ppl talking bout some „goh didn’t deserve suicune!!” n shit BUT HELLO? DID YOU WATCH THE SHOW WITH UR EYES CLOSED??
Let’s start from the beginning:
First, Goh’s first thought at the sight of Suicune wasn’t to catch it, but free it. We see that with how he immediately goes to help Ash with battling the hunters despite knowing how bad their odds are. He only decided to catch Suicune once he saw that their attacks were ineffective and sooner or later, one of the hunters would’ve thrown their pokéball instead.
Catching Suicune was never Goh’s top goal. Of course we know that he wanted to, seeing as his goal is to catch every pokémon, but he never prioritised it. The second he caught it, he ran off to find a safe place for it, and when Suicune left the pokéball he gently tried to convince it that he wasn’t trying to hurt it. Even though Suicune wasn’t having any of it, it’s not like he couldn’t have just said „Suicune, return” and kept it inside the pokéball. He understood it’s wish to stay out and gathered his other pokémon to protect it, knowing that Suicune wouldn’t trust a human. You can see that when he brings it food, he doesn’t give it to Suicune himself, letting Raichu do it.
Upon noticing how Suicune’s leg is hurt, he goes in to help. And even though we see Suicune acting very hostile towards him, he literally just smiles understandingly. Still, knowing that he might get hurt if he gets too close to Suicune, he prioritises its health and disinfects its wound before bandaging it. So I’m not going to have anyone saying that Goh only sees pokémon as trophies to collect because this is just one example among many others how that’s just simply not true.
I would also like to note, that Goh never pressured Suicune into battling. He didn’t assume that just because he caught it, it would oblige. Suicune decided to help him on its own, for which we can see he is extremely grateful.
And this is the part that really hit me, especially after seeing people hating on Goh for keeping Suicune.
He literally left the pokéball on the ground. He didn’t just let Suicune out of it. He left the entire pokéball there, which basically shows that his intention was to cut off any ties he had with Suicune. Now this part most people seem to miss, because Suicune leaves the pokéball almost immediately after realising what Goh is trying to do, and lets him know that it wants to stay. It was entirely Suicune’s decision, even though Goh made it clear that there was no pressure on it. Goh is also extremely appreciative for that, which people seem to forget.
I feel like it’s often forgotten that legendaries also have feelings, and can get attached to a certain trainer, just like Scorbunny did in the earlier episodes. We see exactly that happening here, and I would like to note that both Zapdos and Lugia weren’t caught by him, since well, they’re legendaries. Yes, Goh did get lucky with Suicune, but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t deserve it.
At the very end of the episode Suicune seemingly disappears, and most trainers would probably be extremely upset seeing that their legendary pokémon just upped and left. Goh however smiles, because he’s not worried. He doesn’t need Suicune to stay, but he appreciates it and knows it will.
So no. Goh probably couldn’t catch a legendary just like that ever again. But that doesn’t mean that he didn’t deserve the trust Suicune gave him, because he clearly cared for it’s wellbeing, even though he wasn’t ever planning on keeping it.
If I see another one of pokémon dudebros hating on Goh for catching Suicune when it wasn’t „his to take” I’m actually gonna crash out because who would you rather catch it?? The hunters? Bffr.
Anyways I needed to get this off my chest because I was genuinely speechless after seeing the sheer amount of people hating on Goh for „stealing” Suicune’s freedom.
