I do not like Obito’s thoughts in here. I cannot exactly describe it, but to me the line ‘Kakashi won’t get in our way’ sounds like Obito wants to spend time with Rin alone and he still hopes he’ll get together with Rin on the other side, and he doesn’t want Kakashi to get in their way. Remember, Obito knows that Rin loved Kakashi, so maybe he’s afraid if Kakashi would join them then Rin’s eyes would be on Kakashi. I don’t know maybe I’m reading this line wrong. Maybe, Kishimoto meant something different by it, but it stills feels wrong to me.

I, however, like this:

I can accept this reason for Obito not wanting Kakashi to go with him on the other side or when Kakashi remembered how Obito saved Kakashi on the Kannabi Bridge mission. It’s basically about a person saving their friend.

The other thing that I didn’t like how Rin went easy on Obito on the other side.

I know it would be ooc for Rin to get mad at Obito, but at least she should get disappointed in him. After all he didn’t respect her choice of sacrificing her life to save Konoha. In addition, he attacked the said village no long after. I understand Obito was in a dark place back then and he was just ‘I don’t care anymore about it’ and Rin who must see it, understand it as well, so that why she said, ‘You got lost on the way, didn’t you?’ But still people who Rin cared about got hurt and killed because of Obito’s actions, and I think at least for this reason Rin shouldn’t be so easily forgiving towards him. Also, the line, ‘You always did your best’ sounds wrong to me, because no, Obito didn’t always do his best.

I liked, however, how Rin was happy that Obito and Kakashi became friends. Despite her feelings towards Kakashi, she was always supportive towards Obito and wanted him and Kakashi be friends.

I dislike Obito and Rin as a pairing, but as friends, I love them.

I also want to add that I’m one of the people who liked Obito’s storyline. I think many fans disliked it, because for them it was ‘A guy loses his mind over a little crush’, but for me it was more. In canon, i.e. manga, we saw Obito had only two people who supported him: Rin and Minato. We know his parents died when he was a little, and I’m guessing the Uchiha clan didn’t really acknowledge Obito, most likely because he wasn’t a talented ninja as they would expect someone from the Uchiha clan. Naruto said to Obito in 653 file ‘I’m watching you’, “The way we grew up is similar… you too wanted someone acknowledge you and praise”. So, based on this I can conclude that that Obito didn’t have many people to acknowledge him. Rin and Minato seemed to be the only one and Obito met Rin before Minato plus Obito had a special feelings towards Rin.

I disagree with Obito’s actions after Rin’s death, but I can understand why he acted the way he did. The girl who was his ‘only the ray of light’, the girl who always supported him, believed in him and was there for him died. Rin was everything for Obito. She was his hope. So, I’m not surprised that after losing Rin he saw the world as ‘pitch black hell’.

Obito hated also the reality, because people like Kakashi and Minato who he saw as heroes had failed. Kakashi couldn’t keep his promise about protecting Rin and he lived a life of regrets, and Minato wasn’t there to prevent the tragedy. Obito wanted to live in a dream world where Rin was alive, Kakashi didn’t need to feel guilty and make ‘pitful excuses in front of graves’ and Minato would always be there for his students.

Before Obito saw Rin’s death, Madara had fed up him with his ideology about how the reality is hell and how he can create the world full of good things. Obito thought why he needed to live in a reality full of suffering when he could live in a world free of pain.

What if Madara wasn’t there. Let’s say, Obito didn’t ‘die’ on the Kannabi Bridge mission, and he together with Kakashi and Rin continued to go on missions. However, Mist (without Madara’s influence) would kidnap Rin and make her into jinchuuriki and despite Kakashi’s and Obito’s best efforts, Rin still dies the same way she died in canon. What would Obito do then since he wouldn’t know that the possibility of the dream world exists. I personally have two headcanons he either would leave the village in similar way to Tsunade and he would wander aimlessly. Kakashi probably would join him or he and Kakashi would join Anbu. Obito still could turn into a criminal, I don’t exclude that option.

There were some things that I disliked in Obito’s storyline, but overall I liked it.

