My cafeteria even serves sushi! This was less than a dollar!

There's nothing like a hectic weekend in Bangkok to make me really appreciate coming home to Phetchaburi. Bangkok was stressful and tiring. Phetchaburi was nice and calm and in a drizzle when I arrived. I even had the mini van drop me off right in front of Benchama - with some contempt from the van people. Ugh. Well, I did have plenty of exercise walking in circles this weekend so that's a plus.. And I learned more of the city so that'll help a bit more next time I'm in Bangkok.
Also, had my first scorpion sighting whilst washing the dishes. The little guy was hiding in between my dishes. Hopefully won't find one inside the house next time.
Ahhhh I dont ever want to take a mini holiday in Bangkok again unless its with Lexi. Next time, I'll opt for Hua Hin. The beach sounds much better.

So, I love my workplace. The guys I work with are pretty cool, bring up interesting conversations, not all the time but its alright. They're nice. Unlimited printing, copy and scanning facilities. My boss is comforting and sweet and gives off a maternal love while she rubs my back x) She brings in snacks like fresh fruit or baked goodies. There's unlimited tea, coffee, hot cocoa available. There's ice cold water all the time. A salad lady comes in twice a week with fresh fruit and lettuce salads and also mini fresh spring rolls. Sometimes my coworkers and I pull in for an order from Petch Sandwiches, serving American style sandwiches and fries. Everyone is super sweet. The cafeteria serves bomb Thai food, theres a mini mart, and a bakery on campus. Ahhhh. And hanging out with kids, playing games, hopefully teaching them feels really good. When I do it right. This life isn't too bad, not bad attt allll. Now, if I could learn how to kick back and enjoy it more often that would be nice.
Oh! Next month, December - I practically have the whole month off! First 2 weeks are normal lessons with the exception for having 2 days off for the King's birthday and something else, third week are midterms where we have to proctor exams, that weekend is the first English Program camping trip in Hua Hin, fourth week - we only have school Monday and then a break for 2 weeks where my friend and roommate from Italy - Lexi - is coming to visit!! AHHH I'm so excited and feel so fortunate to have a friend come visit! It'll be nice to see her and especially when I'll have a few days off - plus, I'll spend New Years with her! Yay!!

Witnessed my first flooding Friday. It rained so hard for a whole day and the lack of drainage systems made the water rise to about 1 foot high! It was chaos for 7th and 8th period. Ended up not making any real progress with the kids in 7th period and 8th period was cancelled. Kids running around splashing about. The excitement levels were running on high.
Teaching has been interesting. I can't plan too much ahead because the kids progress is still unpredictable to me. The difference between the 11th classes and 12th classes in each mattayom is so vast! Im still covering last semesters material in the 12 classes, material that is very important before beginning to continue on . I feel embarrassed in my 3/11 class because their math is more advanced than mine. I really need to keep brushing up on my skills. They're the ones that keep me on my toes for sure. I really hope I can become a good teacher and not let these kids down. I feel guilty that my experience is lacking but I am working everyday to learn new and better ways of teaching.
Besides that, I have pretty much been a hermit. That's not new though but I really feel after being here for 2 months that I should be spending more time out and about. I have been stressing about graduate school applications, especially my statement of purpose. I think I need some new inspiration... and take a chill pill and do some living enjoying life.
Today I went to the Costco of Thailand: Makro. Really nice drive out their with my neighbors going the back way through the wetlands. It was a very pretty day, especially after all the rain. Huge selection and even samples! Looks just like Costco to me. I thought of Mom and how she could probably live just fine out here haha.
Til next time!

