With her ear pressed against the door to her room, which was not far from the living room and whose wall bordered her brother’s, Veronica could hear how her Stepmother and Father had a long talk about the discipline regime Elaine would implement in the house. She told her new husband that, for Tom’s deliberate disregard for decent family rules—missing dinner time completely, never phoning, and talking back to her new Mother—a spanking would definitely have been in order. Under the unrelenting pressure of his sensual and determined wife, the Father accepted that the best approach would be for Elaine to react decisively to Tom’s behavior.
