I think mostly the stuff you’re seeing is just fans half venting & half joking around? I feel like I’ve seen most of the same content and I’m pretty sure most of it isn’t coming from an anti-5vixx sentiment. That said I can understand how it would feel for someone who doesn’t bias hakyeon – bc all of us attach a lot of emotional empathy to our biases and I think we should just acknowledge that it really hurts to hear anyone say anything bad about them whether its in jest or not….which is also exactly why I think hakyeon fans feel particularly defensive…bc even if we know its not serious…it hurts to hear these things said by the members regularly…

I agree with you about hakyeon being able to take care of himself – in the past I’ve gotten into big arguments with people who were casual fans that genuinely believed that 5vixx hated hakyeon – and I don’t ever want to mislead anyone into thinking that! He wouldn’t be where he is if he didn’t want to be, but I think its possible for fans to express their disappointment in the way hakyeon is teased without triggering the “hakyeon should just go solo” movement all over again.

I think its very complicated to be honest;; but I’m just being true to my feelings and trying not to be too mean in the process – you should feel free to do the same ! Its not a situation where one person has to be right I think

ok mad respect because I fully understand now. I think you are right about the emotional empathy part because I personally am not a Hakyeon stan but a Hongbin stan and I guess seeing so much slander towards him made me pressed so I can understand why Hakyeon stans would be too seeing that from vixx normally. I def think that VIXX are emotionally stunned. They are like middle school boys who only know how to be affectionate through insults which,,, isn’t great, I will admit that. I sometimes wish that they would show affection too and I guess I just didn’t find the humor in those jokes because they were coming for the rest of vixx, which i normally just don’t think are funny. But I get that people make them to vent out frustrations.  I completely agree, this is something that is complicated and crazy and that’s why I haven’t said anything about it for the past few weeks because I honestly really like the people that post those kinds of jokes, I think they are really funny and I didn’t, and still don’t, want to be rude to them or like,,, tell them what to post because I know I would be really pressed if someone did. But anyways, I completely understand why Hakyeon stans would need to vent about it and I hope people continue to release their emotions however they need to on here!

a. I’m not entirely sure??? It’s some weird shampoo which claims to have 3 different types of clay in it for hair that is oily at the scalp and dry at the ends??? Idk, it sounded cool so I got it.

q. what is your aesthetic?

a. A what? Honestly, I don’t think I have one.

q. when’s your favorite time of day and why?

a. I’m most productive in the middle of the day, but the mornings are probably my favorite because the world seems to have been cleansed of all the toxins of yesterday and the weather can be really nice, especially in the spring and summer. 

q. what do you like the most about the beach?

a. Probably the waves, but not the sound. I just like watching what they do.

q. what do you worry about constantly?

a. My future. Am I going to be able to handle the stress of taking care of myself? Will I have to work two jobs? Will my whole life be consumed by working just to survive? Can I be responsible enough to do chores around the house? Will I survive on my own?

q. what is a song you’ve cried to before?

a. I don’t cry because of things like that? So . . . none? I’ve never cried because of a song, and I don’t usually listen to music if I’m crying ‘cause usually I was trying to go to sleep.

q. what are some relaxing tips for your followers?

a. I am not one to ask for about advise . . . I guess do what makes you happy, don’t worry about what you have to do and put some time in your day to do what you want to do instead. 

q. what are some things that make you tear up?

a. Again . . . I don’t really cry about stuff . . . I guess I’m a selfish crier and only cry when I’m overwhelmed with things in my personal life. 

q. what is your favorite from each of the five sense?

a. I feel like I have a sensory processing disorder, but this is not diagnosed, so senses can be a very interesting things. There are a lot of bad things that come with senses, but there are some good too, so I will try to focus on that as best I can. For sight, I like watching the way people move. I like watching how animators animate people’s movement and then comparing it to real life and seeing how intricate people really move. Taste is a hard one. I guess all I really do with taste is eat and enjoy the taste of food, so I enjoy being able to know what food tastes like, I guess. For smell, I enjoy smelling people who smell good, like clean laundry or things from a shower, they are nice to smell. For touch, I like rubbery things and picking at them with my fingers.

q. what is one alternate reality you’d want to be in?

a. I want to be a human sized fairy with glittery wings and magical weather powers, thank you very much!

q. what are some troubles you face on a day to day basis?

a. Motivation is a really big one for me right now. Boy oh boy, can it please stop!

q. what is one scene of a book that’s made you really sad?

a. After Gus died in The Fault in Our Stars and the main girl goes to call him because that’s what she always does and she realizes she can’t . . . ‘cause he’s dead. Like my initial reaction was for her to call him too! So I had the same realization with her at the same time and that was interesting.

While you are worrying about whether beta readers will steal your ideas, there is a more genuine threat on the horizon.

When offered a publishing contract, please do all your research before you sign. There are a number of fakes and scammers out there, as well as good-intentioned amateurs that don’t know how to get your work to a wide audience. I won’t tell the heartbreaking stories here - there are too many.

Being published badly is worse than being never published.

It can destroy your career and your dreams.

The quick check is to google the publishing house name + scam or warning.

But, to be sure, check with these places first. They aren’t infallible (nothing is) but they can help you protect yourself. They are written and maintained by expereinced writers, editors, publishers and legal folks.

SUPER IMPORTANT PSA!

Equally important to know is that you can SELF-PUBLISH through a number of platforms these days. @ean-amhran and I used Amazon’s CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing to publish both of our books. No editors, no contracts, no finagling with publishers who want to change your materials. Just direct-to-market material.