P.s. I wasn’t quite sure how I should tagged this post. In the end, I decided not to tag this as anti post (I only used anti for Obito and Rin pairing), because even though I said some negative stuff about Obito and Rin as well, I guess, I still said some positive stuff about them as well. Besides, the negative stuff aren’t that bad, in my opinion.

[Theory] Why I think Sasuke is not quite aware of Karin's feelings for him - yet -

I believe it’s not an understatement to say that most of the naruto fandom tends to assume Sasuke knows about Karin’s feelings for him (or at least the majority I’ve come across), and I definitely understand why that is. Since Karin’s feelings are so obvious to us as readers, one tends to assume Sasuke can see through her rough exterior, too. I did the same thing myself for years - until I actually stopped to seriously think about it some time during my Naruto-fandom hiatus two years ago.

Really, does Sasuke actually know?

I’m in the camp that thinks odds are he is not aware of her feelings for him. At least not entirely. I believe that even if he does have at least an inkling about Karin’s feelings, he is for the most part clueless about the fact that Karin is in love with him. My reasons for thinking as such are as follows:

The ways in which the manga itself seems to suggest Sasuke’s cluelessness.

Kishi and his writer style. To put it simply: at this point of the story, given that Karin’s feelings for Sasuke have yet to be directly addressed, Sasuke being either completely clueless or at least not entirely aware makes for a more impactful revelation, imo.

I’ll use this post to properly explain my perspective on both ends (because people have asked me why I feel this way before, so having a post ready to be linked seems more useful haha). But I’ll also address two other things that in theory should hinder this train of thought:

Sasuke has been present in two of the times wherein Karin’s feelings for him have been directly alluded to.

Sasuke was Mr. Popular back in Konoha. Shouldn’t he know, by experience alone, when a girl is interested in him?

To do so, I’ll gather some of the things I’ve posted in the FC concerning this subject, but I’ll also write a few extra things to (hopefully - as always -) tie everything together. Granted though, this is just my personal take on the matter! Even those who are also on the same boat as me and believe Sasuke’s probably not aware yet may have different reasons to do so, haha.

Those who know me have probably seen me say that I’m over the never-ending pairing wank that goes down in this fandom, but if there’s one misconception that still irks me after all these years, it’s this one.

For years I’ve seen people say that: “there’s no way I can ship SasuKarin, it’s basically the same thing as SasuSaku or even worse. Liking it while disliking SasuSaku is hypocritical.”

And I just,

SasuSaku and SasuKarin are not the same. Their similarities are purely circumstantial (having feelings for him, being the female on his team, nearly dying by his hand) but when it comes to their roots and their substance; to their dynamics, to the things that makes each one of these two couples what they are—they are fundamentally different.

I realize that there’s no point in saying that without explaining my reasons for thinking as such, so here I’ll try to explain what (to me) are some of the biggest differences between them. However, please note that it is just my personal opinion (I’m sure we all find these two couples different for, well, different reasons), and it’ll most likely turn out to be a long post because I’ve been holding myself back from addressing this misconception for nearly 4 years now orz

But before I get started on my perspective, there’s something that I need to address from the get-go. A truth that I’ve seen being overlooked or outright denied way too often. That is: Sasuke cares about both of them (and I say ‘cares’ because we all know that despite what might have gone down / may still go down from now on, by the end of the manga, Sasuke will have mended his bonds with those dear to him. Kishi is predictable like that, lol).

And both of these girls qualify in that very, very reduced ‘precious people’ list. When it comes to Sakura, Sasuke basically outright admits that he considers Team 7 as his precious people in Chapter 133. When it comes to Karin there are no words to accompany it, sure, but Sasuke still demonstrates it fairly clearly through his actions. I’ve been over that a thousand times already, so rather than repeating myself I’ll just say that one only needs to look at his expressions when he thought he would lose her to know he considers her as such as well.

So, what is it that makes me feel that it’s perfectly valid and not hypocritical in the slightest to strongly advocate for SasuKarin, while having SasuSaku as my most disliked couple in the series?

