Pride Month Reading

Title: Heaven Official’s Blessing/Tian Guan Ci Fu

Genre: Fantasy/Supernatural/Romance

Summary: After three ascensions to godhood in 800 years, Xie Lian is now the laughingstock of the heavens. He won’t let that get him down though. He’ll work as a scrap collector while doing his duties, mostly involving dealing with demons and monsters. But when a mysterious man in red named Hua Cheng appears, Xie Lian’s world gets turned around. Especially since he is a ghost king feared by the heavens, kind only to Xie Lian. As the pair uncover centuries of corruption tied to the heavens, Xie Lian can’t help but wonder if Hua Cheng has ties to his past as a prince.

Is it Explicit?: Not really. There’s some stuff hinted at towards the end, but that’s it.

Number of volumes available: 8 (hardcover and paperback)

Any adaptations?: Yes. Two (so far) animated seasons and a live action is in the works, but it’s unknown if that’s coming to fruition. There’s also a graphic novel with two volumes available so far.

My thoughts: This is my favorite series by this author. I have a whole Stephan style list of the crazy stuff from these books, but I can’t get into that right now. Xie Lian is The Character ever. Kind and polite after years of unimaginable suffering and hardships, with a snarky side that only peeks out rarely. Hua Cheng is the longing-est character I’ve ever seen. I love the side characters too! I will say there are some disguises being implemented, but I think it’s more fun if you know who’s who beforehand, but that’s just me!

By the way, even though there is no explicit smut in this one, there are elements of body horror, so do proceed with caution if it’s not your thing.