(Granted, it means you’ve got to do a LOT more work yourself with editing and formatting and cover art, but it’s worth it to miss the headache of trying to bargain with publishing houses or avoid scams.)

I actually recommend using the Smashwords Style Guide even if you don’t use Smashwords.

It lays out how to neatly format an e-book in a wonderful step by step format, and you can get it free from Smashwords. Just leave off the couple of things that are (very obviously) Smashwords specific.

If you can’t stand dealing with the meticulous detail, then by all means hire somebody, but most people can learn to format an ebook correctly and once you’ve done it a couple of times it takes about an hour tops.

Because the redirects aren’t working for me, I’m going to assume others might have trouble with these links, so for those who need it the URL for the website to Writer Beware is: www.sfwa.org/other-resources/for-authors/writer-beware/ As stated on here: “Writer Beware is sponsored by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, with additional support from the Mystery Writers of America, the Horror Writers Association, and the American Society of Journalists and Authors.” These are not publishers’ guilds, notice; you sometimes see scammers trying to defend themselves against Writer Beware exposes by claiming that they’re “small press” or “indie” and Big Publishing is somehow out to get them - but all of those guilds are run by and for writers, to help support them and represent them in the field. It is the closest writers have to having unions, and there’s no direct competition between them (you could literally be an in any of those guilds are the same time as each other, in addition to others, and I believe a number of authors are).

Writer Beware is a wonderful resource, and I highly recommend it. It’s both a good general guide to the scams people run/red flags to watch out for (such as giving up your copyright entirely as opposed to specific rights, or being charged to publish something or have it edited, when they’re trying to act like they’re a “normal” publisher), and a frequently-updated list of the latest specific known scammers, both in “fake agents” and fake/scammy publishers categories. (The company formerly known as Publish America is one of the most famous and egregious cases, but by far not the only one)

Additionally, for SF and fantasy writers, the SFWA’s own list of qualifying markets that one can be published in as a prerequisite to be able to get into their guild (remember, it IS a profession-based guild), is a great guide to normal markets for those genres that have standard contracts that aren’t abusive or scammy, and their guidelines include some of the industry-standard minimums for “per word” etc rates, so even if some new magazine market isn’t on their list, you can tell if it’s suspiciously far outside the usual per-word or whatnot standards. (It’s likely the guidelines for Mystery Writers of America etc also would be useful in that vein) Even if you’re unpublished or don’t want to join their guild, they’re a wonderful group and resource, and I highly recommend their site and Writer Beware in particular! The other sites mentioned above, such as “Preditors and Editors” should be still valid if you Google them, and are often rec’d by Writer Beware, but Writer Beware is the one I’m most familiar with. :)

Also, you should never have to pay an agent or anyone a  “reading fee”! DO NOT PAY PEOPLE TO READ YOUR WORK!!! Run away from so-called agents that charge a reading fee! They are considered unethical in their own industry!

Also related to agents: Should you go this route and seek one, DO NOT PAY ONE DIME TO THEM upfront! A real agent only gets paid when he sells your book to a publisher! The average cut is about 10-15% of the first sale profits, if I remember right, with cuts of film and other rights maybe being more, when sold. At most, writers should only be responsible for the costs of phone calls and postage.

People don’t understand just how manufactured and exploitative that industry is. Imagine what child actors have to go through, but they have even less free time, aren’t independent, and basically property. The moment they speak out about abuse or mismanagement they’re replaced, and their lives are basically over.

There are numerous videos of members in various idol groups fainting onstage during live performances and a good percentage of the comments say things like “she so dedicated she’s trying to pull through even though she’s tired!”  “he cares for the fans so much he neglected his body!” “this shows how dedicated he is!” “They need to start taking care of themselves!” 

Like…if so many of them are in poor health, it’s probably not of their own volition.

or even worse, they actively berate or attack them for under performing or slipping up. I’ve seen K-pop fans squee about their favorite star putting on crocodile tears for some photoshoot or movie and then turn verbally abusive or get genuinely uncomfortable when footage is leaked of said star being actually frustrated or upset like a normal person in real life. 

They know it’s all manufactured garbage, they know they’re supporting a poisonous culture and industry, but they keep up their slavish devotion to it because they’re addicted to the escapism.

I apologize. I had many concerns.

I thought a lot after seeing all of you worried because of me.

I thought a lot about many things, how you would receive this, and what I should say.. After worrying about it, it’s gotten late. And as I write this post, I still have concerns and worries. That’s why I want to apologize first.

The reason I thought it would be good to do a broadcast with that person is that as a fan who has seen a lot of his sides, I mostly felt that his heart was really good. Also, I thought that he could help me learn about something I don’t know much about and show me more in a fun way. I am was aware that the perception of internet broadcasts is not all good, so after worrying about many things, I met them and talked a lot with them. After I conversed with them for a long time about many things, they were a better person than I had been worried and troubled about, so I liked them.

I came to think they were someone I could definitely trust, so I’m going to try working together with them. I’ll take this opportunity without discomfort and have fun!

I am so sorry for causing you to worry.

As I was worrying about how to convey this message to you, I thought that it would be best to upload this here, talk, and apologize for what I was sorry for, and that’s why I’ve uploaded this.

T/N: Hongbin posted this in the fancafe in regard to fans’ concerns about him streaming together with another gamer who previously made misogynistic remarks. The stream they planned was then canceled, and Hongbin deleted this post. I would like to take this moment to remind everyone to be careful what they say to or about anyone and to not quickly jump to conclusions in any situation. It is always disappointing to see drama in the fandom spread faster and with more violence than wildfire.
