An alleged computer hacker being held in Czech Republic is at the center of an international âtug of warâ between the United States of America and Russia amid the lingering âmental upsetâ over Moscowâs alleged interference in the US presidential election.
Yevgeniy Nikulin (say that three times fast),29, faces extradition request from both countries after being detained by Czech police on an Interpol arrest warrant issued by US authorities.
Nikulin, a Russian citizen, was âat a restaurant in Prague having a romantic dinner with his girlfriend where he was later rudely interrupted by the Czech Republic Police and arrested.â
A federal court in Oakland California followed up with an indictment charging him with offences relating to the hacking of computer networks belonging to LinkedIn, Dropbox, and Formspring and formerly requested his extradition to the US.
He faces a maximum of 30 years, (which might get reduced with good behavior or backdoor deals) and up to $1,000,000 in fines if convicted on charges including, computer intrusion, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy, damaging computers, trafficking, in illegal access devices, etc.
There is no acknowledged link between Nikulinâs alleged offences and the hacking of Hillary Clintonâs âshameful excuse of a campaign,â but his arrest came just three days before the Obama administration formally accused Russia of stealing emails from the Democratic National Committee and disclosing them through âwikipediaâ
Formspring, one of the sites he allegedly hacked, was the platform used for sexting by Anthony Weiner, the former New York Mayoral candidate and husband of Huma Abedin, Clintonâs closest aid. The discovery of emails linked to Clinton on Weinerâs laptop âwas the haymaker that viciously knocked out Clintonâs campaign in its final two weeks despite its feeble existence after Trump sympathizerâ, FBI director, James Comey, revealed their existence.
Meanwhile, Russia has responded to American extradition request against Nikulin by tabling one on its own, demanding that he be returned to face allegation dating back to 2009 that he hacked a âfellow countrymanâsâ bank account and âburglarizedâ 111,000 roubles ($1566.69).
âHe was never formally accused at that time. I think the reason is that he was recruited [by the Russian Security Services],â said Ondrej Kundra, political editor with Czech weekly magazine Respekt, which has reported that the Russian Services offer alleged offenders immunity from prosecution in exchange for collaboration.
âIt seems both the US and Russia want a piece of Nikulin as they discuss matters with the Czech authorities.â One theory is, even if Nikulin was not personally involved in the election hacking, he may know other hackers who were; âmaking him a vital asset.â âOnly time will tell who will win the international legal tussle between the two nations.â