I’ll break it into four parts:

● 1. SasuSaku and SasuKarin: An Overview. → SasuSaku → SasuKarin ● Each girls’ behavior around Sasuke. → Sakura → Karin ● Their respective dynamic with Sasuke. → a) Team 7 and Team Taka → b) ‘Darksuke’: aka, the Kage Summit fiasco → c) Sasuke’s behavior towards Sakura and Karin ● Kishi’s themes and as such, his writing intent.

How come Suigetsu is so well-versed in SasuKarin? [ramblings]

And I’m leaving Kishi’s writer intent aside for a second here to solely focus on Suigetsu as a character. Because, I mean, Orochimaru being well-aware of Karin’s feelings for Sasuke was no surprise because what doesn’t Oro know? Plus, she worked for him; if there are two people who often got to watch Karin interacting with Sasuke, those two would logically be Oro and Kabuto. So their comments were expected and not any kind of surprise:

But then there is Suigetsu.

I’ve always thought that it made more sense if Suigetsu’s unfinished sentence in 352 was alluding to Karin having been in love with Sasuke for a while now rather than to Sasuke and Karin’s first encounter. But given that the majority of the japanese readers I’ve spoken to seem to be in agreement about the latter, and given this neat little detail, I’m starting to believe they’re probably right.

Which brings me to the question I still can’twrap my head around even after all these years: how in the world could Suigetsu know about that? We’re seriously missing something here. Or rather, Kishi must be saving something quite interesting for later.

I’ve rambled about this so many times in the FC that I’m already starting to sound like a broken record, but this intrigues me so, so much that I just had to vent somewhere. Please bear with me guys orz this is going to turn out to be a post of the all-instances-of-Suigetsu-bringing-up-and-taking-jabs-at-SasuKarin kind, I can feel it.

Sasuke's smiles

Leaving my absolute love for the Sasuke/Naruto teamwork this chapter and for Sasuke’s expression in that last panel, I must confess that being the shipper that I am, I also loved the timing of this chapter for a SasuKarin related reason.

Just a couple of days ago, I was surprised when I came across a couple of people claiming that rather than smiling at Karin, Sasuke had “smirked” at her. Or at most, given her a “soft smirk”.

Given that Sasuke’s expression this chapter is canonically pointed out to be a smile and his lips were drawn nearly identical to 482, I guess the “Sasuke was just smirking at Karin” just got debunked.

Not to mention that, while his lips were drawn the same way (what differs is the angle), there is a difference between Sasuke’s expression in this chapter (which, again, Kishi did point out to be a smile) and the expression he gave to Karin in 482:

As Ina-chanz put in in the FC, the difference “is all in the eyes”. Or more specifically, his eyebrows. One gives his smile a self-satisfied (and totally Sasukeish) feel; the other softens it for his eyebrows are relaxed rather than furrowed.

So ironically, the one who at least made a distinction and called Sasuke’s gesture for Karin “soft” was proven to be right on the money this chapter, haha.

According to some, apparently Sasuke saving Karin in Chapter 415 was due to Team 7 & it wasn't even a new power

Believe me, I know how it sounds, haha. If you’re of the opinion that claims like those are not really worth debunking, I’m actually with you 100%. But given how often this one gets thrown around (I’ve seen it a lot), after a member of the FC brought it up today I offered to write something regarding it for the FC’s Misconceptions section (though I guess this doesn’t even qualify as a misconception, but let’s pretend it does!).

So, copy-paste-no-jutsu incoming:

Did Sasuke managing to extinguish the Amaterasu flames in 415 have anything to do with Team 7?

I believe those who claim it did probably are just mixing up the order of the events; whether unknowingly or deliberately.

Fact is, Sasuke’s flashback to Team 7 takes place in Chapter 414:

Not in Chapter 415. (Being the Taka fan that I am, I also can’t help but to point out that he remembers them because of Taka. Seeing how far Taka were willing to go for him moves Sasuke and it is due to this that he remembers Team 7. I’m addressing this here because most of the people I’ve seen using this argument also tend to completely disregard or downplay Taka’s importance in this scene, and I believe it’s time to start giving credit when credit is due. Because this has been the only time thorough Part II where Sasuke has been explicitly shown to remember Team 7 in a good, positive note. And it was due to Taka. This scene was meant to show that both teams are important to him. Please, there should be no reason to dismiss either).

