Rose’s smile faded. “Are you traveling on your own?”
“In the other universe?” she bit her lip. “See, we’ve been working on this dimensional cannon thing, and I’ve been lookin’ for you for ages. The stars were goin’ out and then they weren’t and the cannon stopped being able to travel between universes. So I’ve been in this universe, hopping around your timeline and tryin’ to find you.”
“Oh good! I thought maybe you hadn’t gone to the parallel universe yet. Where’s my hand? Well, the metacrisis clone that grew from my hand.” he asked with a grin, honestly hoping that it was still breathing, and that maybe it had stayed in the other universe. It was half Donna, which he thought was brilliant, but it may not have suited Rose.
“Yeah, I’m sort of on my own. Still watching over Katie, but she’s not exactly a companion. She can’t come with me when I need to go work on things… besides, I’ve found it’s better to work alone.” There was less to feel guilty about, essentially. He’d lost so many of them, whether they had set foot in the TARDIS or not. At least his companions had the chance to leave him. Sometimes.
Rose frowned. "Who? Doctor, your hand's on your arm," she said, tongue between her teeth.
"Oh... well, who's Katie?" There was a strange sort of tingling sensation in her head, the feeling that she was missing something--something important--but she shook her head slightly when the Doctor continued. "What about needing a hand to hold? I don't think you should be alone," she added softly.
But what if he wanted to be on his own? What if he had moved on, what if Rose was nothing more than a fond memory from a distant past? The thought of the Doctor turning her away after all of her work to find him again... well, it hurt.
I’ve missed you so much!
How are you doing?
“Well, you know me! I’m always all right, but I’m all the more better for seeing you! How are you here? I mean, you’re supposed to-” he trailed off. He’d discovered that he was on an alternate timeline, so maybe Rose was too. Maybe she hadn’t left her own Doctor yet… maybe she wouldn’t.
Rose's smile faded. "Are you traveling on your own?"
"In the other universe?" she bit her lip. "See, we've been working on this dimensional cannon thing, and I've been lookin' for you for ages. Doctor!
Back again.
I just want to be a million miles away from here. I’m counting down the days.
Rose Tyler: Am I ever going to see you again? The Doctor: You can’t. Rose Tyler: What are you going to do? The Doctor: I’ve got the TARDIS. Same old life. The last of the Time Lords. Rose Tyler: On your own?
