CHOOSE THE RIGHT LIVING COMPOSITION.

In living compositions, the back panel can be used as an important furnishing element, able to redesign new balance within the living area. A decorative Forest Oak back panel provides a strong feature in the composition shown in the photo to the right, housing a suspended modular element (with doors and top in Titanium Grey polished glass) and a series of lacquered shelves in different sizes.

A different structure is required for the composition of the photo to the left, marked by a back panel and decorative top in Morello Larch and different-sized wall unit modules (with decorative Morello Larchdoors and glossy Linen lacquered open units). By choosing a glossy lacquered Ivory back panel, the scenic effect undergoes a major change: modules with luminous bases and doors in decorative Khaki Oak create a harmonious, light, warm ensemble.

We go for a change in genre with the composition proposed in the photo to the right, which chooses polished glass as the predominant element of the set. All elements are suspended and include modules with polished Ice glass doors and shelves and backs lacquered in glossy Baltic Blue, designed to dress the wall of the living area. Infinite possibilities, therefore, to express style and creativity in a living composition. Both with and without the back panel, the watchword remains the same: create a harmonious blend of spaces, combining shapes, colours and materials.

FURNISHING YOUR DREAM HOUSE.

Everybody dreams to have a house that conveys his or her personality through the colours, furniture styles, accessories, compositions and combinations that furnish it. But for those who are not interior decorators, are there any guidelines to follow so as not to find yourself with a collection unrelated objects.

Choose your style.

It sounds strange, but the most difficult part is understanding exactly what style you are trying to create. Often the mental barrier that prevents you from clearly visualizing your desires is knowing all to well how limited your economic resources are. So the first thing you must do is ask yourself: if you had an unlimited budget, how would you like to spend it? What colours and what "look" would you like your house to have? Thus you can free yourself from all the involuntary filters that imprison your imagination.

Look around.

The second step is to look for examples. A style can take many different forms and for this reason you need to start thumbing through magazines specialized in home furnishing, interior decorating, etc. Take careful note of the details that strike you, like a curtain with a particular shape, some kind of rug, or a way of placing it, a design element for a piece of furniture, or collect photos and drawings that somehow inspire you. Interior designers even recommend starting a scrap book to put your ideas in as you come across them. Over time, your perfect house will become clearer and more defined, making it easier to start with the purchasing phase.

How to choose.

Even among the objects that reflect your taste in style you may find things that don't convince you completely. That's true for furniture, but also for decorations, table-ware, glasses, curtains and the like; it's important to bring into your house only that which you definitely like, even if it's not always the most beautiful object.

The main reference point should always be your scrap book, which will help you understand if you really want a heavy drape or a light weight curtain, coloured walls or a neutral background.In the end you will be surrounded only by things which reflect your personality deep down.

Don't be impatient.

Leaving some spaces empty for a while is always preferable to filling them with impulsively chosen objects which you then regret, if not immediately, at least when you finally do find the perfect object for that space.  Don't be in a hurry to decide, save your money for the thing that is really just what you had imagined.  Also because the things that are not "you" often quickly find their way to the garbage can.

Indoor blinds and curtains: installation and assembly types.

With the summer on its way, it becomes extremely important to 'shelter' the house from the sun with efficient blinds or curtains. And indoor blinds or curtains can also be an excellent furnishing item, decorating the ambiance and creating wonderful light effects in the different rooms.

Before buying, it is a good idea to find out just what is the best option for your house, from the fitting method to the different fabrics and colours available on the market. To understand whether you are better off with a ceiling mount, wall mount or alternatively fitting curtains straight onto windows, it is important to have a clear idea of available space. The first thing to do, before opting for any of the installation systems, is to measure and evaluate the space required as accurately as possible. If there is plenty of room to manoeuvre, track-mounted curtains may be a good choice: the fabrics – soft or panelled – run horizontally on metal tracks, opening and closing manually. Fabric Roman blinds on the other hand, hook up to a rod fastened to the wall or ceiling, pulling upwards with a specific operation involving cords and counterweights.

In this case too, we can use more rigid or more flexible fabrics, depending on whether we are looking to adapt the blinds to a classic or modern furnishing style. In pole systems, the rings to which the curtain is attached run on cylinders of various different materials (steel, wood, iron), fastened to the wall.  Best matched to classic and country furnishing styles. Roller blinds, on the other hand, are decidedly modern: the fabric rolls upwards with an electrically-controlled system or a cord. If windows are in a relatively small room, or if there is little space available (such as in the kitchen, for example), a small rod is fitted to the window, to which the curtain is then hooked.

