Darling @elleluvsl tagged me to copy-paste the last sentence I wrote, but since that was weeks ago and it’s been even longer since I’ve posted any SK… have the last oneshot I tried to write for them instead lol

“Hey, Sasuke,”
He glances at her from the top of his tea mug, and Karin swallows to moisten her suddenly dry tongue.
“Did you know that bastard Suigetsu thought you and I would be a thing?”
She picks her best disbelieving tone, throws in an eye-roll for good measure. Pretends she isn’t watching his every move, sensing even the slightest shift of his chakra.
There is none, not really. But Sasuke does arch an eyebrow a fraction, and Karin follows his clue to explain.
“Juugo told me the other day. Seems like Suigetsu used to go on and on about it back when we were Taka.”
Sasuke snorts, attention going back to his tea. “Don’t know where he got that idea from.”
His reaction is just about what she expected, but it still stings to hear him say it. To hear Sasuke dismiss the thought of them so easily; to know in no ambiguous terms that it never even crossed his mind. At all.
Still, Karin knows better than to let the pang of hurt show; knows she’s supposed to snort in kind, cross her legs and take a sip of her own tea. So she does just that and throws him an airy, “Right?”
She plays her role and plays it well. Thinks the conversation is done, stores it away to mull over it when he isn’t around to see her ache. So when Sasuke leans back, the last thing Karin expects is what comes out of his mouth.
A few weeks ago I got this commission and now this wonderful piece of art came out... Now, this art is even more significant for me. Thanks @skania and all SK fandom 💕

I forgot to mention this, but a while ago I bought the French release of the Naruto volumes with the third-party SK commentary just to see how they handled it. Let me tell you, they went all out with the SK 😎
First is of course, Tobi saying that Sasuke went out of his way to recruit his favorite (お気に入り), aka Karin. While Viz's glosses over that bit with a simple "I see now why Sasuke chose [Karin]", the way Kana worded it got me ROLLING 🤣
"[It was a wise decision to bring this woman with him. She's useful.] He sought her out, seduced by her skill."

Then, we have Suigetsu spilling the SK beans to Juugo. Viz nails it, but the French manage to go even harder because they emphasize that Suigetsu isn't only saying they'd be getting in Karin's way, but in their way (二人の邪魔をする), as if SK were an item as far as Suigetsu is concerned lol
"Listen, Karin has got it bad for Sasuke. She only had one thing in mind: spending some quality time alone with her boyfriend. We would only be disturbing their privacy."
"Go find our lovebirds, obviously."
Although Kana's next dialogue kind of misses the mark ("Annoying Karin is one of my favorite sports"), because in that panel Suigetsu isn't talking about annoying Karin but about meddling with SK lol
Lastly, we have the moment where Suigetsu says that he loves breaking SK apart when they're about to get together (くっつき). Viz's version is short and sweet, but Kana's really nails just how sure Suigetsu is of SasuKarin lol
"[...] The mere idea of getting in the way of a budding relationship to break it up... there's nothing better. Breaking in two what's together as one is like slicing a prey in two... neat and proper. I can't get enough of it!"
Those are the biggest ones. But I also quite liked Kana's take on Sasuke thanking Karin in 412, and on Karin's line in 482.
In 412, Viz translates Sasuke's "助かったぞ" as a simple "Thanks". But what he says it's more along the lines of "You saved me". The French translate it more casually, but do make sure to emphasize Sasuke's gratitude and just how big of a help Karin was to him.
"I really owe you one, Karin."
Lastly, we have c482. Viz' went for a literal translation, so it's perfectly accurate. But the French chose to emphasize the look in Sasuke's eyes, and that killed me a little inside when I first read it.
"Just once... I'd have liked to see that look in his eyes again..."
it’s 2018 and i’m still in denial over sk not getting married because like…we have it all. battle couple. shared past. similar backgrounds. mutual trust. mutual respect. protection. defending each other from insults. other characters shipping them. we’re like every fanfic trope in one ship and we didn’t get a canon wyd kishi.
While we’ve already made some gifs about the matter, this picture is far more straightforward, I believe.
A short comparison between Naruto’s and Karin’s roles during Sasuke’s descent into darkness during Part 1 (his deflection, VotE) and Part 2 (Kage Summit, his fight against Danzou). Sharing it here in case you guys find it interesting, too.
I made it for a short essay focused not on whether or not Sasuke cares about Karin - but on that he cares “quite strongly” about her, as per 619’s wording. For those interested in reading it, you can find it here in the Ice&Spice FC~ :D
I visited the old SK Baidu Bar today and came across something that definitely belongs in this post lol
In these scenes where Sasuke is preparing to finish Naruto/Karin off with his Chidori, the translation in English used different wording (“Later” vs “Farewell”), but Sasuke’s goodbye in Japanese is actually the same “じゃあな” (Later/See you) in both.
Kishi really went and gave SK all the painful parallels with none of the emotional pay-off 😂
Honestly, the Gaiden ended up being a blessing in disguise because it proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that all Karin cares for is about Sasuke’s happiness.
But the thing is, it’s not that Karin suddenly “grew up” and gave up on him and so her love “became” selfless.
It was always like this.
When Karin says this in Chapter 482, she’s talking about Sasuke’s smile. The kind, carefree smile he showed her when he saved her from that bear in the FoD.
In other words, as early as Chapter 482 Kishi had Karin state that all she wanted was to see Sasuke happy again. That’s the reason she went so far for him and why she stuck with him through thick and thin. She did it all in the hopes that by accomplishing his goals, Sasuke would be able to find happiness.
That is the way she loved him. Being with him romantically was secondary to her focus and her wish for his well-being and his happiness (and in fact she only tried to make a move on him three times in the entire manga).
So, this line from the Gaiden? Karin’s mindset? It’s not something that suddenly happened. She literally felt this way all along ;-;

So what do you think about story of art? One of my friends said that the picture reminded her of the goukon ahah :)
In process of drawing I was thinking about a Karin’s concession speech, something like «Well, I feel it’s time for me to give up… I’d be lying if I would say that I liked Sakura from the beginning, but… When she helped me, I … Well, I think she’s a very good girlfriend, you look nice together. And if it’s good for you, it’s good for me…” etc ahah Very sweet and primitive speech yeah. But nevertheless it made an unspeakable impression on Sasuke (classics!) and forced to look at Karin from the other side (winks)
P.S. By the way, when I was drawing Sasuke, I thought more about his image from the ninth film :D
You know… It’s been so long since I’ve drawn SasuKarin, so…It should be something more diffrent from my ordinary arts with both of them… Something a very sensual… I hope I have been able to achieve this! And fans of this lovely fanon are also pleased looking at this art, as I am :)