As a matter of fact, Team 7 are not shown nor alluded to in the entirety of Chapter 415. So while they were related to Sasuke’s use of Amaterasu, they have nothing to do with Sasuke extinguishing the black flames.

And the same thing happens to apply to Taka. While Sasuke’s feelings for the team as a whole were related to Sasuke using the Amaterasu, his feelings for the team as a whole were not what made him gain access to the power able to extinguish those flames.

By staying to save Karin, Sasuke is essentially opposing the Team because Juugo is explicitly shown trying to pull him away. In other words: this is not something Sasuke is doing for the team as a whole.

Moreover, by refusing to listen to reason, Sasuke is not only putting his own life at risk, but Suigetsu's and Juugo’s too:

While his Amaterasu in 414 was an effort made for and born out of his feelings for the Team as a whole (hence why his flashback to Team 7 took place there), Sasuke’s efforts in Chapter 415 - right from the get-go - are shown to be for one person and one person only:

And this is explicitly shown to be the case when it comes to Sasuke accessing the power able to extinguish the Amaterasu flames.

Let’s break it down:

He is facing her:

Then we focus on his right eye. First he turns on his Sharigan (his eyes were back to normal after he used the Amaterasu and stayed that way until this very moment). Then his right Sharingan shifts into his Mangekyo:

He calls Karin’s name in his mind, which leaves no room for doubt about she being the target of his focus:

We then see just what kind of expression he is making as he calls her name in his mind:

And then the flames begin to recede and ultimately disappear:

Something that even takes Sasuke himself by surprise:

I won’t go into the meaning of Sasuke actually awakening a new power for her because I’ve already been over that that’s beyond the point. The nature of Sasuke’s feelings for Karin is also besides the point; it’s up to everyone to perceive them as they see fit, there is no correct response as far as this goes imo.

My only point is: throughout the duration of Sasuke managing to put out the Amaterasu flames for the first time, there is no reference made to anything nor anyone other than Karin. Once Karin is in danger, the one thing we canonically see going through Sasuke’s mind is: Karin! and this is consistent with the amount of focus he pays to her and her peril.

So if you come across anyone wanting to argue that Sasuke saving Karin was about anyone other than Karin herself, the burden of proof lies entirely upon their shoulders.

ALSO, another thing that usually accompanies this claim is that Sasuke’s new power was Amaterasu and not him handling its flames at his will.

Which is yet another proof that the people saying this haven’t bothered to re-read the chapters since they came out. If they had, they would know that:

a) Sasuke using Amaterasu is the focus of 414 not 415. Moreover: Sasuke already showed that he had Amaterasu back in chapter 397. In other words: Sasuke already knew Itachi had equipped him with Amaterasu. We already knew Sasuke had Amaterasu. As such: it was not a new power at all.

b) The very title of Chapter 415 (415. Not 414) is “A New Power!!” for a reason.

The only jutsu Sasuke uses throughout the chapter is bending the Amaterasu flames to his will (in this case, making them recede).

c) As mentioned above:Sasuke himself is repeatedly shown being surprised by said power.

A surprise he does not show when he uses Amaterasu, which again proves that having Amaterasu was not any news nor to him, nor to the reader.

And just in case anybody had any doubts left, the raw is even more conclusive:

c) Sasuke does not say: “Is this what the Mangekyo Sharingan is capable of?” He outright wonders if “Is that the power of THIS Mangekyo!?” (“それがこの万華鏡の動力なのか!?”)

And on cue, he then proceeds to use THAT POWER again but on Killerbee:

So the only NEW power that Sasuke got throughout the fight was indeed the one he awakened not for Team 7, not for Taka as a whole, but for Karin.

There’s no validity in any claim that says otherwise.

what was it that Tobirama explained about the Uchiha and why do you consider it as something positive for SasuKarin? care to rant?

Definitely!