It's November! Already! Wow, how time flies and it's shocking to me that a year ago I was just in Italy - how blessed I am :)
So , survived my first week as a teacher :) It was magnificent. I did start out having planned Monday lessons, but classes started on a Tuesday - plus, first class was cancelled. We're also on "special time" so school days are an hour shorter than usual which will be going on for a week. I can see that many unexpected disruptions will be happening through out the semester and I just hope I can get these kids to learn as much as I can get them to. And keep them on track with each other. I already can see such a difference between the 2 classes within each grade I have. For example 3/11 is ready for a challenge but 3/12 on the other hand needs review of last semester materials still. My, my. But teaching is fun and many of the students are excited to meet me. To be honest, 3/11 and 3/12 intimidate me because they are so attentive (my math skills are still rusty) and not as easily impressed as the younger grades. I won't let them see that though... :)
Overall, not as intimidating or challenging at all. The key is just to play it by ear, constantly assessing where each class is and plan the day ahead. And be organized. I am already making progress with with M2/11! Now for the rest of the little kiddies... :)

First day back to work today and with a smile all day long! :D I'm happy to be back to work and excited to start teaching tomorrow. Today was preparation and a meeting with new boss Khun Anchalee to discuss the semester to come. There will be 2 weekend camping trips (one in December, one in January) in Hua Hin for M1, M2, M3 - very exciting! all paid for too haha plus only one day of lessons from December 14- January 1! Many other holidays also and activities through the semester. I've been told it really throws off lesson planning but I don't think I'll mind an unexpected day off :)
Today I made a quick stop at the Monday market for some more work shirts - an important monk died recently; there for, we must wear black, white, or grey for the next month. Unfortunately most of my clothes are either yellow or pink soooo yes, i HAD to do some more shopping (sarcasm :) ) Fortunately for me though there was a lady selling formal collared shirts for only TWENTY baht ($0.66) !!! YESS and I was already excited about the 70 b ($2.33) shirt I bought in Chiang Mai! Afterwords, I found the yoga studio a friend told me about and he happened to show up today as well! Really great instructor - and its practically hot yoga because theres no a/c or fans running. What a bargain! Thinking of getting into that for 2 days a week.
Fantastic day, I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders because of that exam. I can focus on being a great teacher and being centered in my now! No more worrying about some standardized test that allows admission counsels to judge whether or not I'm capable of being an excellent graduate student candidate...I loathe standardized testing..

I have discovered that I love Sundays here in Phetchaburi. There is virtually no one on the road, although there are still students roaming around the school grounds. It's common for kids to hang out at school after school hours or on vacations here in Thailand. There also have been events held at my school during the vacation. Every weekend there has been transport vans parked around the grounds, tents set up, and laundered clothes hanging up to dry. I think there was some sort of camp event going on. This caught me off guard at the beginning of vacation and I expected it to be safe enough to wear my mid thigh shorts around campus. Sadly, it was not and a school worker stopped to remind me that it was inappropriate for a teacher to be dressed they way I was. Sighhh.
Anyhow, I love Sundays in Phetchaburi because I can walk around freely roaming the streets, paying no attention to any cars! It's fantastic and its very calming :)
My vacation:
Last Thursday I went to Kenchanaburi province to visit Erawan National Park. It is absolutely beautiful and have many waterfalls. I recommend anyone to go - plus! it's only like 3-4 hours west of Bangkok so it's pretty centrally located. It was my "I-need-to-get-out-of-the-house-I'm-going-crazy" relief trip from studying. Holding myself hostage for a week and a half studying was making me go nuts. And I didn't like that I wasn't enjoying myself being in this beautiful country! So, Kenchanaburi it was. Using an 8 year old lonely planet guide though, I got on the wrong bus twice while I was in Bangkok where someone finally told me I should have just taken a fast mini van from where I started out (Victory Monument) in the first place! Ha! I was hoping to save money though not taking a fast van and that's why I was trying to make my way to the southern bus terminal.Oh, well - it cost me 140 B ($4.66) to get to Kenchanaburi from Bangkok (plus 100 B to get to Bangkok and 20 B getting lost on different buses). When I arrived in Kenchanaburi, it was already late.
I stayed off a foreigner/ touristy street in a place called Sugarcane for 120 B ($4) - private, double bed, cold shower, on the river, restaurant on site. I like finding farang (foreigner) streets because I find people who travel backpack style to be really interesting people. They also sell cool hippy ware on these streets which I happen to love.
