That could be very traumatic for you.
That’s because you make a man feel happy.
‘’– such a SHAME.’’ he muttered, looking down at his phone before looking up. ‘’sorry– what were you SAYING??’’
Savannah tapped her clipboard and sighed. “So you didn’t hear any of my instructions?”
isobelkane:
It had been a long day and as much as she wanted to, sleep wasn’t exactly her best friend. So, just like several other nights before, she’d come out with a blanket to keep her warm, to sit somewhere nice to just watch the stars for a while. She didn’t exactly expect to run into someone who’d decided to take up her usual spot. “I’m sorry – I didn’t think anyone else would be out here.”
Savannah was laying in the grass, looking up at the stars with a vacant expression. Lost in her own thoughts, she was surprised to hear someone else’s voice. Her head turned calmly towards the sound as she remained on the ground. “Don’t worry about it. There’s enough stars out here for everyone.” Her brown eyes made their way back up to the sky. “I’m always out here. I’m terrible at sleeping.”
Sleepless Nights// Ross & Sav
“Huh, didn’t figure you for a runner.” Ross said, lifting his eyebrows in surprised interest. “Then again, I don’t usually ask myself those questions about people’s personal lives.” He watched her lean against the tree as she made a comment about how dead he looked, and he grinned cheekily at her. “I’m merely practicing for the inevitable end, just to make sure it suits my lifestyle needs.” He said sarcastically as he laid back down, folding his hands behind his head and readjusting himself to get comfortable once more. He laughed quietly to himself at her comment, finding himself surprised that she liked stars too. “Do you really think that someone laying face-up in the grass at almost three A.M. isn’t looking at the stars?” He turned to smirk at her, “I mean honestly, did you really think I’m playing dead out here?” He was silent for a few moments as his eyes scanned the sky before he reached up and pointed. “There’s Orion’s belt. It’s a shame- tonight’s got my favorite constellation just out of sight.”
In truth, Savannah was not a runner which was why a small smile spread across her lips. “Probably a good general practice. If you did, you might actually have to care about people.” she joked, eventually sitting at a comfortable distance beside Ross on the grass. She leaned back on her hands to look up at the stars, laughing at his comment. “Dead people can’t see the stars you know. I just thought you were committing to the role. So yeah, I thought you were playing dead. My brain’s a little dysfunctional right now, sorry.” Her brown eyes scanned the sky that sparkled with familiarity. Savannah loved the stars and planets- unlike much in her life, they guaranteed consistency. No matter what foster family she was with, the sky was always there filling her with the same sense of wonder. Her gaze towards the sky broke as Ross mentioned his favorite constellation. “And which one would that be? Let me guess.... Leo? Or maybe Perceus? You seem like you’d like the brave warrior types.”
Comfort // Savannah & Ryker
✘ — RYKER knew from her posture that she was uncomfortable talking about the subject. but did that ever stop him ?? no. he was always so forward with things, wanting to get straight to the point. as she explained the situation, ryker nodded his head as he realised why the name was so familiar. ❝ i know his case. in the academy, we had to assess several different cases, and sexual abuse was one of them. i’m very sorry that happened to you. you were very brave, ❞ he said, knowing exactly what it felt like to shoot someone. he spent three years of his life doing it. ❝ because the only way i can help myself is if i forget my past, and i’ve learned that no matter how far you go, you can never escape it, ❞ he explained, the words ringing true to him.
Brave. That’s what they’d all called her before. However Savannah had been convinced that the emptiness she felt was not bravery, but an odd form of fear and denial. “You do? Well then you know he’s a shitty person I’m ashamed to be related to then. I just wish he’d... go away.” she slowly looked over at him Her brown eyes scanned the man carefully as she continued to hug her knees. “Yeah,” she nodded in agreement as she still pondered the happenings that lead up to his statement. “Why would you try to escape something that makes you who you are? Even if it is horrific or whatever it still... you know, happened.” she spoke before letting out a long sigh.
Comfort // Savannah & Ryker
✘ — RYKER’S eyebrows pinched together as he vaguely recognised the name. ❝ benjamin monroe … the name sounds familiar. do you mind me asking what he did ?? i’m sure if his crime was so severe that you had to shoot him, he won’t be released any time soon, ❞ ryker said, but he knew that the police system was so M E S S E D up these days that some crimes weren’t even considered crimes anymore. ❝ that’s correct. it’s an awful lot, but nobody else will do the job. ❞ ryker shrugged and pulled his badge out of his pocket, flipping it open as he tried to remember why he was in this field of work. ❝ for me, i joined because it feels thought i can’t help M Y S E L F , at least i can help other people. there is so much bad in the world that someone needs to stop it. ❞
Savannah tensed up at the inquisition. If there was one thing she hated, it was drudging up the past. With a old vacant stare into the darkness, she continued slowly. “He was abusive. Mostly sexually to me and a few other kids in the neighborhood. I guess it’d been happening for years to some of the other kids, but was only old enough later on and so I... I only shot him in the foot because I didn’t know any other way to stop him from hurting people...” her voice trailed off, still void of emotion. It was an odd feeling of relief to share the part of her dark past and how she’d found herself in the fostercare system. “Why couldn’t you help yourself? Seems like that would be the person you’d want to help first before the rest.” she asked with a curious sideways glance.
