She groaned and shook her head. “Don’t fight me on this! You probably ain’t gonna make it in the city if you aren’t careful.” One of her hands released his arm while the other held tight and started dragging him along. She looked over her shoulder as she hurried him onto the train before it pulled away from the station.
“I don’t know.much of what’s going on but I got a warning about someone. Went to meet a contact. The whole place was like it was straight out a saw film or something… I’d say more but I’d rather wait till we get to my apartment.”
“You went there?” Will whispered, leaning in so he wasn’t overheard. “The underpass?” Will frowned a moment and then leaned back with a suspicious frown. “How did you know I lived there?”
“Thing is, I didn’t go to the overpass for you. Didn’t know that was your hovel till I found a picture… A weird one. It was happenstance.” She dug the picture out of her bag, showing it to him. “This… Is pretty clearly you, right?”
Will’s eyes flicked between the picture and the woman’s face. “No. You had no right.” He snatched at the picture and tore it in half. “That’s the past.”
She snatched the fragments back from him and glared at him. “Well your fucking past is coming to fuck up my present.” She stuffed them back into her bag and rubbed her temples. Her eyes were flickering and sparking again.
This had only just started and Scarlett could feel the spikes of frustation mounting. “We can talk about this later… I realize I don’t even fucking know your name.”
“Why do you need to know? I’m just a random hobo you can’t stand, aren’t I? You blamed me for yesterday and now you’re blaming me for a serial killer.” Will could feel the stress and frustration radiate from her like a beacon. His chest was tying in knots. His heart was racing like a jackhammer.
“I’m NOT blaming you!” She snapped, getting just a hair louder than she wanted. She took a deep breath, bringing her voice back down and calculating her words. “Shut it. It isn’t blame. It’s correlation.”
She ran a hand through her hair, airing it out and cooling herself down. She stood up, knowing the train would be coming to a stop shortly, and grabbed him by the arm again. “My apartment is a block from the station, we need to make it quick.”
Will bolted out of the train with his arm trapped in her firm grip. He didn’t even know this woman’s name and she was doing her best to get herself killed for him. Poor woman didn’t understand the kind of monster Hannibal is.
But then again, perhaps she did? Will could taste the bitter pang of fear. Horror and disgust melded into one gravelly groan that echoed through his ears. Panic like alarms behind Will’s eyes.
This woman knew what Hannibal could be like. But certainly not the full extent. “Why help me, then?”
“Two reasons…” She huffed out, hightailing it to her apartment and making sure not to go too fast for him. “The first is that you can probably help me deal with the guy… Secondly… Well I wouldn’t be any kind of hero if I left you to die..”
That was something that always weighed on her heavy. She’s a hero, however reluctant she was at times. She didn’t just get to not save people or at least try and help. She had to. She was obligated. She couldn’t let people suffer knowing she could have done something about it. That goes for letting this guy go to his own devices.
She dragged him up 6 floors of fire escape before getting to the window of her apartment and sliding it open. “Hurry up, come in.”
Will obeyed for the simple fact that if he left her now, Hannibal would take his chance. Not against Will but against Scarlett. If Hannibal was following him and hadn’t been lost in the subway, he would target Scarlett first.
Will almost cried with relief at the sudden warmth stepping into the apartment gave him.
Scarlett sighed, locking the window behind them and drawing the blinds. “Make yourself comfortable, we’re gonna be here awhile.” She kicked off her shoes and walked to the kitchen.
Her apartment was a fair bit of a mess. Books and news papers strewn about the floor and table. A laptop stuck with dozens of sticky notes say among the pile. Dead plants and dusty half burned candles sat around the space. It just looked dark and generally lonely.
“I’m Scarlett, by the way.” She half shouted from the kitchen, heading something on the stove. “Feel like names are in order now.”
Will took the opportunity to finally unburden himself of his rucksack and multiple layers of coats and sweaters. It took a good five minutes before he was finally down to a mismatched and poorly sized plaid shirt and jeans. Like this, it was easy to see the malnutrition.
He stood awkwardly in the middle of the room, soaking in the warmth and letting it sink into his bones. “Will. I’m Will.”
“Good to finally know your name Will… Go on and sit. I’m heating up some leftovers.” She said, not turning her attention away from the stove. She was in the kitchen another few minutes before she brought out two bowls of soup and some bottles of soda tucked under her arms.