Starting out the next day bright and early, for 100 B I took a fast van to Erawan falls - 1 hour or so ride. I thought I'd splurge getting there because I knew I wanted to beat the crowds and have the most prime photo opps. At Erawan National Park, there are 7 waterfalls, although I swear there are more because waterfall 5 and 6 were labelled twice and there were other mini-waterfalls unlabelled. It's a great nature trail with waterfall swimming breaks all along! The trail begins as a distinguished and cleared off route, and then at around the 5/6 waterfall the trail becomes a little like rock climbing and wading through pools/brush. The 7th waterfall is the most epic and beautiful and the most fulfilling one to reach. After the 6th waterfall, you begin to wonder if there is even a 7th waterfall! Climbing shallow and steep stairs while navigating through nature. Then, you emerge from the brush and there is a huge clearing with the tallest waterfall you could imagine! Absolutely amazing. Broke my expensive sandals and made my way back home going a smarter route through Ratchaburi. The regular bus took 2.5 hours back to Kenchanaburi for 50 B. Then, immediately arriving took the 3 hour regular bus to Ratchaburi for another 50 B. Arriving in Ratchaburi, took a fast van for 40 B back to home. I should have went this route through Ratchaburi in the first place! but I didnt give much thought to the route I was taking when I was getting there - silly me.
The next day, Saturday, I was craving some more adventure! so, I decided to take the night bus to Chiang Mai which I found out from a coworker that there was a direct route from my town! But, like I mentioned before Sombat tours was sold out. Last minute decided to take a pricey fast van (140 B = $4.66) to Bangkok Mo Chit station where I took an trip with an average bus company I don't know the name of for 660 B. The trip was around 9 hours from Bangkok.
Chiang Mai is a pretty cool city with an Old City district in the center which is in the shape of a square. The old walls border the district and the old gates are landmarks. Known as the capital of the north, Chiang Mai is a pretty busy city. It has an international airport, a few universities I've heard were good, quite a few foreigners around - at least where I was. From what I read, it was supposed to be an alternative/hippy hang out for many but I didnt get too strong of an impression of this. It's definitely evident but not overruling. There's lots of yoga places, a few meditation centers, and places that cater to ferangs.
In Chiang Mai, I stayed at a hostel called the Rose guesthouse for 130 B ($4.33) a night. Really cool place, located on the corner of a street block with an open air restaurant on the ground floor. Tons of information available and van service information to places surrounding Chiang Mai. There were private rooms available but staying in dorms are defniitely cheaper. 2 showers available and 2 toilets plus a sink area. Rentable towels and locker service. Common area where the rooms were which was nice since my dorm-mates were sleeping whenever I got back. I stayed in an all girls dorm and met a Chinese girl and a Japanese girl when I first arrived. The Chinese girl was just about to fly home after a 2 week travel and the Japanese girl was taking a 6 month journey to travel the world! She was towards the beginning and her next stop would be India.
The first day in Chiang Mai I visited a few places and Wats (temples). Wat Phra Singh, Wat Phra Leung, and the culture center. Temples are beautiful and lavishly ordained. So many details and bright colors and at Wat Phra Singh, there were very old paintings on the walls like the decorations I've seen on the cathedrals walls in Italy. Temples are really beautiful but to be completely honest I don't find myself appreciating them as much as the Italian cathedrals and architecture. Maybe its because I dont know much of the history behind the temples, maybe its because I'm not Buddhist? They are nice to visit though and the temples grounds are calming places to sit and relax with ponds and wooded areas.
The cultural center was interesting and was located in a no longer used royal residence. It gave much history on the city of Chiang Mai and how in the early days they believed cities were beings too so naturally Chiang Mai has a birthdate and a horoscope and had good/bad karma. Chiang Mai was said to be a really blessed place because how they chose it's location was based on a nearby food source, water, There were also 12 temples located around Chiang Mai for protection representing different horoscopes. I visited mine (the Ram) which I though was a really cool temple- Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Had to take a suengthaew up the mountain and climb 300 stairs to this hill top temple. Had a monk bless me, and did a cool stick shaking thing where you shake a container full of numbered sticks. The stick that falls out designates which shelf you grab your Chinese proverb from. Mine said to always consult your elders. Wait for love to come. At this temple, there was also a fantastic view of the city of Chiang Mai.
