Introducing my latest but not-so-new ‘toy’ that I received last Feb, an ultra lightweight wheelchair 😂 Kinda strange that I can almost feel like I’m posting something on my mountain bike instead of my mobility aid. I name my it ‘Ikigai’ which translates to ‘a reason for being/living’ as it changed my perspective once again on how I see what I love & passionate about in life, what I’m really good at doing, what the world & everybody needs & what I can be paid for or benefit from. I’m so grateful that found my ikigai quite a long time ago & was living my life to the fullest. After my accident, I was forced to rethink & maybe try to search for it again since I am now in a totally different physical condition & circumstances 👨🏻‍🦽 I may or may not find it again but I know I’m going to make sure the process of finding & making my way to the overlapped centre of my passion, mission, profession & vocation circles to be fun, enjoyable & rewarding 😎 This is Quickie Krypton ultra lightweight rigid wheelchair, one of the coolest & lightest wheelchair in the world that can go as light as 6.2kg or 3.7kg transport weight. Mine is a custom build-to-order for my body measurements with additional parts that I want specifically so it’s a bit heavier than this. This is a full carbon fibre x-braid tech frame, axle-stems, axle tube, backrest, side guards & footrest. Magura carbotecture forks, 12 spokes Spinergy wheels, Schwalbe marathon plus evo tyres, Ellipse 3R hand rims, compact brakes, slings seat & Jay cushion. Adjustable back angle, centre of gravity & rear seat height. Foldable backrest, 0 degree camber, 92 degrees performance frame angle & 30mm frame inset, narrow castor house position & I’m sure know none of you understand or care about any of the above 🤣 I don’t see this toy as something that limits my movements & what I can do but it’s instead something that takes me everywhere & makes everything possible again. Throwback Thursday! Thanks so much for organising this birthday party surprise 2 months ago. You know who you are. I didn’t expect it at all and it was a pleasant surprise. Really appreciate it, thanks again! 🙏🏻 Also thanks to everyone (more not in the photo!) in Daehan Rehabilitation Hospital for celebrating my birthday! I didn’t expect my doctor, physiotherapists and everyone there kept it a secret the whole time that day until the surprise 🤣 My doctor was part of the conspiracy 😂 when after a follow up consultation right after my physiotherapy session, she pretended that she wanted to show me the Angel Exoskeleton Robot they have just received recently. It was a little odd as everything was a bit sudden and the fact that I know the exoskeleton is not suitable for me due to its operating requirements. So, I know something is not right but good acting nevertheless! 😆 It was great to finally see and get to know everybody’s face for once after half a year of recognising people only from their eyes. I definitely felt more connected. I hope the whole hospital enjoyed the delicious overloaded food! I have gone through 1.5 years of therapy now 😮‍💨 and I can say that the work of rehab doctors, occupational and physiotherapists are not easy at all. It requires a lot patience having to go through countless follow ups and very extensive therapy activities for a really long time but for very tiny little progress. Thank you so much to all my doctors and therapists in Putrajaya Hospital, Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital, University Malaya Medical Centre, Socso Rehabilitation Centre, Tung Shin Hospital, Daehan Rehabilitation Hospital as well as all doctors and therapists out there. For me, it’s just a much more challenging, adventurous, less travelled route 😉 I signed the contract for this shop lot around 3 years ago. Then suddenly COVID-19 appeared out of nowhere the next year. Making things worse, I had the mountain bike accident the following year and I was paralysed. Life was a crazy ride on a roller coaster ever since 👨🏻‍🦽 All of the savings and budget for the shop were used for the unexpected accident, recovery, rehabilitation and needs living with the new physical condition. Most of the plans for the shop were changed leaving me with the most basic things ever just enough to start a store 🤔 With very uncertain future for this business now, I simply took the risk of continuing with the really basic plan of opening the new store and just hope it will survive and sustain. I guess I was always and still am risk taker. Better late than never, Happy new year! Hoping the year 2022 to be a much better year for all of us in every way! Endless joy, laughter, success, happiness, health, wealth, luck, dreams, peace, resolution, everything lah! 🤣 I did my physiotherapy in Socso Rehab Centre, Quill City Mall for 8 months and started at a new place now in Daehan Rehabilitation Hospital several weeks ago mainly for robotic gait training, electrical stimulation and core strengthening. For a paraplegic like me, standing is good for better blood circulation, increase bone density, improve digestion system, better respiration, less pressure on skin, muscles stretching and increase overall well-being. I wasn’t standing for almost a year since I was discharged from the hospital in early 2021. This is me standing again after a very long time few weeks ago supported by the standing frame machine and no, I can’t stand on my own. 12 Sept is now a date that I will always remember for the rest of my life. I wanted to share this yesterday but there were too many things going on in my mind. I was overwhelmed mentally & emotionally. I didn’t get to do almost everything I wanted. I'm now paralysed for 365 days! Time goes by so fast that everything was just like yesterday. Mixed feelings. I'm happy that I’m still alive from the near death experience but at the same time, I'm very sad on a lot of things. Obviously on the things that I can't do anymore. Too many things to list but the most devastating fact is that I probably can no longer pursue my ultimate dream. To continue doing humanitarian field work in war zones, conflict areas & disaster grounds but maybe 1-2 years in each country & I don’t even mind without salary as long as I have food to eat & a place to live. The plan was to really live in those places, learn everything I need, help everyone I could, until there’s significant positive impact or change in the community before moving to another. Even if it will be the time for me to start a family, I would still want it to be in a humanitarian setting. Get my family to know humanitarian work, maybe home school my children, let them be friends with refugees, etc. For the first time in my life, I was very heart broken & crushed that everything is so far beyond reach. Some will say that maybe it's still possible for me but from the actual on the ground requirements & my needs in this new condition, it's technically impossible for me to do it anymore. Possibly something similar and in a different environment but it will never be the same. I'm actually left without a dream! How can someone not have a dream? It's a very strange feeling. Sometimes, I really don’t know how I should move on, where should I go, what should I do or when should I start again. I pray that no one else have to experience the burdens, challenges & everything that I have gone through for the past 1 year. I know things will continue to be difficult for me in a way or another but I also know I need to hunt for a slightly different new dream now. It is exactly 10 months post accident, today. What you see in this photo is the shower trolley I use every morning to duh, take a shower in the hospital. It was taken around a month after my accident, about 3 weeks after my surgery. I was usually transferred from my bed by at least 3 persons every morning. Pushed to a special big bathroom where the trolley can easily be manoeuvred. The bathroom always felt like a mortuary to me. I don’t know why. I was able to brush my teeth, wash my face, shampoo and wash my upper body on my own. Everything else was assisted. I can’t remember when exactly but it took quite some time to be able to sit and transfer to commode wheelchair for shower. Anyway, neurologically speaking, my specialist doctor said I have 18 months for me to try to do anything to recover. Whatever recovery I gained within this golden period of time will be the only thing that I will have for the rest of my life. Quite stressful to hear, right? But it’s still something that I have no choice but to face and deal with. I wonder what will happen next. Unlike the specialist doctor, many of my physiotherapists think differently. They said it’s unfair for the doctor to give a period of time for the recovery expectation. They believe it depends on my other factors too and gave examples of many cases of people only going for physiotherapy years after their accident and still recovering. I don’t want to put too much hope but I’m not going to give up either. I will keep doing physiotherapy and try all alternative treatments I can find out there. But the most important thing of all is to try my best to continue living my life now in this condition no matter how hard it will be and not waste anymore time. 10 months is already a very long time. Lost time is never found again. We all should really be present and live our lives to the fullest every single day.