I consider it positive for SasuKarin for more than one reason, but the biggest one is the following:

As I briefly explained here, Sasuke’s Mangekyo did indeed react to Karin’s plight. In other words, her potential loss was shown to have an effect on Sasuke’s Sharingan, which unlocked a new power: the ability to extinguish the Amaterasu flames, in order to save her.

This is very relevant for two different reasons:

Tobirama outright states that what triggers said changes on an Uchiha’s eyes is their struggle with the despair of having lost / potentially losing a person the Uchiha feels “a strong love” (愛情に深い) for (note: love here does not carry romantic connotations, it just reflects the strength of said feelings).

True to those words, the times during which Sasuke’s Sharingan has reacted in some way, shape or form are related to either Itachi or Naruto. We know just how important those two bonds are to Sasuke. So the fact that so far the only instance unrelated to either of them happened due to Karin is very important in my eyes.

Another reason why I consider Chapter 619 important is because it helps shed a lot of light about just whydid Sasuke begin to Change so swiftly after the loss of Itachi; it helps explain his behavior during the Kage Summit.

And it also makes his behavior during the Killerbee fight even more eye-catching. As Tobirama put it, ”When an Uchiha that has known love loses it … it turns into an even stronger hate and changes that person.” So that Taka was able to move Sasuke despite that and that the prospect of losing Karin was able to shake Sasuke hard enough to have him awaken a power for reasons other than his hatred, is also quite something in my eyes (and I can’t help but feel it also feels an earlier bit of Tobirama’s speech, haha).

Lastly! I also personally find what the Hokage said in regards to the Uchiha’s darkness interesting in the context of Sasuke’s betrayal of Karin, considering it was her who Kishi used for Sasuke’s Moral Event Horizon and as his threshold into “true darkness”. But now that is nothing but speculation on my end haha

In the manga: Karin only acts on her feelings for Sasuke twice (348, 355), gives a passing after-thought to his looks once (363, only to call him Weakling/Pathetic right after), and blushes over him a grand total of 3 times (351, 408, 411). If we take into account 365, then that would be the only time Karin has been shown entertaining the thought of making a move on him - a comedic moment, and a thought she immediately dismisses in order to focus on more pressing matters.

So as you can see, the number of instances in canon is quite limited. Unlike in the anime, where they played it up to 100 (having Karin making random expressions, having out-of-place thoughts, so on so forth. I also included the “But… isn’t that his older brother?“ comment there because it’s also filler and Karin thinks no such thing in canon), and consequently helped foment the misconception of Karin being a fangirl.

This honestly summarizes the divergence between the two better than any words could:

I’m probably missing a couple of scenes from the Kage Summit arc, because I have not watched it in its entirety orz also, I’m only focusing on fillers affecting Karin’s characterization, because Pierrot’s portrayal of her has sadly given a lot of anime-only watchers the wrong impression about her character (and it’s often the reason why many find her annoying and creepy) ;~;

My take on how Kishi has shown Sasuke cares quite strongly about Karin - the summary -

This is another one of those old laps I wrote last year, but when I was gathering them I realized that since imageftw is down all the images are down orz So I’m giving it another shot.

Since it was kind of out-dated (it’s from when 619 came out) I tried to update it a bit by adding Sasuke’s apology to Karin. But aside from that I basically left it as it was haha ALSO it was written with neutral readers in mind, for the FC’s “misconceptions” section, so that’s why it’s a bit more detached than usual.

Anyways here goes!

Why Sasuke does not see Karin as ‘just a tool’ and in which ways Kishi has showcased that he definitely cares about her have all been thoroughly discussed both here [the FC] and in tumblr, so I thought of addressing the matter from a different angle.

That is, not whether or not Sasuke cares, but that he cares quite strongly about her - as per 619’s wording.

Note: First and foremost it’s worth clarifying that the point of this post is not to claim that Sasuke harbors any romantic feelings for Karin as of now—the nature of his feelings for her is ultimately beside the point and holds no weight in this particular argument. So that is a subject I won't be touching upon here.

Note 2: I’ll be drawing parallels to and mentioning Sasuke’s bond with other characters, especially Naruto and Itachi.
