Temujin Ospanov was born August 18th, 1971 as the oldest daughter of Batyr Ospanov and Misheel Ospanov. He was diagnosed with autism at the age of six when his parents had concerns over speech delays, shortly after his diagnosis he began speech therapy, and shortly after that, his mother became pregnant with his sister Chimeg.
Chimeg acted as his translator since childhood, the two had been fast friends, and Temujin stepped very easily into the “big sister” role that he needed to.
In school, Temujin excelled in topics such as biology and history, but was underdeveloped in other topics. He worked twice as hard in his classes to make up for his limited amount of speech. He had few friends, but Chimeg had many. He often found himself hanging out with her friends because it was simply easier.
By the age of ten, Temujin had begun to notice something off with him. He’d come to terms with being transgender by the age of twenty, never formally coming out to his parents. Only his sister.
He never attended college, but he did complete a course to become a certified EMT, choosing to save up to assist Chimeg in getting into an arts university, as she wanted to study painting. This was his way of giving back for the years she stuck by his side.
During a mammogram at the age of twenty two, a lump was discovered that turned out to be cancerous. His family had a history of breast cancer, and he saw this coming from a mile away. When they found it, Temujin opted for a double mastectomy— they’d found it early, there were other options, but Temujin knew this was the safest bet. By doing this, he could also alleviate the dysphoria he felt every time he looked in the mirror— a year later, he’d get a hysterectomy as well due to complications with endometriosis.
At twenty eight, the cataclysm hits. He, his sister, and a few of her friends take shelter in their apartment. It’s fine for a few weeks, and then the zoning begins. One night, Temujin is out and picked up by FEMA agents, his sister sees this, and rushes out to get him. The two are picked up and taken to a facility for testing, where they are placed in separate rooms.
Temujin is physically assaulted and mocked during this period. He tries to speak, but fear grips him. He tries to sign, but they don’t understand, he tries to use his cards. One of the agents takes them away, and uses the sharpness of the lamination along with a credit card to cut his cheeks open ear to ear, creating an ugly scar on his face. By some miracle, Temujin is able to escape. Only he cannot find his sister.
He walks until he finds the homeowners house, offering his services as a nurse to be allowed entry. He searches for his sister nightly, hoping she’s safe, but he can’t know until he finds her.
