Avi & Ari push boundaries on the bloopy bleepy “Glow Cast on Eternal”.

It’s a tight pocket, tough task making innovating electo pop. Easy to do to much or too little. "Glow Cast on Eternal" slides into the sweet spot. I'm not big on genres/labeling music but this is a bender. Last I saw Avi at the The Empty Bottle Chicago he broke it to me he was hanging up the cleats on is much acclaimed solo wunder Avi Buffalo. With only a couple LPs under his belch thought nooo too soon. But you can’t blame an artist for wanting to stretch their arms and dabble in something completely new. Another reason I respect this album, it’s daring, catchy, goofy, and dancy as hell. I’m assuming Ari Prado is the guru behind the beats, dude has a gift. Vibes row so effortlessly its easy to get lost in the smoothness. Disguised intricacy. Wizardry bleeps and bloops bring this project to life. The closing track comes very close to the mountain peak of "soft" electro production (I’m talking Postal Service/ Dntel /Discovery) I hope these guys can pump out one more banger, but if this is a 1 and done i’m cool with that.

2015 Mixtapes

First half of 2015 has been an exceptional time for music. For me the best in recent memory. As always I feel compelled to share my personal favorites with my friends, in hopes of spreading the word for these mostly underground artist. I believe there's an art to the mixtape, a story, with or without concept. A unique way to absorb sensation, and to create and capture memories. Whether that or just a shit ton of cool jams to vibe with is irrelevant, what matters is the inexplicable feeling we share when we hear the worlds greatest gift of music.

  The Snap n' sway, the squirm n' twist, the bangs flick, just a few of Jonny Pierce's signature dance moves. Pierce is a passionate vocalist. His dark romanticism transcends it's energy beyond the studio to the stage, emanating a one of kind experience. The Drums are at Bottom Lounge slashing the tally for times I’ve seen them perform. Each encounter unique and memorable. Their mantra remains, a duo confident in what they create and reflecting that during their live set. Drums unveiled their 3rd proper, “Encyclopedia” in September. I was eager to see how they would execute the synthy sometimes sci-fi moments from the latest record. Prior to showtime I scan the gear on stage, amidst the fog ambiance appears a giant box encased in wood. Later I realize it's a vintage synth with enough knobs you would need an array of tentacles to turn them all. Lights dim, crowd erupts. Out walks Jacob Graham along with the 3 other touring members of the band. No sign of Pierce. Graham fires up the synth box, opening the show with otherworldly dystopia track, “Bell Laboratories”. And heeeere's Jonny. Crowd loses it as he echos the lyrics “Get in the Car”. Seat belt fastened I'm ready to take this ride. Fascinated by how tight the backing band is, to learn the Drums catalogue and execute it to perfection is impressive. Especially with the faster and more intricate guitar riffs on the new record. Splitting the reps between the first two albums and Encyclopedia Drums play a satisfying set, with a handful of encores. Highlights being the starry “Me and the Moon”, “Let's go Surfing”, “I Hope Time Doesn't Change Him” and closing ballad “Down By The Water” From formation until now The Drums fan base has vastly grown. Since seeing them for the first time in 2010, where a handful of fans sang-along, fast forward 4 years to 2014 where everyone is now in harmony with one other thru the entire show. Although I cannot declare this the best Drums concert I’ve attended, it comes damn close.

   I saw Carey Mercer's startled face. Sneaking backstage (which is actually in the basement) as we often do at Schubas. Tip toeing down the stairs with creepy cast all over me I turn the corner open the door to the band room and pop my head in. It's a solid 10 seconds before any Frog Eyes member sees me, the first to do so is Carey. He had been splitting up the earnings from the show. “Can I help you”? He asks with a bit of nerve in his voice. I fumble “No, I mean yes”. “Just wanted to say thanks for putting us on the guest list, I am a huge fan, and you guys were fantastic tonight” Realizing I'm harmless they start to warm up to me. I ask Carey if he intends to reunite the Swan Lake project (Himself/Dan Bajer/Spencer Krugg), and if he could get Dan on the tele so I can drunkenly vomit more fan boy praise. He lifts a half smile declining both questions, tosses me a 312 and sends me on my way. Up the stairs I run into Paul Saulnier of P.S. I Love You slapping him five. We had been chatting earlier about his new record. I told him I love the song “Bad Brains” how I added it to a recent mixtape. “It's an honor” he humors me. I mention how it sounds different than their previous material, but he disagrees. Explaining how it's in the style of some if his older works, sprinkled. with a bit of new direction. Super nice guy. On stage he's a thrasher along with drummer Benjamin Nelson. Props to Paper Bag Records for successfully billing two equally emotional driven acts, that sound completely different on the spectrum of music.

   Bonus Fun: Previously in the night Julia and I had been gushing over a band we saw here a month or so back called Desert Noises. In midst of the fun we had already compassed, we see 5 dapper dudes roll in. “No fucking way, it's Desert Noises”, As if summoned by the black magic of Chicago's music scene. Boys had been passing through on their way to a Cincinnati gig, deciding to stop into a familiar spot. They are stand up guys, we grab a table as a random girl hustles over complimentary shots of Jamo. Banter and laughter ensues, I even receive some solid musician advice from their guitarist and youngest member of the band.

   Taking a page out of the Daytrotter book, Chicago based recording company “Treehouse Records” have teamed up with online music publication “Consequence of Sound” to bring you what they are calling “The Treehouse Sessions”. Treehouse Records creator Matthew Gieser says “The idea is directly intended bring competition to “Daytrotter” style live sessions” another Illinois based recording studio. I discovered the somewhat secret show via Facebook when Twin Peaks posted “Chicago: first 50 RSVPS get into a show we're taping for Consequence of Sound today at 5pm” I've seen these guys perform once before, but it was in a crappy venue with an obstructed view. Thought this would be a rad chance to really soak up their sound in an intimate setting. The studio is slightly hidden on Chicago's west side between Diversy and Fullerton, and shares a space with what looks like a kickboxing gym. The outside of the building is misleading, as if it could be an abandoned elementary school. Inside it's a different story. The studio shines with a modern decor glow. There is an antique jukebox in mint condition, a life size Elvis mannequin, neon signs, and a giant shark “autographed by all who have recorded here” protruding from the wall. It's a comfortable laid back vibe as the attendees mosey around and relax on the various pieces of furniture spread through the 5,000 sf venue. Leg over thigh I sit awaiting the performance when an excited fan yells “They're ready to play! Twin Peaks is starting!”. The 30 or so of us who showed up leak into the room where CoS cameras are stet up and ready to shoot. I get a front row seat (standing of course) to see these young rockers do their thing. They start with a couple singles which they play twice through for “Treehouse Sessions” purposes, I don't mind at all as they are solid tracks that sound unique each run. I find uniqueness to be a theme throughout TP set. Each of the four guys shred their instruments as though they are all playing different individual songs, yet it somehow comes together in rock harmony. Cadien, Clay, & Jack split vocals as Connor lays down the beats. Taking request from the audience the guys play a fulfilling set, sometimes leaving their area to jam out with the crowd. Listening to their records I hear a band who is still trying to find their identity, but having fun while on the quest. Newest record “Wild Onion” is a novel of tracks most good, some great, portraying Twin Peaks as a chameleon of band who can switch up their sound, and still make it sound like they know what they're doing. These dudes are dabbling in different genres and it's totally OK. Fortunate to live in a city that produces such talent.
