Stop Motion Animation inspired by Dragon Age: Origins
This is the first time I've ever made something like this, but this is for a project in my major. I could've executed it better, but honestly, as someone who is more of a digital artist than a traditional one, I think I did well...?
It was a fun process, but given enough time, I definitely could have done it better. And I'm actually considering making more but digitally!
Anyways, I just wanted to share this because this is my first finished work for Dragon Age ( ╹▽╹ ) ♡
also the last post made me realize i haven't shared the bulk of my arlathan cultural headcanons
i actually have a doc with a big list of things which i'll include, but first i will specify that, at its heart, i view arlathan as a artificially organic structure. much like the evanuris!
they are immortal, as are the elvhen. death does not touch them. very possibly disease does not, either, and certainly not rot. their bodies are built, designed, artificial yet entirely real, spirits now with blood pumping in their veins, with a heartbeat, with breath, with the feeling of cold or warm air on their skin...
because of all this, i think there is a cultural fascination with the organic, the biological, and those particular parts of it that they have no access to - death, disease, and rot. and very importantly, i see none of this as being grim or disturbing, either to the evanuris or the elvhen. it might eventually become disturbing to the elvhen as slavery begins or escalates, as slaves are "spent" in the creation of things, but it is not something that immortal beings have an inherent or instinctual aversion to. there is instead a deep academic fascination with anatomy, with death, with biology, with organic compositions
(btw, as with all my headcanon stuff, u have full permission to take this and run with it without crediting me!!!! u don't even NEED permission i don't feel, but i am explicitly giving it)
also i'm not a big pinterest user in general but working through my ideas for arlathan, it did help a lot. just bugs me that there is sm inevitable theft on that site... :/ but, nonetheless, i will include the link to my pinterest board for arlathan, with the BIG IMPORTANT NOTE!!! that a lot of it is explicitly anatomical, some with violent connotations, and that it might be disturbing. with that in mind... link

perfectly round ponds, outlined with dense and perfect planting, always in bloom, an artifice of nature
winding staircases which provide glorious views
vines winding through railings, but never dropping leaves or dead flowers
buildings arranged to take advantage of light, where certain times of day create elaborate patterns of filtered light
surreal beauty
colors like an oil slick
curves everywhere, the predominant shape is of curves and circles
everything is so high... tall towers, and great, open structures where u can stare up and see all the floors above
a fascination with death, disease, rot - these things that do not touch the evanuris or the elvhen
skeletal depictions
huge, beautiful murals that show skeletons and rot but are surrounded by this almost ethereal beauty, all gold and gilt and vivid unreal colors that flow together so that every single piece is a piece of art unto itself
an entire building could be a skeleton. a ribcage making up the main room, its arms supporting each side, almost cradling the structure
anyway i really do think arlathan should be..... ecologically and ethically and artistically and magically Insane. wdym there's these immortal, pretentious, amoral tyrants, with the ability to literally morph life itself to their own desires? and it just looks sepia and a bit foggy? CRINGE!! boring!! it should be beautiful and horrible!!
they evanuris can spend a thousand years just getting artisans to tile the floor of their palace with a mosaic, and then use magic to make it move or glow or react to people's presence - this might require a few blood sacrifices, but that's ok. after all, this art will last for thousands of years, so a small sacrifice is nothing in comparison.
they could selectively breed an entire forest into having blossoms on the trees that match their eye colour, just to look cute while going on walks there. what was the forest like before-? doesn't matter, it's better now!
they could domesticate a species of beetle, just to make it cling to their dress and add a cool iridescent shine and beading effect. is it now an invasive species that's becoming a hazard? maybe, but that's ok, ghilan'nain will make a new type of bird of paradise to hunt it, and everything will be ok <3
they could quite literally turn people into infrastructure - do you want public transit? well, you now have a... very strong beast of burden, provided by the genius inventor ghilan'nain, that has the capability to pull a bus-sized cart. and also has unsettlingly intelligent eyes, and an aura of despair, while being extremely punctual. gladiatorial coliseums as entertainment? oh boy. if condemned criminals are fighting to the death in there... may as well be interesting? give them some cool flashy features that emphasize the drama! andruil wants to hunt something new? well, now there's a creature that's sapient, feels fear, and can make plans enough to be a challenge, and has whatever assortment of traits she wants to test her weapons on that day - and even has a cool colourful pelt to keep as a souvenir later.
might be more real than you think because I’ve wrote a six page google doc draft thing about the events and companion reactions and general little details that won’t mean anything to anyone else but me. Eyes and ears open.
This shit is run like her totally not failing underground menzoberanzan ( that’s deffo not how it’s spelt) campaign because now she’s seen as a gods herald (which if that isn’t just a paladin anyway let’s Go) and her big scary bhaalspawn form wife is there because I said so and I’m having so much fun I LOVE WRITING
See my biggest issue is that there are so many different possibilities and like creative directions that I can take the fake very not real people in my head that I spent a majority of time thinking about these fake very not real characters and then I make things for them and the next day the cycle repeats. I am never free and I am never consistent
