I chose these two terms because that’s how I feel in my chosen space. Throughout this semester, Kendall Hall was my place to go. I felt relaxed, free and as if I could escape my own stress. Like @mackdoo I also felt as if I could separate my problems from my space and become comfortable. In my space I felt as if I could do anything and simply listen to music, read a book, or look around admiring my surrounding.

However, like @scanda1humn220 mentioned, to this person their space was “Home away from home” and it constantly represents freedom to myself. Although there are different ways to feel free far from home, these spaces give us a sense of freedom, comfort as if I didn’t have to ask anyone for anything or permission to look around. This space was well transited from time to time, but everyone would respect whoever was in that space at the time.

Together escape and freedom match each other because they show how even though it is not at home, one can still feel as if they need to escape from places in our case as students, stress. At our age and in college, we tend to have too much going on in our lives and often we just need to remove ourselves from a hectic environment and find a place that makes us feel at peace. That is what my space represented, home away from home.

I find my space to be a good place to go if I want to escape the stresses in my life. If I am worrying about school or anything else I am able to walk across the lawn separating our apartments, and spend time with my closest friends. We listen to music and watch shows on Netflix. Post 6-Keyword

Freedom

Since my space is outside, I chose “freedom” as a representation of my location because nature itself is free. During seasons, nature changes and the leaves begin to fall, rain begins or the sun simply shines on the flowers. My space always represented relaxation to me, being there gave me peace and made me forget about my problems at times.

Freedom, in this space gave me the opportunity to feel liberty as to what I did in that place. If I wanted to use it as a place to study, listen to music or even have lunch, this place never failed me. Except when it was raining, of course. However, on sunny days; the birds, squirrels and the wind were a good companion.

When we spoke about Grosz’s article, freedom was brought up. Here freedom represented freedom from political constraint. Also it represented the ability to choose and I deliberately chose my space because I felt comfortable, relaxed and happy in my space. As for Bachelard’s article on “Corners” contemplation and comfort were some of the terms mentioned. I feel as if they connect with my space because I meditated in my space, I would simply zone out in my space. The comfort level increased when the weather was cooperating. Yet overall this space made me feel free, like nothing else mattered.

I chose @Scanada1humn220’s photographs because they were reflecting the opposite of my space, my space looked calm but it was loud in reality. Here the pond seemed more relaxing, as if nothing was making noise, just a breeze perhaps or the breathing of the individual taking the pictures. The pond itself did a fine job in expressing serenity, relaxation and perhaps a pattern of a daily routine. Having that view, is a perfect opportunity to get lost in the surroundings.

As for @branerhumn220’s images, the idea of having the empty space where the bridge once was interesting. Although the space itself looks calm, at some point in the semester this area was filled with students during passing periods. It’s nice to see that a place like this is still seen as relaxing, even with the water going by and the leaves cracking under one’s shoes. Nature only changes but a change is better with time.

The posts from @katiehumn220 were different from my chosen space, yet the unlike paths in between the roses gave it a little twist. Its as if nature, itself being life; contrasts with what we as humans have to go through. At times we get stuck and it is up to us which way to go and continue he path in order to find the end or reach something, a goal perhaps. Maybe this wasn’t what @katiehumn220 got from it, but to me a path reveals a lot more than just dirt or concrete.

I reblogged @sunthumn220 @rebishumn220 and @tmahmood10-Traveling and Watching

The video that @sunthumn220 uploaded was exactly from the space I have been observing all semester, just on a slightly different angle. I was not able to upload my video however I did notice how @sunthumn220 agreed that this space was itself beautiful. I have never mentioned it myself but the idea that Kendall Hall is made out of bricks makes that building that much more interesting. The light from that space is always exquisite, the breeze feels good, not too much not too little. Since all the buildings alternate in shape, form and texture; having Kendall Hall be brick and almost in the middle of campus makes it more interesting. Although it is fall and there should be leaves everywhere, this place is well cleaned up, except for the side of the building, and there one can see the beautiful leaves changing color.

Since @rebishumn220 uploaded a video while moving and this made the space more captivating. Since the location is a well transited space, the noise was prevalent. The video was taken in downtown Chico and here the video shows cars driving by, the shops, buildings being constructed, trees, as well as a homeless man walking. The variety of what is going on all at once is an easy way to say that one must be alert in order to experience all of this at first hand and not be concentrated on something else or simply zoned out. It was interesting how @rebishumn220 found this space “quiet and calm” when it seemed like there was a lot more going on.

As for @tmahmood10- Traveling and Watching, I found it interesting how these three men were playing their trickery game. These same guys often practice their trickery by Kendall Hall and I often find myself paying more attention to them as if I am going to learn how to do it by watching. They spend hours attempting and even if they mess up, they try again; part of practicing I suppose. Practice makes perfect. It is nice to see that in the video people take the time to notice these things, something different and out of the ordinary. If there was noise around, one can block it all and just focus on observing the game; at least I do. I get lost in it, until one guy drops whatever they are practicing their trickery with.

Traveling and Watching

I was traveling in the Holt building for my next class. I saw three guys were playing a tricky game, which was very interesting to me. As I was recording in the movie people were walking and watching this tricky and interesting game on the other side some other people were sitting on the side watching and enjoying the game.