“I assume you’re hungry. So here.” She set one down on the table before sitting on the couch to start eat.
Will sat at the edge of the couch as if fearing that he’d contaminate it. “Thank you.” He did his best not to wolf his food down, eating the soup one spoonful at a time. But he truly did down the drink. He’d not had so much drink or sugar all at once in so long. He was surprised he was still alive.
Once he was finished, he disappeared into the back of the couch.
Scarlett sighed as she downed the food. She hadn’t even realized how hungry she was after how long a day it’d been. She looked over at him and picked up her laptop powering it up. “So… Will. What can you tell me about the guy? The one who… Is creative with his murder.”
Will glanced over at her and gave a sorrowful smile. “He went by Doctor Lecter last I knew him. I’m not sure he’d keep the same name now, except to taunt me.” He scratched his overgrown beard. “He thrives on suffering. Everyone is a pig to him until they show potential to be more.” Will had shown potential…
“Doctor Lector…” She let out a soft hum before typing the name into the search bar. Old records from a few old asylums popping up, seemingly too old to be connected to the current situation but anything was possible here. “Sounds like a bit of a pompous prick..”
“He was-is. But he knew how to make people feel more than that. You’d give him anything just to seek his approval.” Will spoke from his own experience. He’d volunteered to continue the experiments when Hannibal threatened to stop them. Even through the agony and the hate, Will let the experiments endure. Just for Hannibal’s approval. Just to feel worth something again.
“So it’s more like the charismatic cult leader type…” She started opening links and skimming through them, mentally taking notes of appearance and attitude. “How… How old are you? If you don’t mind my asking.”
Will shrugged and picked up one of the books that were strewn over the place. “It’s rude to ask a lady her age,” he said, tone dry.
“It’s a good thing I ain’t known for my manners then.” She let out a dry chuckle as she kept going with her research online. She seemed to be typing pretty furiously for a little while, lost in her own work.
Will sat in silence just enjoying the warmth soaking through his bones. But now he was in an enclosed space, he became acutely aware of a stench definitely coming from him.
“Do you have a bath? Or shower?” The smell thing worked well enough for him before, but now Hannibal knew his cover, he’d just follow his nose through the homeless population.
“Yeah, follow me.” She stood up, putting the latop back on the table before heading down the small hallway. She opened the hall closet, putting out a few towels for him before opening the bathroom door. “I might have some extra clothes for you buried in the closet with my ex’s shit…”
After dropping the towels on the counter she went to her bedroom, sighing deeply before before forcing herself to dig for the box in her messy closet.
Will enjoyed a long soak in the bath. He used what he could find to make himself clean and presentable. It took longer than he cared to admit trimming away his mess of a beard until he looked less homeless and more hipster. Some things couldn’t be helped, he thought to himself.
When he stepped out in only his towel, he smelled of lavender soap and apple shampoo - from gift sets, he assumed. His body was covered in scars that had long since healed, except for the brutal marks of talons along his chest and marks of impalement over his back. He looked as if he’d been mounted on antlers. Both fresh collections had clearly been repeatedly opened.
Scarlett had found the box in the middle of his bath. Pleanty of aggravating and painful memories of the guy flooding back to her. A story for another time she thought. She pulled out a few of the outfits he’d left behind before quickly shoving the box back in and covering it.
She composed herself before stepping out with the clothes for him. She choked a little bit when she saw him all cleaned up and in just a towel. She seemed to almost flush. Fuck. He was actually really handsome… She looked away, holding the clothes out in his direction. “I don’t know if they’ll fit but they’re good enough.” It was just a simple blue button up and some nice black jeans.
The flush didn’t go unnoticed, but for Scarlett’s sake Will didn’t say a word about it. He simply smiled. He’d not felt attractive in many, many years.
He took the handful of clothes and stuffed them under his arm. “Anything would be better than what I’d been wearing before. Small mercies I’m not one of those homeless men who smell of piss.”
He disappeared again, only returning when he was fully changed.
Scarlett went back to her room, taking a second to change into some sleep clothes and get some of the smell of death off of her. Just a tank top and some of the shorts, her hair pulled back and her contacts out. She went back to the couch, picking up her glasses before getting back to work.
