sarastro ( here: from 'saros' and 'astro' ) ; the saros period is the time that passes between two identical eclipses. it is 18 years 11 days and 8 hours long. one saros period after an eclipse, the sun, earth and moon return to approximately a near straight line, and a nearly identical eclipse will occur in what is referred to as an eclipse cycle.

“ magic is just energy, my dear. ” sarastro would huff, audibly, at such a question, as though rejecting a scandalous imputation with indignation. but he shall not blame an amateur for the common misconception, at the very least. surely it must be a misconception, bred from innocent curiosity. surely she would not dare accuse a man of such a thing. “ it has no shape or intention by itself. it's what you make of it. ” he clarifies further.

a brow is raised then in a display of his own curiosity. a strange joy settles on his face, sparkling in his pale eye. “ why ? interested in such a thing ? ”

Also, this is not the only way to utilize these herbs (as many of the sachets could be replaced with dream/sleep pillows), these are just the way I would use them in my own practice. This is not a comprehensive list and I welcome others adding to it should they want to!

Elain’s smile of wonder drops at his response, turning into a slight pout. Her brows knit in confusion. Sarastro had been dismissive. She is nearly certain of it. But the rest of it lands so very differently, as though he had set out to offend her only to change his mind mid-thought. Or perhaps simply thinking aloud, taking her along for the journey; only to arrive at a conclusion she cannot help but agree with: what good would knowing a plant’s latin name be, if one does not know how to cherish what they grow?

Elain may agree with him, but if Sarastro will not claim the insult, she will decide it had cost him his former point. 

His question draws her forward slightly, and Elain’s smile returns, earnest and completely unguarded. “ Well, at present — for pleasure, mostly. ” Her own answer gives her pause. She had grown nothing truly useful, not for all those years of trying. Even when her younger sister hunted to keep them fed, her garden had given back beauty first, medicine second. The books her mother had left were a different kind of useless altogether: how to arrange flowers for a suitor, how to press them into letters.

“ Though I have been meaning to learn, you see — I found a book in my sister’s private library. The Healer’s Grimoire: Herbal Remedies of Prythian. Have you heard of it? I can read most of it well enough — it is only the latin names I still struggle to pronounce. ─── I haven’t quite decided how to tell my sisters I’d like to start experimenting. ”

power sleeps in her, undoubtedly. any being sensitive enough to spot such bright aurae would agree, such energies that remain unseen to the eyes of those not blessed with magic. elain's is quiet, yet vibrating. her connection to the earth goes far beyond a youthful passion. the wizard can feel her connection to the ground beneath them, her energy reaching from the sapplings' roots to the tips of their leaves. sarastro does not possess such a gift. he can not feel the herbs or flowers. he has but an artificial power over them, weak and controlling and unhealthy. but he could never be jealous of a child like her. his gift lies in feeling out people. his own magic extends its blackened vines into their core, into their brain to study it, memorise its shape and perhaps one day make it his own. but such will not be necessary.

this optimistic soul is interested in the pretty things that grow beneath them. and, to his surprise, also a book. so she reads, after all . . .

“ mmh yes, it is a helpful guide. extensive, structured. ” he nods in approval. sarastro, throughout his many years, has read most of what has ever been published on herbology. and despite finding little joy in the practice of healing, he values the elaborate process of creating a remedy. it is perhaps the hardest to master, right after blood magic. he clasps his hands behind his back. “ which chapter would you like to start experimenting with ? ”

“ the flowers in my garden bloom— ” it sounds a like a plea that he sends after the departing maiden. don't go. his own tone surprises him. but sarastro isn't as ashamed as he ought to be. there is a fascination with the forest dweller that he can not shake. surely she'll prefer the blooming gardens that surround his home to the dead forest that surrounds them. “ perhaps you'd like to see them. ”

“ my help will take care of the rest. much appreciated. ” corner of his mouth quirks upwards. there is an unusual warmth to the resident's demeanor. with a guiding motion of sarastro's hand the vase lifts itself off the ground and settles down in the other's arms again. “ you're a brave man, ” he muses, without commenting on the display of magic or leaving the other a moment to digest it. one can hear as much about the wizard sarastro. instead he continues on his path down the hallway, deeper into the manor's interior. it is both messy and yet somehow orderly. filled with all manner of things few people could name, and even less would know how to use. but it is, above all, never unorganized. its owner could, at all times and without difficulty, find any single thing if he were looking for it.

despite no longer looking at the florist, he makes it clear that he means for the other man to follow him into the dining hall that is revealed at the end of the black and purple corridor. “ travelling miles to a secluded place you've never been to before, all on your own. ” there is amusement in his voice, but nothing malicious. the dining table is set festively already and the sound of more rattling cutlery can be heard from the other room. a black cat sits on a nearby lounging chair.

darkness fills the spaces of the mind mage's mind. in some corners it sparkles with the friction of thoughts, like a nebula lit by the sun. others are pitch black and shrivelled, laid to rest over the course of his too many years. his sympathy might have once laid in those corners. sarastro pouts, moving his head slowly to the side in not-quite-convincing dismissal.

nature's bride seems to have found him, not leaving him in peace. she's approached him like other creatures of the forest have before, only it is of her own will. his magic has not touched a hair on her. on the contrary, he's allowed her charm into the dead nature that surrounds his home. where she walks the withered grass of his forest comes to life again. now her presence must have tainted even the once dried out tree he's leaned against. when he'd gone to sleep, it did not yet carry petals.

“ the sun. forces her light through my eyelids when i try to sleep. ” honest enough. he finds he doesn't mind being honest with the fox creature, yet doesn't quite know why. he turns his head to her. a mirthless smile, a brow quirks. he watches her reaction. “ i detest her. ”

𝑻𝑯𝑬𝑹𝑬 𝑰𝑺 𝑵𝑶 𝑺𝑶𝑳𝑰𝑫 𝑩𝑨𝑹𝑹𝑰𝑬𝑹 𝑩𝑬𝑻𝑾𝑬𝑬𝑵 𝑾𝑶𝑹𝑳𝑫𝑺. The veil, as it is, cannot be felt or sensed at the edge of the Archival Realm, the shift from one to the other so subtle that only the most perceptive may notice it at all. And yet, there is the odor of old magics across the river, powerful and strange.

Indeed, one need not even scent the magic to know the differences. Where the wizard's realm is grey and dying to the unlearned eye, the archivist's is flourishing, green as summer and heady as the roses climbing the walls of her palace some distance away.

"Ugly, you call it?" she echoes, perplexed but unmoving. "Curious. One might be surprised to hear how readily you insult that which is and is not yourself." She's familiar with such concepts herself, made up of the magic that governs the Archival Realm. The palace and its surrounding forests are as much a part of Ruby as her many claw-tipped hands.

“ i am old. ” it's a simple fact the wizard does not bother hiding from the likes of her. and unlike humans with their narrow understanding of the realms beyond their own, surely the spider has already sensed that there is something unnatural about him. of the many things sarastro tries to conceal, this isn't one.

“ with time, all living things wither. visibly or not. ” a contradiction, it would seem, to the world of the fae. they are a fickle people. and yet pride themselves on staying ever youthful, ever powerful and ever wise. something akin to humor twinkles in his eye. his smile lacks any accompanying warmth. “ your side of the river looks just. lovely. ” he wants to dig his fingers into it, extract its core and study its peculiarities. “ but something always withers. ”