(tumblr would not let me upload the whole video) But my video is footage of downtown Chico and the area surrounding my space of which it is located. I feel my video portrays downtown well and shows what goes on during a typical day. It shows cars driving by, all the shops, construction, beautiful trees, as well as a homeless man walking in front of me, which may be inappropriate to say but there is a good amount of homeless people who spend a lot of time in downtown. It shows that downtown is not busy 24/7 compared to downtown in let’s say L.A., because people are attending class and working. By filming this I also noticed how it was actually pretty quiet and calm

As I walked through the campus as I usually do, I found myself outside of Kendall Hall. The gentle, sloping curves of the arches and domed roof were hit with the warm fall light hit the bricks in just the right way to make everything seem warmer even though the temperature would have you thinking otherwise. At this moment I noticed how everything had come together in the right moment and time; the cool breeze hitting the skin, while the warm bricks seemed oddly comforting and the hustle and bustle of the campus providing a familiar sound in the background and I was brought back to why I chose Chico. The campus Chico state resides on is one of the more beautiful that I have seen. While there are other flashier campuses, Chico’s is slightly understated while remaining distinct and bold. The alternating building styles from cold metal and glass to the warmer brick and stone gives the campus dynamic and the forest that surrounds us is simply breath taking in fall. It allows you to feel more connected to the campus and the community as a whole. Kendall Hall will always be a beautiful building that no other campus has, and it serves as a catalyst to bring student to come learn for years and years to come.

The path of life

(I couldn't upload the video)Usually this path is less transited, but today, it was busy. While I walked towards my space, I came across people, some walking alone, others in a group. Those who were walking alone had their cell phones out either texting or listening to music, and those in group were being loud talking to each other. The background was loud as well, the construction work being done at the front of Kendall Hall continues, the birds were chirping and the sound of everyone’s shoes was present. Some of the leaves being stepped on would give a crackling sound but the voices were louder. There was sun at one point, and soon it was all shade. Once I got to my space and sat down by the tree to the left of Kendall Hall, the tree that has its roots out, and a bench like roundabout, the noise seemed to vanish. Then, the only sound present was that of construction but not of people talking or walking past me. This place became as peaceful as I once remembered it. The birds continued to chirp, the squirrels climbed up and down trees and life simply continued. The time in my space was precious.

Post 3 Response- Mapping

I chose these spaces because they were set up in an interesting way. The way breahumn220 “X Marks the Spot” drew the map made it seem like an adventurous space. It was until after I read the caption that I noticed it was simply a room located inside a home. The way breahumn220 described the other places around the room, was remarkable because it represented what the journey to get to the X(the bed)  would be. By signaling other areas of the house as islands made it creative and different. However, considering the caption/description, I think breahumn220 did a fine job in expressing those ideas into the map created.

As for virginiatieshumni “Bird’s eye view” I felt like this map related to mine. The fact that there were more green areas, shade below the trees and bushes in a line made it more applicable to my space. The image shows a peaceful environment. Before reading the caption, I caught myself looking around the buildings and how the trees were nicely placed in order to give an open space for some grass. The caption was less descriptive than I expected, virginiatieshumn did not mentioned where the building was or what side considering there were three. The caption mentioned how “there’s always something going on there” but what is that something? If this question was answered, the image would be more complete. As if it’s explaining if the place is peaceful, loud, if there are people being annoying or simply people enjoying nature. The idea is to show what happens around the space and within the space being observed but to my understanding, this piece lacked that perspective. I simply liked the map and what was the set up.

Furthermore, for mvanghumn220 “Seeing from Above” I liked how the trees and the grass were incorporated in the drawing and it wasn’t just a plain site or description. However, what was the space that mvanghumn220 has been observing? Is it every angle of the Plaza? I liked how the grass and trees were shown, the idea of having that sidewalk made the map seem less busy, which gave it a good aspect. I liked how this place seems peaceful, less populated but perhaps it’s crowded with people during the day.

Overall these pieces were well drawn out and the descriptions mentioned in each caption was exactly what each of these people wanted the viewers to know. The fact that these images contained trees or abstract perspectives made my piece more relatable. These spaces portray peace and these people being calm while they observe their space.

X Marks the Spot.

For my space, I chose to produce a map in the form of a treasure map. Although the original and plain outline of my room exists within it, I felt as though creating an outline in this way might better present to the audience the feeling or atmosphere presented by the space that—from the allotted, general bird’s-eye view—may not otherwise be conveyed. In short, there is very little that occurs in my room by itself. As depicted, in it resides a simple bed, desk, and chair. To me, it provides a solitary area wherein I can escape from my surroundings and relax. By rendering it within the form of a treasure map, the juxtaposition of the simplicity of my space contrasts with that of the chaos of the surrounding area. The other areas of the apartment (e.g. the bathroom, the kitchen, etc.) are presented in the forms of islands because they’re unincorporated in the space that I chose to observe—they’re separate entities that, whilst they reside in the surrounding area, don’t necessarily pertain to my space. The “x” on the map leads to the bed because it serves in the primary purpose of the room: to relax, and I felt as though this was the best method to convey that to the audience.

Bird’s eye view of my space.

Konkow Hall House 1 is significant in my area because it’s where i live and my space is right behind my room. I consider the field next to it because there’s always something going on there. Also there’s a fence covered in vines that separates my space from the field. Up would be from the vent  on the bottom left in the grass to the sidewalk approaching the bike racks. This view shows all the trees and brush where the animals hide and whatnot.
