Sonic Heroes’ portrayal of Shadow during his whole amnesia ordeal is worth noting, because my favorite detail about his character is that apparently he’s enamored by Bingo Highway’s flashing lights and bingo boards.

“Cool city!” He says as he enters

“Naturally!” He says as you get a good score

He’s so much more playful then, and I love it. Then that carries over into Circus Park in the proceeding game, his titular self titled adventure, where he comments on it being his “lucky day” and pretty much gives the camera a rare small smile

And also, I’d like to point out that during one of the ARK levels where Shadow is in some wierd memory/flashback/jedi mind trick, the Memory!Maria makes the comment of “You used to run so quickly down these halls.”, which immediately makes me wonder if Shadow and Maria were the sort of kid duo that scampered around the place, knew all the best hiding vents, and pretty much had imaginative “adventures” great proportions on the ARK whenever Maria was feeling up to it.

Then there was that time Rouge tripped Shadow and he responded with basically a: “Hey! You tripped me!” when we’ve been used to him lashing out

I’m so glad to see that Shadow’s been doing so much better these years, he’s really starting to come out of his shell and he’s more playful than he was when he first arrived.

Maria would be so proud

At the end of Devilman, Akira gave up on humanity.

Akira let humanity exterminate each other, he sat on the sidelines for 20 years this lasted. Satan did the same.

The one who regretted and lamented humanity extinction wasn’t Akira. It was Satan. 

Furthermore, I’ll say that the reason why Go Nagai made his last thoughts/biggest remorse be Satan’s crying face is because Akira forgot why he became a devilman in the first place. He claimed it was to protect humanity, but was it really? In volume 1, his motivation is far less grand: it’s to help Ryo and to be with him:

That puts his actions after the broadcast in a different light, as his grudge against Satan. Akira actually never acknowledges or calls Satan as Ryo during the war until he realizes Satan is crying. 

That’s also why Devilman Lady ends like that, why Akira’s issues aren’t about protecting humanity, but rather his conflicted feelings toward Satan and how the conclusion is positive because he was able to keep up with what he wanted in the first place. That is to be by their side as their ally:

Akira became who he was because of Satan. And that was his choice.

This humanity champion demon for the sake of a human girl arc isn’t Akira’s arc, that’s Amon’s arc. The original Devilman. Amon (Devilman) changed for the sake of Miki and betrayed the demons to protect the human world. Akira meanwhile changed because of Ryo. 

This continues in every Go Nagai work. When Nagai needs a humanity champion against demons, he’s not using Akira, he uses Amon*. Unfortunately, spinoffs makers and adaptations kind of… butcher both Akira and Amon, making Amon a ‘bad’ influence for Akira while Akira the human champion which in turn butchers the nuanced relationship he has with Satan.

*Physically Amon looks no different from Nagai’s typical protagonist.