“The idea behind the Tribe project stems from the combination of three different emotions: discovery, nature and the sign. The discovery of new perceptive capabilities paves the way for original and innovative features in the kitchen environment (for example, the specific household appliances) that unleash a string of emotions through colour, surfaces and shapes - the most captivating features of this project. Nature as a source of friendly, warm textured sensations. Wood combines with warm materials such as bronze and rust that underline their bond with nature and their ancestral relation to man. The sign as a human mark that defines matter with its presence to convey a strong, distinctive character. Tribe certainly communicates at an instinctive level, and I specifically designed the project for people who love novelty, appreciate genuine emotional, tactile and aesthetic aspects, who acknowledge the kitchen as the defining mark of their identity and the primary medium in performing the rites of hospitality. From the start of this project, we identified two main aims: the creation of new forms and layouts which would meet the needs of new kitchen lifestyles, and the creation of new finishes to satisfy the demands of contemporary users. There is no mistaking the statistics: the bathroom and kitchen are the two rooms in the house we are prepared to spend the most on, and where investments in furnishings and concepts are highest. They are two rooms whose nature has been radically transformed. The kitchen has become the centre of social life and the place where families meet and interact. The kitchen is herefore invading the living-room and incorporating many of its functions, while at the same time the person doing the cooking wants to take part in family interactions and a guest does not want to be cut off from the person who is preparing his dinner.

The broad opening-out of our stage-set kitchen aims to respond to these needs for involvement and socialisation, while still solving the problems of the almost inevitable untidiness, excess heat, humidity and smells created by almost all of us, except of course for the elusive “perfect cook“, when at work. When it came to finishes, on the other hand, we started from the idea that very probably wooden kitchens owe a great deal of their popularity to the richness and variety of textures and colours this natural material can provide. We thought it was a pity that this richness of surfaces should automatically be unavailable to those choosing a more high-tech finish such as lacquer or glass. So we worked on finishes which would provide these surfaces with the subtle reflection effects and almost imperceptible changes of texture found in wood. The lacquered or glass finishes in Scenery set out to respond to this demand for warmth and richness, by creating the high-tech boiserie. King & Miranda

"For this project we started from the desire to create an aesthetic with no horizons, playing with the elements on horizontal axes and discovering all the compositional possibilities. "Ductility, elegance and style are the objectives I set myself with this project. Ductility: this means proposing a contemporary atmosphere with a lightness of form and colours to those who love living with classic taste. The result therefore had to maintain some signs of tradition in the framed door and delicate appearance of the harmonious cherry wood grain. It means suggesting, to those who wish to savour living in a genuine, authentic, current space, the decisive, yet refined character of the oak finish that, when lacquered, exalts and defines the natural features of this noble material. Elegance: in a bid to offer a new sensory approach, I blended time-old materials like wood and stone with the more modern and technological stainless steel and glass, striving to grant the product details of light, a sensation of aesthetic lightness, elegant practical value. Style: the ‘kitchen area’ has, over time, recovered its central position as the heart of the family social life. The time spent preparing and consuming meals, although in a simple and informal manner, is still experienced as a ritual. This lifestyle inspired me to present compositions with distinctly modern modules, in my attempt to allow new concepts of practical function and warm atmospheres of elegant contemporary classicism stand side-by-side". DESIGNER KITCHEN. CRYSTAL by KARIM RASHID.

The discreet charm offered by bringing together glass and aluminium in Scavolini’s Crystal kitchen is also available in the Texture version by Karim Rashid with exclusive colour schemes and graphic patterns. "Decoration is a way of communicating, of conferring dimension, structure, form, depth and character; it’s a way of giving depth and dynamism to the objects that animate our space, that create favourable conditions, that drive the eye to go beyond the surface to arouse an illusion or entropy, to embellish or enrich the surfaces, materials and objects. Now decoration can add a further emotion and a new meaning to the flat and mono-chromatic world of modernism. With reference to this, I developed some digital graphic ideas to express the spirit of our times. This is what I did with Scavolini. I embellished the glass surfaces to transform two-dimensional kitchens into spaces endowed with more complex dimensions. A kitchen should be essential but also sensual just like everything else that goes on around it, but also well-ordered and evocative and appealing from an aesthetic and social point of view." DESIGNER KITCHEN. FLUX by GIUGIARO.

Our approach to this project has been to combine the need to design an innovative kitchen concept with the requirement of modularity that is typical of an industrial product. Thus we started by thinking of offering a curved dynamic shape for all the storage elements – wall and base units – which would be enhanced by contrasting with the technical elements – tall refrigerator and oven units – which are more austere and linear. This choice has led us to adopt a large, pull-out basket system for the bases and flap doors for wall units with the aim of offering more ergonomic opening systems for the doors. Having designed the initial layout of the modules, we worked in two different yet compatible directions, breaking down the new concept into a «hi-tech» version and a «wooden» version". HOW TO BLEND DIFFERENT STYLES IN THE KITCHEN.

