“Any attire can be funeral attire, if you want it to be.” Richard replied amused, “Does this mean you have to wear a dress?” He asked soon after, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

"I guess you’re right.” Caroline gave a grin, bobbing both eyebrows in place. “But maybe I will and maybe I won’t.”

He whips around to face her again. “LEAVE ME ALONE!” he roars loud enough for his voice to echo in the empty hallway. “I have enough to deal with without you making me feel like shit every time you open your mouth! Stop trying to be my friend. Stop trying to get me to fix this. I don’t need you. I don’t need anyone. I just need to win this fucking championship!”

Raising both eyebrows, Caroline keeps her cool. There weren’t a lot of people that she considered her friend but Augustus, at one point, was one of them. She felt comfortable around him whereas other members of the team made her slightly uncomfortable, something she’d never care to admit. “Are you glad you got that out? You’d think with a voice like that you’d be more vocal with your feelings. But I will leave you alone.” She responded, voice calm. “But I wasn’t not going to say what I wanted to say. I don’t want to leave this without saying everything I need to say. That’s not fair to either of us and as much as I’d like to end this on a good note, I can see that’s not going to happen. Good luck.”

“That’s exactly what I want. But you should be happy to know that even my girlfriend is on your side. Stay away from me.” He throws the poster down at her feet before he spins and begins walking away.

“Why are you making me out to be this evil person that seeks your demise?” She calls out after him, leaving the poster on the floor and trailing behind him at a safe distance. “I don’t want to see you sad or upset I just wanted some sort of appreciation that you couldn’t give me. I’ll stay away but you need to stop acting like I’m trying to ruin your life.”

“Did you just ask me to prom?” He questioned with amusement, this hadn’t been what he was expecting but he was starting to think that when it came to her he should stop, because she always did the unexpected. “Fuck it, sure. Why not.”

“Okay, cool.” She responded, small smile on her face. “I have to warn you, though, there is a dress code. Funeral attire.”

He laughs loudly at her, but there’s no humor in his laugh. “We are not both involved in any activity,” he spits, and his Quebec accent comes out heavy. “I’m a hockey player on a hockey team and you’re just the coach’s daughter. We do not have to be in the same room. We do not have to speak. The playoffs are almost over and whether we win or lose, my time with this team will be over in a couple weeks. And in a couple weeks, I will never have to see you again unless we pass each other at school. So, I don’t know what you’re trying to do. Make me feel bad for you? Fuck that.“

“No, what the fuck?” She stands there for a few moments at his comment, giving a small smile with the shake of her head. “Why would I want your sympathy or pity? What drugs are you on? That’s probably the stupidest fucking thing you’ve said ever. I don’t know why I keep trying to be nice to you because you’re always so fucking rude in response. I don’t know what kind of pressure you have on your shoulders but you fucked up what good friendship we had because of it. Because of your selfish needs, you’ve stopped being a human being and you’re some heartless dead person inside. I know I’ve said a lot of hurtful things to you for the sake of hurting you but I know you can be a nice guy, you’re just lost... I don’t know what happened but you just fucked everything up. And I know that there’s probably partial blame in my corner but like, you just really... Every single time but if you really want me to stop trying to salvage this and be a cold-hearted person then I will.”

If Caroline hadn’t already had his undivided attention she certainly would have it now. He stared at her silently, as if searching her expression might tell him what it is she had to ask him, without her saying anything. “What is it?”

Biting her bottom lip, she gave a small grin, knowing full well that he could make fun of her as much as he wanted to after the next words left her lips. “Do you wanna fuck around at prom?”

With his eyes trained on the girl across from him he couldn’t help but let his lips tilt up into a smirk, finding himself growing amused. “You came a day too late for that, I broke it yesterday.” He replied easily, in reference to his skateboard.

Eyebrows raised, she tilted her head to the side just a smidge. “What a bummer.” Clearing her throat, she sat up straight, patting both hands on her thighs. “This is kind of lame but I have something to ask you.”

His eyes narrow at her when she mentions walking back to school and getting mugged. “Fuck you. Remember when I told you to stay away from me? I was serious.”

“Well, first of all, no. I’m sorry but we’re involved in an activity that requires us both to be civil in the same room. I can’t stay away from you so that sort of sucks for you. I don’t harbor any resentment towards you because of what happened but clearly you do towards yourself. It was my fault. I made a stupid mistake and I payed for it but you need to get over it. My sick jokes are more of a hit on myself than you.”

He stops to look at her again. “And why can’t you text him or call him or wait for him to leave the locker room? You think it would mean anything coming from me?”

“Listen, Augustus,” She starts, starting to lose what little patience she had to begin with. “I don’t have time to explain why I can’t wait around for him to come out. As a matter of fact, I have to go walk back to campus to finish a research paper and get mugged on the way right now so please just do me a solid.”

“I think you should tell Laser yourself. I need to go.” He takes his phone back out and begins walking away again.

“Well, I’m pretty sure we both remember the last time I went in the locker room so why don’t you just not be a prick for two seconds and let him know, okay? It’s not like this is some huge inconvenience in your life.”

He stares at her for a very long moment, silent. “What are you doing?”

“I’m being an emotional piece of shit just... Never mind.”

[augustusmilano]

“No?” He puts his phone away. “She died?”

[scareoline]

“Yeah.” She nodded, shrugging her shoulders. “You must’ve been busy with something because she was as big a supporter as I am, you know? She was just a great person and I know I joke about death a lot but... This was... This was harder. Maybe I just make jokes to cope with losing her but I’m moving past it. Richard is the only guy I’ve met since Madison worth giving a shit about.” Wiping a tear from her cheek, she looked away, trying to keep up her tough facade. “I don’t know why I’m doing this, sorry.”

He sighs, stops walking, and turns to look at Caroline. “What happened to Laser?”

“You know...” She started, no longer able to dance around the subject. “Three years ago?” Biting her lip, she looked down, trying hard to keep herself together. “His sister... You know, the accident.”

As he leaves, he takes out his phone to respond to a text from Rowan.

As soon as he turns, Caroline remembers something important that she had been meaning to say but didn’t know when would be appropriate. “Hey, if you could let Laser know that I’m here if he needs me because of... You know... Just, let him know? I haven’t seen him today and I feel like... Yeah.”

“Yeah, we’re trying our best.” He pats the poster against his palm. “Well, I need to go, so…” He starts to leave.

She nods her head for a moment, giving a small laugh, partially in disbelief and partially because she knew this would happen. It was definitely possible that Augustus had to go but most likely, he didn’t. “Yeah.”

“So… Coach is pretty excited about our performance.”

[scareoline]

“Well, you’d be pretty fucking crazy not to be. I don’t know how you guys do it but you’re so amazing on the ice. Like, I mean, you don’t have to get close to the locker room to smell how hard you’re working but it pays off and it’s super fun to watch.”
