Mr. Zip aka Zippy became the United States Post Office's promotional tool for their brand-new Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Code in 1963. He was basically teaching people, notably youth, that using ZIP codes will get your mail to its destination faster. Most of the in-office promotional materials and TV ads were phased out by the late 1970s but he still appeared on the unused portions of postage stamp sheets into the mid-1980s, and has made a few appearances in the last decade or so in commemoration of ZIP codes being used for fifty years.

I ordered the above from the USPS last week (heh, postage cost more than the item...) because I flipped when I saw he was available.
