Donât Talk To Me Or My Son Ever Again

âIâm looking for a good fantasy recommendation,â I said.
âHave you read any Maggie Stiefvater?â the bookseller asked.
(I told her who I was and she began to cry, which was flattering)

Scotland Announces Plan to Make Period Products Free for All Students
Scotland is taking major steps in making pads and tampons more accessible and affordable for people with periods.
On Friday, August 24, the Scottish government announced their plan to provide students at schools, colleges, and universities with free period products, The Guardian reports.Â
The ÂŁ5.2 million plan makes Scotland the first country in the world to take such an action, which, in part, aims to ensure that lack of period products wonât interfere with studentsâ education.Â
Every year, hundreds of thousands of young people globally miss school due to limited or no access to period products; a 2017 survey by Always found that one in five students aged 16-24 in the U.S. who menstruate had left school early or missed school entirely at least once due to lack of access to period products.

School Starts Tomorrow
Me hanging onto summer:
God help me
âIâd been putting it off because I didnât have the money or time. Â But a program at the VA offered to help with tuition, so I enrolled in Empire State College. Â I wasnât there to play. Â I wasnât there to party. Â My only goal was to get an education. And more than the degree, I discovered that I needed the people. Â I met people at college that I could bounce ideas off. Â People who could challenge me to go further with my interests. Â Two of my mentors were Dr. Fullard and Professor Whiteside. Â Both of them had retired from corrections so they had a passion for helping black males. Â Theyâd tell me: I notice you have a strong ability for âsuch and such,â and Iâd love to see you develop it further. Â So thatâs what I did. Â Even though I majored in business, I found myself learning all about history and economics. Â Right now Iâm reading a book about the Haitian Revolution. Â It has nothing to do with my major, but itâs important to me. Â Itâs part of my personal curriculum. Â And thatâs the most important thing that I got from college. Â I got a degree. Â But more importantly I developed a personal curriculum that Iâll be using for the rest of my life.
I notice you have a strong ability for âsuch and such,â and Iâd love to see you develop it further.
Commit that phrasing to memory
This seems like something everyone should know if theyâre in the sciences and/or interested in reading scientific papers.
30 Books by Black Women to Read in 2018.
I mean, I get that the blog is called teacher misery, and I have felt trapped and miserable in my classroom on more days than I care to admit, but goddamn.
Seriously, that blog is just hateful. The title of their book including âspecial snowflakesâ is a clear warning sign.
âLook, kids are stupid before you teach them things.âÂ
âParents are ruuuuuuuude.â
âScrew doing any work in the summer!â
âThese students suckâ
âHaving kids is horrible, but mine will be better than everyone elseâsâ
âParent want thing?! WTF!â
Somewhere early in my teaching career, someone told me to avoid spending time in the staff/break room, because thatâs where everyone would spill out all their frustrations about everything, and it would just be a horrible feedback loop that made you angry all the time.
Teaching is hard. Anyone who says otherwise has either never been a teacher or is likely doing it wrong. There will be miserable days, days when you hate everyone on your staff, when you feel absolutely locked down by your admin or policies, and days where your students take every last drop of your energy leaving nothing for you to take home.
But none of that means that you should constantly seek out the bad, revel in frustration, or spew such vitriol about your students. If anything, stuff like this is a reminder to seek out positive influences. Who are the teachers and staff that gush about how hard the students worked? Who are the admin that try their damnedest to showcase the positive action in their school? Who are the parents that love what you do and try to support the school every day? THESE are the people you want to surround yourself with to keep up in this profession.
Let professional friendships with grossly negative people taper off. Minimize your time in toxic environments. Purposely seek the positive. To be clear, Iâm not saying âdonât feel like you have no right to be frustrated or upset.â I am saying that how you deal with those feelings will determine whether you spend the majority of your time feeling miserable or the majority of your time bringing positive change into the world.
All of thisÂ