That night I had the pleasure of witnessing the huge Sunday market and it was huge. Spent a lot of money here but not disappointed at all. I found so many great deals!
Next day was raining which was a great opportunity for me to do some sort of indoor activity, so Chrissy suggested I do a cooking class. I went with Thai Cooking School and did a full day cooking course, learning how to make: Papaya salad, pad thai, cashew chicken, massaman curry paste, massaman curry, and black rice pudding with coconut milk and mung bean topping. Met some cool people. One guy had been teaching in Thailand and we got to talking about that and his experiences here. His parents were visiting and they were on their way back to New Jersey. Another girl, Belgian, had just arrived and her real destination was Laos. A couple from Alabama had come from Indonesia, Bali, Singapore, etc. and they had some interesting stories of living in National Forests, teaching intercity kids, and taking part in a cross country rickshaw race in India. Quite a few other people but there were 2 whom I went with to Doi Suthep and afterwords a Documentary Arts Asia movie event. They were from Quebec, the girl named Chantel works for an NGO in Bangkok working with refugees and the boy Francois works for an urban planning firm in Quebec and mastered in Urban Design! So exciting to talk to him about his work! Gave me some perspective on what I wanted to do. Work for a private firm and have a widely accredited "Planning" degree - some places don't consider a degree that doesn't say Planning in the title to be capable of planning. He seemed to do some really interesting work.
That night I had planned to take a night bus to Mae Hong Son - a city close to the Burmese border, a beautiful mountainous area - but I hadn't made concrete plans so after the movie event it was too late to leave.
Next morning, left to Pai - a hippy hangout NE of Chiang Mai. 762 curves to get there ( as seen on the many touristy Pai shirts when I arrived haha). I wondered if Chrissy had visited Pai cause she must have been really sick or heavily medicated. Anyhow, Pai is also a beautiful and mountainous area as well. Really nice area to get out and away from busy life. Cute town and plenty to see for a couple of days.
From there on, you can view the details of the rest of my adventures below. What I didn't include was that after my exam I had visited Arawan shopping mall off the Chit Lom BTS (skytrain) stop for a meal. I had an awesome sparerib and overeasy egg with rice meal at a place called "Bangkok Cafe." Decided I wanted to see Khao Sarn road for some market strolling but when I arrived at the water taxi - I realized I couldn't afford that AND get back home to Phetchaburi. Anyhow, what I discovered was that navigating Bangkok's many transportation systems is VERY easy.
Back in Phetchaburi now, getting ready for a week of classes, and VERY glad to be over with the Graduate Record Exam. Did I do as well as I had hoped? No. I probably let my nerves get the best of me where I knew I shouldn't have. It is what it is now.
I'm more excited to take on this next challenge though! Teaching begins Tuesday and I can't wait to get to know my students! Weather is beautiful and lovin everyday!
Much love from Phetchaburi xoxo til next time :)

Just arrived in Bangkok this morning at around 7 am and I've checked into my Awesome hostel The City @ Fifty (former Madee). It was a bit far from Moe Chet North bus station so it took me 2 hours or so to get here via city bus, BTS skyline tram, and finally motorcycle taxi. This place has a modern look to it with reasonably new furnishings. I know this because many things are still wrapped in plastic like the seat cushion I'm sitting on, my closet doors, and my power outlets haha. The hostel has 6 floors each of which provide strong wifi connection, provides a free luggage storage up to 7 days, lockers, laundry service (although pricey at 110 B (approx $2.60) wash/dry) and the best part: a rooftop pool! Whooo! I LOVE my life! I chose to splurge at 350 B (approx. $11.60) a night here in Bangkok since I wanted a private room to study in and a hostel on the green BTS line straight to the Maneeya Center where I'll be taking my exam. Its also in an area thats not so touristy, that way I won't be distracted by all the cool sites that around!
