around whether they have kids or not made no sense. Again, there is no way Amy would have planned her future with Jake and NOT be on the same page about their future. And especially having a debate?? So if Amy wins they just have kids?? Even though Jake doesn't want to? And if Jake wins, Amy just gives up her want for having children? And it was resolved so fast... yes, its a sitcom, but if my partner said they wanted children after saying they almost never saw kids in their future, I'd be suspicious theyre only just saying that to stay with me. I think an alternative to this argument would be WHEN theyre having kids. Jake wanting to wait, Amy wanting to start trying in 6 months time or so and the same principle surrounding the whole water park but instead of "do you want this?" Its "when are we going to do this?" I do respect the hilarity of Holt being the mediator on the debate though.
Now I cannot comment on Rosa's experience of police brutality and her decision to leave the force because of it as I am white and will not experience the world in which people of colour do and there are voices far better to be heard than mine on this matter. What I will talk about is that the writers had no plan for her outside of her leaving the force. They made her a private investigator, which is very fitting and works well, and honestly I think that could've been a nice way to incorporate Pimento back into the series and possibly them working together, romantically involved or not it'd be cute! Anyways, the fact she is a PI, a member of the public now, a civilian, not a police officer anymore, and yet she still always ended up working with the police in a "morally gray" way as she accessed police files, which, does reinforce the corrupt police system they had displayed, but it cant help but bother me that they (the writers) decided to fight corruption with corruption. Rosa left the force for her own morals and yet they made her help with police cases, access their files, just in general be still heavily Involved with the police and it was normalised? Furthermore, they did nothing with her character and made her struggle for money, anxiety and again, involve herself in the system she strongly stood against. It felt like the writers went "yippee we addressed this major societal problem... now we can just toss Rosa aside and focus on other matters"
I really wish him and Genevieve got to adopt more children. His character development after adopting Nikolaj was the sweetest and I thought about how adorable it would be if he started making Latvian cuisine or done a podcast or some a food blog relating to it. He's such a creative person with so many weird and wonderful hobbies that were never really touched upon. Just imagine a lil cookbook for kids of Latvian food and its designed by Niko, Genevieve and Charles. Charles makes the recipes, and Genevieve does the art !! The whole "not really a Boyle" thing bothered me as well. It felt like a poorly structured episode and implied that blood = family. Now, dont get me wrong I would need a lot of time to process that I was not biologically related to family, but... Charles adopted a child who is not biologically his and to have an arc witb Charles assuming his entire identity was around being a Boyle when he has a literal adopted child from Latvia seemed odd. However, it could have been so great if this opened an opportunity for Charles to really educate himself on what it is like for adopted children and how to embrace their culture and the caregiver's. Charles is an ally, and I would have loved more opportunities for him to show he's one
That is all for now but I have so much more thoughts, by all means share your own or critique mine. This is all an opinion and I still love this show. It is because I love it that I am taking time to critique it ❤️