The latest trend to flood the world of furnishing goes by the name of 'mix and match' or 'cross over' and talks about cross contaminations and blended styles.

The kitchen is an environment that consists of a great many different elements – doors, shelves, electrical appliances – often in different materials.  This characteristic can be exploited positively to create experimental matches that can also be in great contrast. If wood and tiles are a winning team, equally steel and wood can rise to this challenge.

In the example shown above, modern steel electrical appliances integrate perfectly in the wooden unit, creating a sort of modern-country effect. And the aesthetic result to the left is even more defined, where the lacquered door in a grey aluminium finish is exalted and enhanced by the contrasting boiserie background.

In the kitchen, and particularly for open-space environments, multipurpose furniture is much in demand.  We are talking about cupboards, elements that are now available in a huge range of different models.  These 'bridging elements' between the two environments are very useful for different reasons: they add storage space, can become a natural 'separé' between the two areas or, on the contrary, an important joining solution.

The photo to the top shows the pop style of the cupboard blending perfectly with the orange doors and the colours used in the living room, giving this room, in particular, a beautifully bubbly flair. In addition to the cupboards, shelves can also be transversal elements.  Take the photo to the left, for example, where they are used to fill or use otherwise 'problematic' spaces, or add personality to the overall look of the room.

In an ambiance where contrasts of materials and colours are often used, choosing the right details can help emphasise the style. When, as we were explaining previously, wood is set alongside modern steel, a unique effect can be obtained with a classic accessory such as a chandelier or lamp (coordinated with the wood and in contrast with the steel). In a super-decorated kitchen that recalls the aesthetics of the 1970s (like the model shown in the photo to the right), the result is one of perfect balance if blended with shades (in the walls and floors) that are far more minimal. But there is nothing to stop us taking absolute liberties with accessories recalling the trends of recent years, like small vintage electrical appliances.

The Kitchen According to the Senses.

Not just taste, but sight, smell, touch and hearing.  Did you know that a kitchen can positively stimulate all your senses?  Discover which elements will satisfy your senses and how to choose them to maximize your sensorial comfort.

The beauty of form, chrome and orderliness are factors that can positively stimulate your sight. So it is important to think of your space in a way that conforms to your personal tastes and visual equilibrium. If you are decorating your kitchen from scratch try choosing a color scheme (one or two base colors and some of their variants) to create harmony between the various elements. Otherwise 'harmonize' your color scheme by changing the colors of accessories and walls so that they better match the furniture.

Think of when you feel like relaxing after dinner, but you must turn on your noisy dishwasher, or you have just finished cooking for your guests but the hum of the ventilation hood disturbs your conversation.  For your kitchen to be a sanctuary of well being, you must not forget the importance of hearing. For audio-comfort choose minimally noisy appliances. How do do that? Just check the energy labels where the noise level is indicated in decibels.

A piece of furniture can be beautiful to see and also a pleasure to touch. A material's texture is as important as its color. All materials, from glass to wood, from stainless steel to ceramic can offer delicate and pleasurable sensations. It's up to you to discover the materials which suit you and can transmit a subtle tactile sensation.

If we think about smells in the kitchen, we immediately think of the smell of food.  When there are no cakes or cookies to perfume the space, you can use an essential oil.  The important thing is to not overdo the quantity and choose a fresh and light variety because if it's too strong it might overpower flavors and odors. Try adding a few drops of essential oils to the radiator diffusors: even if you just want to eliminate unpleasant odors, the best are orange, bergamot, grapefruit and lemon.

Two Elements of Spectacular Kitchen.

The 'cooking show' trend is where your kitchen becomes the set for a TV show with the cook as lead actor. The definition comes from those American TV programs where the presenter cooks before other people, capturing their attention.

At the center of the 'set' there is a bar/island capable of holding two distinct groups of people: the cook and the guests. The space is equipped with certain essential elements so that everyone will be comfortable. The preparation area includes everything that will help the job of the cook: cooking range, sink, a spacious counter top and many storage spaces to have all the accessories within easy reach.

The bar/island faces the living area from where the public can admire the cook at work.

In this type of kitchen storage elements function as a link between the living area and the kitchen. For an uninterrupted transition between these two areas you'll need to carefully select colors and materials.