"I don't have any PJs for you, save for one pair of sweats I stole from him." She was typing more and more as she kept up her research. "And help yourself to my food if you're hungry. Consider this a partnership now."

"It's a good thing I ain't known for my manners then." She let out a dry chuckle as she kept going with her research online. She seemed to be typing pretty furiously for a little while, lost in her own work.

"Two reasons..." She huffed out, hightailing it to her apartment and making sure not to go too fast for him. "The first is that you can probably help me deal with the guy... Secondly... Well I wouldn't be any kind of hero if I left you to die.."
That was something that always weighed on her heavy. She's a hero, however reluctant she was at times. She didn't just get to not save people or at least try and help. She had to. She was obligated. She couldn't let people suffer knowing she could have done something about it. That goes for letting this guy go to his own devices.
She dragged him up 6 floors of fire escape before getting to the window of her apartment and sliding it open. "Hurry up, come in."

This probably wasn’t the best spot to hide but they needed a moment to regroup and assess what the hell they were going to do next. There they were, trapped in a closet with a handful of the undead wandering out in the room ahead of them, and with 0 rounds in their magazines.
“Too many of em out there… And all I’ve got is a bloody knife…”
Derek checked his own gun. 12 rounds was all he had left as well. They were i a tight position. The grunts and groans outside where getting louder meaning they were running out of time. Time for plan B.
“Here, you take the gun I’ll take the knife.“ Derek turn the safety on and handed it over to the other. “My body is immune to the virus so taking bite and scratches won’t effect me.“ This wasn’t ideal but it was the best they could do. He’d rather mutate then let her be over run but zombies.
“If worse comes to worse you run and I’ll meet up with you at control.“ Dee’s green eye glowed slightly in the dark hinting that the blood and adrenaline was activating something primal in him. A mutation from stress maybe close on its way. If that was the case he would rather be here with the zombies then back with the others.
She nodded, trying to shift around and hand him her knife. 12 rounds might be enough to get them out of there and out of this cramped closet. She was… Beyond uncomfortable. “Well, I’d rather you didn’t get left behind here. Especially since that knife is important to me.” There was a chuckle there.
“Immune or not, they can still tear you apart out there. So careful.” She squirmed around the closet before finally getting her hand on the door knob. “Count of 3. 1…2…”
As soon as she said three, the door was swung open, her neary falling flat on her face. Luckily she caught herself on the door, shooting the closest monster in the head as soon as she was steadied.
He sighed forgetting the other had never experience on of his mutation. Dee won’t die very easily and these creature will defiantly not be the cause of it especially if a mutation happens.
Once release from the closet, Dee went into action. With great speed, He was able to stop a few by plunging the knife into their skulls. He was trained well in fighting with knife and his inhuman abilities made it easy to dodge attacks so far. He would occasionally glance over in the other’s direction to make sure she was still doing okay. The more zombies he killed the less ammo she would have to use. With a deep growl he went after another zombie.
Scarlett tried her damndest to keep on his heels and keep up. She didn't want to fall too far behind. The was careful with her shots, only shooting if there was a monster in her immediate range.
Every shot she counted down in her head. 11, 10, 9 and she was making progress to the door. 8, 7, 6, 5. Too many got too close and she was only half way there.

Scarlett at some point started walking quicker. Then started to jog. Then run. The gravity of what she just left behind started to actually hit her. That was a fucking grisly scene of death and whoever did it? They’re still walking around free as a bird. Probably trying to find that guy if that picture meant anything. God she hoped he was still alive.
She made her way back to the subway station, taking a moment to call in the disaster scene from a pay phone in the station. She kept it vauge on what she saw and hung up as soon as the train got there. “Fuck… Things are going to get a lot more complicated from here..”
Will went to the subway and tried begging for money from strangers. He needed to lose Dr Lecter and that was the one place Hannibal wouldn’t go. If only Will had the money.
Just as she was getting ready to board the train, she caught glimpse of the same beanie she’d seen the guy in when she’d seen him earlier today. She rushed right over to him and pulled him up from where he sat. “You need to come with me, now.”
Will yelped as he was dragged up to his feet. Tugging his hand away, he tried to see his attacker’s face. He immediately scowled when he saw Scarlett. “You again? Look, I’m a bit busy right now. I don’t have time for you to play hot and cold.”
She groaned and shook her head. “Don’t fight me on this!
