“My problem,” he starts, his jaw working ever so slightly, “Is that this job sucks ass.” 

It would be different if he had chosen this job on his own. If he had applied to this position and wanted to work here. But he didn’t. His father did all of that for him and, there was no saying ‘no’ to dear old dad. But he wasen’t about to explain himself to some hard-up bitch now was he?

The pay was mediocre meaning he’d have to clock in several hours just to get something decent and the uniform was terrible, regardless of how he had modified it and flaunted it to ogling ladies. It was always cold and all the lights artificial and creepy. The music selection sucked, oh and let’s not get started on the customers.  This job was for losers and, that’s likely why it was chosen for him. A worthless job for a worthless son. It pissed him off just to be here.

Haughtily, he pulls out yet another cigarette and lights it right before her. “So what?”

      “ Take a chill pill, for Christ’s sake . ” Blue eyes rolled in their sockets . The drama . “ Do you honestly think anyone that works in this godforsaken place actually likes their job ? ”

      The fact of it was — the mall was the biggest source of jobs in Hawkins , and the place mostly likely to hire people with no significant job history . That;s what had drawn Robin to it . She’d needed a job fast , that was the long and short of it . Scoops Ahoy was not her dream job , but it would help her get by.

      “ Look , I just don’t want to get shut down by the Health Department when customers report us for putting cigarettes out in the goddamn ice cream . This job sucks , but I need the money . “

“ garbage films?  garbage films?! ”   how was he supposed to know if they were garbage or not?  he saw them all in the theater, either with dustin or robin, even if he doesn’t remember much of back to the future. 

“ look, maybe i’m not even a movie nerd like you and henderson and the rest of the shitheads, but i’m not that bad! ”   mostly, he’s just never made time to watch many movies at all.   “ i do know i don’t like those shitty scary movies, though. ”   he watches some on some dates and with some friends before…  everything.  but he hasn’t been able to get through another one. 

      “ yes , steve . you heard me . garbage . do i need to force you into a movie marathon so we can work on your taste ? ” 

      she’s rolling her eyes . “ the scary movie thing , i’ll give you a pass on . they’re not everyone’s bag . personally , nothing they can up with in a movie is scarier than the totally accidental fire at the mall .”  robin pauses , for just a moment ,  thinking . “ i’m just thinking — you’re not gonna be able to pick up any girls at work if you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about . “

nancy wasn’t  insecure  in  her  relationship  by  any  means,  sure  her  and  jonathan were  now  long  distance  but  that  didn’t  mean  they  weren’t  willing  to  work  through  it,  talking  about  the  future  seemed  a  bit  serious  at  times  but  she’s  glad  she  has  someone  where  she  can  see  the  future  with  them  at  least.  they  had  been  through  too  much,  share  the  same  scars,  it  was  a  bit  naive  to  call  him  her  soulmate  but  that’s  how  she  felt  sometimes.  but  now  with  him  gone  she  was  slowly  learning  to  branch  out  with  other  people  and  she’s  happy  that  she  can  talk  to  robin  like  this  and  not  feel  judged,  teasing  was  okay  because  nancy  did  it  to  from  time  to  time.   it  came  from  the  territory  of  having  a  friend  as  far  as  the  female  was  concerned.  “  it  does  to  me  too  but  i  found  if  you  just  live  one  day  at  a  time,  it  gets  easier… “  nancy  trails  off  and  shrugs  her  shoulders,  digging  into  the  strawberry  ice  cream  she  had  neglected  for  a  heart  to  heart,  spooning  it  into  her  mouth  and  grabbing  a  napkin  to  wipe  her  lips. “  enough  about  me  though,  what  about  you?  “  an  eyebrow  raises  curiously  at  her  friend’s  wellbeing  and  if  she  had  found  someone  yet.

      “ i mean , i guess we are getting old . talking about the future and stuff is like , normal . besides , you two have been together for awhile , right ? “ she leans back , closing her eyes for a moment as she thought it over herself . the concept was nebulous to robin — especially after the whole ... russians thing . it seemed impossible to move past  . nancy was right : one day at a time was the only way to do it .

      “ me ? nah . right now i’m focusing at my lucrative job at family video , and my long - term platonic lifemate situation with steve . “ she’s being sarcastic , of course , and robin was more than used to deflecting the topic of her romantic life when it came up in conversation . “ i mean , what sane person is going to believe me when i brag about how i cracked a secret soviet code , infilrated their base under our mall with steve ‘ the hair ‘ harrington and two children , and then fought of a fifty - foot tall demon with fireworks ?  and it’s too good of a story to waste . ”
