and it also depends on what the story is
in general, i'd say vampires. but if the story is about a vampire and it's done incorrectly i might choose werewolves, vice versa. if the story is about a love story they're tied, i also LOVE metaphors. like if your vampirism is a metaphor for hiding something about yourself, which could be anything, i will EAT IT UP!!!!!
if you're a werewolf and it's a coming of age story, i LOVE those! so it all really depends for me. i like vampires and i like traditional vampires, i like werewolves and traditional werewolves. if your werewolf is like a lumberjack man i will not be a fan sorry. if your vampire is like one of those pretty boys tm with the same hairstyle and are deathly pale, i will not be a fan sorry!!!! i know they're vampires so they can't go into the sun but come on skin still has pigmentation even if you don't ever tan </3
it also depends on what your werewolf "turns into" at night. is it every night? is it just every full moon? is it an anthropomorphic wolf that stands on two feet, or a feral wolf on all fours? do you just gain ears, a tail, and a lot of hair furry style? are they very hairy naturally?
same with vampires, how long have they been alive? does this affect the way they act and how they talk and who they've met? if it doesn't i usually think like "this is cool but it could be better." do they kill people for blood or do they feed just enough?

if it's a species question vs a character question, i prefer werewolves over vampires because wolves! in general vs. species is different btw in general would include characters, stories, ect. ect.
characters being fleshed out needs to happen all the time, but especially if they're nonhuman. if your vampire is JUST a vampire, or your werewolf is just a werewolf it's less fun and at that point i'd rather choose neither. it also depends on the world setting! if it's a fantasy world, it could be okay for your vampire/werewolf to just be what they are, but if it's set in the human world/earth is there a reason they don't hide it? does your vampire live in a haunted house? does your werewolf live in the woods? it's just jarring to see a half-human, half-wolf walking around a highschool like nothing. same thing with vampires. AND IF YOUR WEREWOLF IS STEREOTYPICALLY STUPID I HATE YOU