An open space configuration is best for a 'cooking show' type kitchen. This large open space, without barriers between the two areas, will require a powerful ventilation hood capable of efficiently absorbing all odors. In the photo to the left, the Star ventilation hood (by Elica) covered with small glass prisms adds a striking final touch for a sparkling theatrical result.

New Kitchen Cupboards!

The latest kitchen cupboards offer a modern reinterpretation of the traditional storage cupboard and dresser. Storage and food preservation solutions that at the same time create continuity between the living room and working area in open plan designs or help style and complete the larger kitchen.

The cupboard in the photo to the right is in cherry wood with a dedicated space for the oven and a central glass door.  The domestic appliances are at a height that makes cooking easier and the central display space allows you to show off your key kitchen pieces, like a dinner service or a designer vase.

Another popular solution are reduced-height cabinets.  The combination of doors and suspended shelves in the photo to the right creates a dynamic storage solution, a continuation of the elegant style found in the kitchen for a multi-functional space that can accommodate the TV and other living room accessories, such as books, or kitchen items such as dishes and glasses.

Some tips how to clean the king of your kitchen - the hob!

How many times have you been unable to get rid of all the stains from the stove? And how many times was the top still dull and had ring stains even after cleaning?  To effectively clean a hob you need the right products and helpful advice. Here's how!

If you have a steel hob, the first thing to know is that you must not use any kind of abrasive, washing powder or steel wool. Remember to also avoid products that contain chlorine and to always dry surfaces thoroughly: if steel stays in contact with water for prolonged periods it can rust. We similarly advise against using products that contain chlorine (bleach or hydrochloric acid) because they may stain and rust the surface irreparably. To keep the surface in tip top condition, always clean after each use with a wet sponge and some soap and water or mild detergent. How? Wipe the surface in the direction of the satin finish and be sure to give it a good rinse afterwards. For particularly tough oil and grease stains, try using alcohol-based products or other solvents, like acetone. To avoid making the stain bigger, apply a few drops of the product directly onto the area to be treated (to loosen it) and then wipe with a clean and non-abrasive cloth.

If your top is ceramic glass you can also use detergents suitable used to clean windows. If it is tempered glass though it is better to use a sponge and water. In this case too it is best not to use abrasive detergents or sharp objects.  To remove dried-on stains use the special scraper (sold by good retailers) and never steel utensils or cutlery.  Stains from sugary foods, like jam, should be cleaned immediately to stop them hardening on the top. Enamel hobs can be cleaned with just a sponge and some washing-up liquid.

Cast iron grills can be cleaned with a non-abrasive sponge and soap or, if they are small, they can be put straight into the dishwasher. Vinegar also works well to loosen grease stains.  But steel grill pans should not go in the dishwasher because they should not be left wet for long periods. Simple soap is perfect.

Burners can be cleaned with a mild detergent or dedicated burner cleaning product.  The holes of the flame spreaders should be freed of crusts with a toothpick or left to soak in warm water.  You may want to add a special product for cleaning burners and flame spreaders in the water. After washing you must dry them thoroughly, because they must be completely dry to work.

If you want to design an open space kitchen...

Designing a modern or classic kitchen within an open-plan environment is a task which brings with it many hidden pitfalls. The greatest challenge of an open-plan environment is actually to create a large but not disorganised space, which is comfortable but not overcrowded with elements. Keeping the view unobstructed is fundamental to retaining a sense of airiness in the space, and is a concept which also applies to the kitchen area.

First of all, do not use furniture which is too tall or heavy (cabinets, shelving and folding screens); opt instead for “lighter solutions” such as rugs or low-level furniture. Next, choose light colours in order to create a glowing and bright room.

Another issue you need to consider is overall stylistic coherence, so that all areas interact with each other. If you want to be daring, you should be aware that classic and modern, minimalist and rustic can co-exist very effectively in the same room, provided that they are combined wisely and are not used exclusively in one area.  For example, if choosing a classic and contemporary style kitchen such as Regard, you can indulge yourself by placing both classic elements (such as other cupboards with framed doors) and modern accessories (a glass table, designer chairs, etc.) in other areas of the room.

Even if the room is large and airy, it is better not to opt for extra large units.  All units for open-plan environments, including those designed for the kitchen, must nevertheless be of a useful size, as well as being suitable for the area in which they will be installed. A defining feature of open-plan environments is the option of creating an ingenious “versatile” furnishing scheme capable of adapting to various functions.  Islands and peninsulas in this sense are the most suitable elements, as they are functional yet pleasant to look at.  From a kitchen point of view, an island and peninsula may be a work unit, holding everything you need within arm’s reach; on the other hand, it is a convenient option for storing books or for use as a snack bar/counter.