✘ — ❝ WELL, my coach pushes me pretty hard. hey, i maybe F L U F F Y , but i can kick some serious boo-tay. ❞
“FLUFFY? So that’s what they’re calling it now?” Sannah giggled. “So I’m guessing you’re on a Vanderwood team?”
‘’oh no. i just like the company. plus– i just wanted to see this. always heard about this place from my cousin.’’ derek murmured, walking by her side as he looked around.
“Your cousin’s from around here?” Savannah asked curiously. “What’s their name? I bet you five bucks I know them.” the brunette smiled as she walked.
Sleepless Nights// Ross & Sav
Ross didn’t know the word for the way the stars made his chest feel; as though it wanted to float up and be one with the stars he gazed at each night. He stared up at Capricorn, lit brightly tonight in the sky, and took a deep breath before tapping the watch on his wrist. The apple watch had been a gift from his mother for his twenty first birthday, and as it lit up he saw that yet again he was awake far too late to be healthy. He could feel his eyes sting with a need that his body rarely caved into, and he let himself settle fully into the grass beneath him. He could hear the cicadas, around him, the occasional firefly blinking in the night, and he could feel his heart jump into his throat as he heard a soft voice call out. “Well as okay as anyone awake at this hour probably is. The real question is are you okay?” He sat up on his elbows and peered into the darkness until his vision cleared. “Savannah? No shit, what are you doing out here?”
Raising a singular brow when she recognized the voice, Ross’ silhouette all of the sudden became recognizable as he called out her name. Her shoulders instantly relaxed as a lazy smile appeared on her face. “I was running. I like to run around here when I can’t sleep.” Savannah paused, steadying one of her somewhat frequent dizzy spells by leaning against a nearby tree. A few blinks later, the feeling passed over her. “I’m fine. Although, I’m not the one laying in the grass like a dead guy.” the girl shrugged casually as she stepped out from the canopy she was caught in under the nearest tree that lined the path. Her dark gaze moved to the sky after a moment of silence. “You know, this is the best time of night to watch the stars- when there’s no one else around to interrupt them.”
Sleepless Nights// Ross & Sav
It was a warm July night in Kingston, New York. Yet sun had set just a few hours ago, but Savannah was nowhere near ready to sleep. She had too many thoughts floating through her mind, aimlessly poking and prodding her until she stayed up well past any time a normal student would be awake. To combat her mess of thoughts, Savannah usually went on a run through the Vanderwood park trails and tonight was no different. So she set out along the dimly lit path into the slightly humid night, hoping to find some solace. She had only jogged about a half mile, not even breaking a sweat when her phone’s battery died and thus her music disappeared. A minor setback, the girl stopped to tuck her headphones away in her jacket pocket before she noticed someone laying the grass just a few feet away. “Hello?” the small brunette called into the night, now sincerely regretting letting her phone die. “Are you okay?” ( @ross-livingston)
“Hey,” he exclaimed in mock offense. “I will have you know that Paulina has won several lying championships, thank you very much.” He tucked his hands into his pockets as he gave her a grin. “It’s Ross, by the way; and you might have seen the sandwich as it comes from a local eatery, and maybe me once or twice.” He looked at her questioningly. “What’s your name?”
Pursing her lips together in an amused smile, she examined his sandwich. “Yeah I don’t really go to the eatery all that often. Must have seen it somewhere else. Maybe on the food channel?” Savannah wiggled her brows. “Nice try Paulina, but unfortunately you’re stuck with that name now. I’m Savannah Monroe.” the girl gave him a devious smile and a nod.
Comfort // Savannah & Ryker
✘ — ❝ YOUR father is in prison ?? what’s his name ?? ❞ always on duty – it was practically a curse. he’d always been so curious about investigations, always jumping the gun when it came to things like this. even in the military, ryker would be keen to go on whatever missions he could. if took his mind off everything. ❝ i think boredom is one of many reasons, ❞ ryker said. ❝ it could be they were bored, or because of their upbringing, or due to jealously and anger, or because they are genuinely bad people. ❞ he ran his tongue over his bottom and sighed. ❝ when you’re in this sort of work, you think – what is the point in doing this ?? sure, it rids the world of evil, but 30 percent of people are criminals. that’s 30 in every H U N D R E D. there are only 300 police officers for every 100,000 thousands inhabitants. there’s more criminals than there are police officers, so the more people we don’t catch, the more criminals will think they can get away with it. so they do it all the more. ❞
“Back in Oregon, yeah.” Savannah snuffled. “Benjamin Monroe. He, uh,” Savannah stuttered through her words, which was something she did not find her self doing on a normal day. “He did some terrible things. To me, to the neighbors.. so I stopped him with a gun when I was nine and now he’s in prison. I hoped he’d be there forever but it sounds like he might be let out for good behavior soon.” Her voice was so quiet, it was now a struggle to hear. She watched Ryker explain how few police officers there were on the streets, nodding slowly. “So you’re in charge of like 333 bad people.” Savannah confirmed. “That’s an awful lot of people. Why would anyone become a police officer anyways? It seems so.. sad all the time.”
Isobel watched the girl who didn’t seem too well after bumping into her and nodded quickly at her question. “I’m okay, don’t worry. Just a little tired.” Isobel said, ready to focus on the other. “Are you alright? You look a little pale…”
“Tired? Why?” Savannah glanced at herself in the reflection as the room spun slowly. Closing her eyes for a moment, she took a deep breath to stop the spinning. “I’m fine. I’m probably just dehydrated or something.”