And thats not all! Last night I took an overnight bus from Chiang Mai with Sombat Tours company. I suggest this company to ANYONE choosing to travel by bus here in Thailand - it was AMAZING. My coworker had suggested this company to me but last Saturday I hadn't booked in advanced and arrived an hour before departure. Needless to say, they were sold out. Arriving in Chiang Mai Sunday morning in a standard quality bus I caught from Bangkok at 660 B, I decided to buy an advanced ticket back to Bangkok for Wednesday at 563B with Sombat Tours. I am sooo happy with this company. First of all, these buses are kept in great condition with like-new reclining chairs complete with reclining foots rests. Showed a few Thai music videos and The Voice Thailand's version. Provided neck pillows and blankets (which the other bus did too but these pillows were better). Gave out an apricot juice box, bottled water, and a 2 snack buns at the beginning of the trip. Showed a short clip of the company's history and values (found it interesting). Mid trip there was a rest stop which our ticket included a meal voucher!! Really good food too - a choice between noodle soup, or rice with 2 entrees. I chose the latter. Some sort of bamboo stirfry and some curry. Exchanged comments with the lady next to me "Arroi maaak" (very delicious). Afterwords, there were refreshing towellettes, tea service. And then in the morning there was a coffee and tea service. SOO awesome. And for 100 B less than what I paid before. When I arrived at my hostel and the receptionist told me about the rooftop pool, my life was complete. I felt as if I was on cloud nine. Gosh, life can't get much better than this! WHOO hahha

My, my - long time, no talk! I am in Pai, Thailand at the moment and its a wonderful Wednesday afternoon. The sun's out with a constant cool breeze sitting at a place called Pai Country having a Leo beer (free wifi! Like many places around town). Just waiting for the last minivan at 16:30 back to Chiang Mai.
Pai is a little town 3 hours north west of Chiang Mai surrounded by nature and mountains. I've heard its the hippy chill out capital of Thailand and I see why! There are many little cafes, restaurants, tea shops, vendors selling hippy - ware, and many tattoo shops. Its a nice town to stroll around in since its not that big and a nice getaway from big cities. I rented a motor bike for 100 B + 60 B for gas (together its approx. $5.30) and I think its totally worth it. There's a lot to see around and outside Pai including the temples, waterfalls, cute rest stop areas, and a canyon. There are also hot springs but you have to pay 200 B ( approx. $6. 60) to get in, and with this being the end of my trip, I would rather not pay for it. Instead I went to the canyon (Free) which has red sand and views of the surrounding misty mountain tops. Also, visited one of the many waterfalls on the opposite side of town. Renting a bike was totally worth it because I love seeing the country side! Up to the waterfall there is a road fit for 2 lane motorbike traffic and is surrounded by rice paddies, tropical plant life lining the road, bamboo hut resorts to stay in, and tribal villages! Such a beautiful area and I loved having the freedom to drive my own motorbike!
My stay here in Pai has been short - only a 1.5 days - and the hostel I found was very affordable! Actually, this whole town I've found great bargains. My hostel was called Villa de Pai and its in town. Not hard to be though since the town is small. 80 B ( approx. $2.60) for a night stay in a mixed dorm in a bamboo hut, hot shower, lockers, and a bed with mosquito netting. On my street there were restaurants, a few bars, a tea shop, a couple of cafes, a few tattoo shops, and a Buffalo Exchange (Ha!). All very cute, and quaint places. There is a place in town that doubles as a circus school (600B lessons) and hostel for 150 B a night (including breakfast). I'm interested to see what thats like.
Many people here are foreigners but there are also Thai people taking their vacations here too since it is a nice get away from the big city. I read somewhere that everyday feels like a lazy Sunday and I would agree completely. I wish I would have been able to go on to Mae Hong Son ( 4 hours more west) but I must get back to Chiang Mai tonight to then take the night bus to Bangkok where I will arrive approx 7 am on Thursday. I have arranged a private room stay for 350 B outside the center of Bangkok, this way I can study a bit more for the GRE which I will be taking Friday afternoon. THANK goodness I'll be getting that over with. I plan to arrive back in Phetburi possibly Friday night or Saturday morning - who knows :) But I must start preparing for lessons! Now, to catch the minivan back to Chiang Mai. More about my week long trip later!
